Drag Race star says we need to talk about killer 'chemsex' party epidemic

Daily Mirror07-05-2025

Drag queen Bimini Bon Boulash has spoken out about Britain's growing problem around 'chemsex parties' which have been linked to drug-related deaths and sexual assault
There's a dark shadow hanging over Britain's party scene. Concern has been raised after British drag queen Bimini Bon Boulash spoke out about their experiences with 'chemsex' parties, an underground phenomenon which sees people consuming illegal drugs to enhance sexual experiences.
In an interview with Paul Brunson on the podcast We Need To Talk, the Ru Paul's Drag Race UK star opened up about the growing trend in the LGBTQ community. They said: '[Chemsex] is a crisis. There's a problem more so than ever before.'

According to a report by the British HIV Association conducted in 2021, chemsex is a significant issue in several European countries, including Spain, Italy and Greece. The report found that Britain had the highest proportion of gay men engaging in chemsex, with more than 32% admitting to have participated in the activity.

Bimini continued: 'No one's going out as much, nightclubs are shutting down. People don't need to go out now to meet other people. They can just go on an app and hook up with someone. You can basically, if you wanted to, go to a party at any time of the day.'
'I've seen first hand the change in drugs being used in clubs… There's not enough harm reduction. There's not enough information. We need more spaces that are community driven,' they added.
Chemsex is also referred to as 'party and play' which is sometimes abbreviated to 'PnP'. While any drugs can be used in the act of 'chemsex', the three most popular are methamphetamine, mephedrone and GHB.
All of these drugs fall under legal restrictions in the UK, and all can have devastating consequences if misused. Ketamine use has also been linked with chemsex.
One of the most concerning parts of the crisis is that it's difficult to find data on it. Speaking to ITV News, a sexual health consultant Dr Naomi Fitzgerald revealed she has seen a rise in chemsex over the last decade. She said that a third of all drug related presentations at King's College Hospital were from GHB and crystal meth – two drugs closely linked with 'chemsex'.

Social psychologist Marc Svensson spoke to ITV about the rise in chemsex drugs: "You could refer to this as a kind of a silent crisis or epidemic...it's happening, we know that it's happening."
Worse still, the drugs have also been linked to fatalities. The same investigation conducted by ITV in 2023 found that three people die every month from chemsex in London alone.

Chemsex drugs like GHB also can also leave their users more vulnerable to sexual abuse. In 2019, Channel 4, Buzzfeed News and the Terrence Higgins Trust launched a major survey gay male GHB users. They found that almost half of users had overdosed and passed out from the drug. A further one in four said they knew of someone who had died as a result of using this drug.
There is a lack of education around these drugs and their potentially fatalconsequences. Most of the 2,700 survey respondents admitted that they were unaware that snoring while on GHB could be a dangerous warning that someone is slipping into a lethal coma.
Equally disturbing, the same survey found that the drug can also lead to sexual abuse. An overdose of GHB can lead to incoherency, convulsions and unconsciousness, making the user more vulnerable to assault. More than a quarter of respondents who used GHB reported being sexually assaulted while under the influence.
The dark trend has also been closely linked with HIV infections. According to a study conducted between 2013 to 2016, men who used chemsex drugs or who had sex without a condom with multiple partners were at increased risk of acquiring the potentially fatal virus.
Meanwhile, a survey conducted in Brazil found that chemsex has also been linked to the deadly monkeypox (or Mpox) virus. Researchers uncovered that the practice of chemsex was six times higher among those diagnosed with the virus than than those who had not contracted it.

Aristocrat killer who forced candle down victim's throat spotted on dating apps

Art gallery owner Bennet von Vertes brutally murdered 23-year-old British graduate Alex Morgan with a candlestick in a Swiss villa - but is now said to be popping up on dating apps An aristocrat who brutally murdered his victim by shoving a candlestick down his throat has been found searching for love on dating apps. Art gallery owner Bennet von Vertes killed Alex Morgan in a Swiss villa in 2014. He was later handed a 12 year jail sentence for the savage attack, which saw him beat the 23-year-old British graduate with a candelabra, stab him with glass and force a candle down his throat. Now Alex's mum Katja Faber says she has been sent pictures of her son's killer trying to find love after a string of women alerted her to his profiles on dating apps. ‌ ‌ Katja told the Standard: "It's quite extraordinary that someone on parole for such serious crimes can wander about the world as if he had done nothing." Alex was born in London but studied at Gordonstoun near Elgin, Scotland for several years, before meeting his killer at Regent's University London, then known as Regent's College. His mum had moved to Switzerland, and when he went to visit her in December 2014, he was invited by Von Vertes to his family's empty villa after a night out, reports the Daily Record. There, Alex suffered more than 50 injuries in the brutal and prolonged attack, and was pronounced dead the following morning. During his trial, Von Vertes claimed Alex was the aggressor - but he did not show any defensive injuries, suffering only one cut to his finger. ‌ He was found guilty of intentional homicide but the case was sent back to court in 2019 for appeal, where Von Vertes claimed he was so high on drugs he believed Alex was a green alien. The killer was temporarily transferred to an enclosed rehab facility, but after another appeal by Katja, he was again found guilty of intentional homicide. The Supreme Court denied Von Vertes's final appeal in 2023. He was also found guilty of raping a woman in a London hotel. ‌ But last year, Von Vertes was released on full parole - and Katja, who now lives on a farm in Spain and helps other families suffering grief, was recently sent images of Von Vertes on dating apps from two women. She was also contacted by a third woman. One image shows Von Vertes with an AirPod in his ear and the other is of him standing in front of a set of mailboxes. It came after one woman said unwittingly went on a date with Von Vertes while he was on day release from prison, describing him as "verbally abusive" and claiming he had boasted about serving time in prison for killing someone. She said he had used the pseudonym Benjamin Schwarz when she met him on the app.

Adalah, a legal rights group in Israel representing Thunberg and the other activists, said Thunberg, two other activists and a journalist had agreed to be deported and leave Israel. Other activists refused deportation, were being held in detention, and their case was set to be heard by Israeli authorities. Israel accused the group who were aboard the boat of supporting Hamas terrorists who detonated Middle East mayhem by massacring 1,200 and kidnapping 251 hostages. The activists said they were protesting the ongoing war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel says such ships violate its naval blockade of Gaza. More to follow... Good Morning Britain presenter shot and injured with rubber bullet reporting on LA protests

A Good Morning Britain presenter was shot and injured with rubber bullet while reporting on the violent protests in Los Angeles. US correspondent Noel Phillips was shot just 10 minutes before going live for the ITV breakfast show on Monday (9 June). The moment was caught on camera and shown to GMB viewers on Tuesday morning, as hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley expressed their concern for the journalist. Mr Phillips said: 'I was on the floor talking to several protesters and I felt an enormous ton of bricks had fallen on my arm, realised a rubber bullet had grazed the top layer of my skin.' He added: 'It gives you a sense of how unpredictable things are here.'
