I'm a family-owned American manufacturer. Being made in the US hasn't been easy but it's paying off.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with William Gagnon, executive vice president and COO of Excel Dryer, a hand-dryer manufacturer based in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Their main product is the XLERATOR Hand Dryer. This story has been edited for length and clarity.
We are a family-owned and operated company. I own it with my father, Dennis, who always wanted to own his own manufacturing company and make quality products that were American-made, dependable, and that people like to use. That was his criteria.
The apple didn't fall far from the tree. We've worked together over the years to make sure that it stayed that way.
It's certainly been difficult, with the easy route being to simply source overseas and get things cheap from China and keep costs down and make more margin. But that wasn't who we were.
We always tried to find a better way to do things — to be more efficient, reduce material and labor costs, and have quality employees making a living wage — and still be able to produce an American-made product that was high quality at an affordable price.
We are Made-in-USA certified, which requires a minimum of 84% of materials sourced domestically, but we have far surpassed that. We're really in the upper 90% of being sourced in the US, and almost 50% of our materials are sourced in Massachusetts from very local vendors.
For a while, we couldn't find a motor manufacturer domestically that could compete with motors from China in performance, price, size, and other things. But we have since found a domestic partner and shifted all of our motor manufacturing to be with a partner out of Tennessee.
It has not been easy, and it took a consistent, dedicated effort to always be looking and always be trying to find new vendors as close as possible.
Being made in America differentiates us from other hand dryers and certainly makes a difference to our customers and the buyers.
The recent tariffs have also been good for business. We've been able to control our supply lines and our materials and their costs because they're all domestic. With everyone living in uncertain times and not knowing really where the materials they were buying from people were coming from, we've known, and that has put us in a very competitive position.
One of our top distributors put out an e-blast saying that several of our top competitors were raising their prices, but our name was not on that list. We asked them to put out that same e-blast to say that XL Dryer is American-made and will not be having a price increase because we're tariff resilient and domestically sourced. We have absolutely gotten new customers as a result of this.
We are also a global company. We just put almost 600 hand dryers into the new Istanbul airport. But to get our American-made product into Turkey, there are substantial added costs, such as tariffs and value-added tax. It's a barrier to entry there and makes our product more expensive and less competitive. If those costs can come down through trade negotiations, it's going to open up more international markets for us.
Uncertainty is never good, especially for business, so that the sooner things can be negotiated and put into place, the better it's going to be for all involved.
We're a small manufacturer of a niche product, and everyone's story is different. But for us, in the way we've been doing business and doing it harder than most and making it a part of who we are — and being proud to be American-made in Massachusetts, which is where America was born — it is an exciting time for us.
Being American-made is just who we are. It is in our DNA. But I feel it's as if we almost were looking into the future a little bit to be ready for this moment, and it's maybe a positive for all the hard work over the years that we had to put in to keep it this way. It's nice for it to be paying off.

When ESPN and Major League Baseball opted to end their long-time media partnership in February, both parties appeared to be at an inflection point. MLB's national relevance felt like it was shrinking. ESPN was looking to cut costs on some of its larger properties. What a difference six months makes, though. On Tuesday, Yahoo Sports' Kendall Baker reported that MLB was close to finalizing the outstanding portions of its media rights agreement for the 2026-28 seasons. The highlights, via Baker: What It Means For MLB It's hard to fully evaluate these deals just yet, if only because we don't have the financial details. But it seems highly likely that NBCUniversal will pay MLB something near to what it was getting from ESPN ($550 million per year) and Apple ($85 million per) under the previous arrangements. Netflix's portion would also add to that total, as would ESPN, buying Overall, MLB is highly likely to make more money from this reworked deal compared to the existing ones. Even if not, though, the move is still a win for baseball. It trades limited streaming reach on Apple TV+ for potential broadcast reach on NBC (assuming it's not a Peacock-only window). And then swaps cable for broadcast's larger audiences on Sunday nights. The Home Run Derby also gets a potential upgrade that puts it in front of a younger audience on Netflix. Among MLB's previous gripes with ESPN was that it was 'not pleased with the minimal coverage that MLB received on ESPN platforms' (via a memo from commissioner Rob Manfred). Appearing on NBC would potentially solve those issues. NBC's Sports Resurgence NBC shuttered NBC Sports Network at the end of 2021 as it was losing NHL rights and consolidating programming and leveraging Peacock. Yet since then, it's made aggressive moves to expand its sports footprint on TV. Over the last few years, NBCU has acquired broadcast rights for the Big Ten Conference, NBA and WNBA, and now potentially MLB as well. The company now has so many tentpole sports properties that it is considering launching a cable sports network again (according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal). A foothold with MLB on Sunday nights would also give NBC dominion over that night of the week year-round. Sunday Night Football would hand off to Sunday Night Basketball, which would give way to Sunday Night Baseball. Given what NBC has already managed while turning SNF into the NFL's biggest weekly showcase, it's easy to be optimistic about it doing the same for the NBA and MLB, elevating those matchups as well. ESPN's Everything App Gets Even Bigger ESPN manages to have its cake and eat it here, shedding the pricey national TV deal with MLB while picking up what could be a lucrative out-of-market product in Leading up to the launch of ESPN's new standalone streaming app, the company has been busy making the offering unavoidable for sports fans. In recent months, ESPN has added WWE events to its roster and acquired NFL Media properties like NFL Network and NFL RedZone (while also giving up 10% of the company to the NFL). By tacking out-of-market MLB games onto the service much in the way it has already done with various niche and college sports rights plus the former out-of-market games, ESPN very much plans to win over fans with the sheer volume of content available within this streaming app. Even more notable: Acquiring these out-of-market games allows ESPN to completely circumvent the need for a national media rights deal with MLB. If there's an interesting matchup one night, it can simply utilize the app's interface to give it the premium treatment and direct audiences there. MLB rights, much like the NHL rights it already has, also give ESPN an even longer list of recognizable logos for viewers to see while scrolling through the app. In an environment where all consumer expenses are being scrutinized, the idea that you'll get most MLB and NHL games on top of main ESPN feeds – even if you don't need them all – is an appealing sales proposition. Regardless of the financials involved, though, all sides seem to score a big win here. Assuming the sport doesn't implode when the collective bargaining agreement expires at the end of 2026, of course.

After bankruptcy filing, Claire's says it has sold most of its North American business

After filing for bankruptcy for a second time and saying it could soon close more than 1,100 stores, Claire's announced on Aug. 20 that it would be selling most of its North American business to private equity firm Ames Watson. In a news release, Claire's said the sale was done to 'maximize the value of its business,' as well as to pause liquidation sales at most of its stores. In court filings earlier this month, Claire's CEO Chris Cramer stated that liquidation sales would continue until a buyer was found. Although a buyer was found, Claire's announced that liquidation sales will continue at select stores, but did not specify which locations would be impacted. 'As we continue through our restructuring proceedings, our team has worked tirelessly to explore every option for preserving the value of the Claire's business and brand,' CEO Chris Cramer said. The Illinois-based company, which operates 1,326 stores across the United States, has faced financial challenges due to the rise of fast-fashion brands like Shein and Temu, high rent costs, and new tariffs from supplier nations, including China, according to documents filed with the bankruptcy court. Claire's will seek approval of the sale on Aug. 21 at a court hearing in Wilmington, Delaware. Store closures amid hard times As part of its ongoing bankruptcy process, 18 Claire's-owned stores are set to close no later than Sept. 7 across the country.
