"Stay In Your Lane, India": Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal's Solution To 50% Trump Tariffs

NDTV2 days ago
New Delhi:
Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has hit back at US' sudden tariff hike on Indian imports, calling on India to rise as an "unapologetic superpower" in the face of global pressure.
"Every few years, the world reminds us of our place. A threat here, a tariff there. But the message is the same: stay in your lane, India," Mr Goyal wrote on X.
"Global powers will always bully us, unless we take our destiny in our own hands. And the only way to do that is if we collectively decide to become the world's largest most unapologetic superpower in the world. In economy, in technology, in defense, and most importantly, in ambition. There is absolutely no other way."

This came hours after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order late Wednesday, slapping an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, taking the total import duty to 50%. The White House cited India's continued purchases of Russian oil and military equipment as the reason behind the decision.
According to the order, the first 25% tariff took effect this morning, August 7. The second levy will be implemented after a 21-day period, on August 27.
Former NITI Aayog CEO and India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said, "Trump has provided us a once in a generation opportunity to take the next big leap on reforms. Crisis must be fully utilised."
The tariff hike is expected to drive up the cost of Indian goods in the US market across a wide range of sectors, making them significantly less competitive. Affected categories include-
Shrimps, organic chemicals, textiles, carpets, and apparel.
Gems and jewellery, steel, aluminium, and copper.
Machinery, mechanical appliances, furniture, and bedding.
Vehicles will be subjected to a 26% tariff, while petroleum products will face a 6.9% duty.

India's refurbished laptop market sees strong growth: Know the top-selling used models

NEW DELHI: The refurbished or second-hand laptop market in India is seeing a significant rise, driven by the demand for affordable technology and the convenience it offers consumers. A recent report by Cashify, an Indian e-commerce platform that deals in used and refurbished electronics, shows that the average resale value of a laptop in India is about Rs 14,499, while the average selling price (ASP) for a refurbished laptop stands at Rs 17,661. Windows-based laptops dominate the market, making up 64% of the resale supply and 63% of refurbished sales. However, Apple laptops also show strong demand, accounting for 36% of the supply and 37% of the sales, especially due to their premium quality and performance. 'For students, job-seekers, and creators, refurbished laptops offer affordable, reliable access to tech. While consumer adoption is starting to see a shift, we believe refurbished devices can also help startups and small businesses scale cost-effectively. It's not just about saving money; it's about building smarter, more sustainable systems. At Cashify, we're enabling this shift, making quality tech more accessible, without the cost to your wallet or the planet,' said Mandeep Manocha, co-founder and CEO of Cashify. Top 5 Refurbished Laptop Models in Demand Among the most in-demand refurbished models are the MacBook Air from 2017 and 2020, along with popular Windows-based laptops like the HP 15 Series and the HP Pavilion Series. The laptops that retain the highest resale value are typically high-end models such as the MacBook Pro 2023, MacBook Air M3 2024, and the Lenovo Yoga Slim 6i Series, indicating that premium devices tend to depreciate more slowly. Fastest-selling refurbished laptops include the MacBook Pro A1706 and the 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro, as well as business-grade Windows models like the Lenovo ThinkPad E480 and HP EliteBook 830 G6, showing a strong preference among users for both performance and reliability.

Trump takes jab at Biden, says his administration prevented Russia-Ukraine war from becoming a WWIII

Washington, Aug 9 (UNI) Taking a jab at his predecessor Joe Biden, US President Donald Trump said that the Russia-Ukraine war could have escalated into a third world war, were it for his administration. He further argued that global tensions peaked when relations between Moscow and Washington hit their lowest point during the Biden administration, reports RT. Since his return to office, Trump has resumed diplomatic ties with Moscow which had been virtually suspended in 2022 during the Biden administration, and has indeed made calls with both Putin and Zelensky to come to a settlement. However, while he shares good ties with the Russian President, his efforts have not yielded much success while his policies have been a lot more anti-Kremlin, weaponising trade in an attempt to get Moscow to stop its attack on Kyiv, targeting both Moscow as well as Russia affiliated nations. Speaking to journalists at the White House on Friday, Trump claimed that, if not for his administration's actions, the Ukraine conflict 'would have ended up being a world war." 'We've brought it down a long way, but when I first came in, I thought, 'Wow, this thing is really bad,'' Trump added. 'Now the only question is: when is it going to be settled? And it could be very soon,' he said. The president again termed the ongoing war 'Biden's war' and criticised what he described as the previous administration's vast military support for Kyiv. 'Through Biden and his people, we're probably in for $350 billion,' he said. Trump has claimed that he aims to recover this sum through a rare earth minerals deal with Ukraine, which he states could refill the US coffers. However, many analysts have called the move a folly, as majority of the minerals lie in areas such as Donetsk and Luhansk – both of which have become a part of Russia. While Washington has echoed Moscow's position on the conflict – terming it as a proxy war against Russia – the Trump administration has continued with its weapons exports to Ukraine, supplying the country with both Patriot missile batteries, as well as Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, artillery systems, and anti-tank munitions. Kremlin officials have stated that securing a peaceful resolution will be the central focus of the bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin. UNI XC ANV GNK

‘His only card': Zelensky says Vladimir Putin ‘trying to sell' Russia-Ukraine ceasefire for a 'price'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday blasted Russian President Vladimir Putin for trying to 'legalise the occupation' of Kyiv's territories as the attempts to reach a peace deal gather pace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky blasted his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, saying that he wants territorial gains and the legalisation of occupation. (AFP) Zelensky said that the end of the war depends on Russia, and it must end the war it started. 'First and foremost, there must be a just end to the war, and it depends on Russia. It is Russia that must end the war it started,' he said in his address to the Ukrainian people. Zelensky said that Ukraine and its allies have the same understanding of the need for a ceasefire and for the end of the killings. 'Only one actor stands against this, Putin. His only card is the ability to kill, and he is trying to sell the cessation of killings at the highest possible price,' the leader of Ukraine added. Volodymyr Zelensky said that the requirement wasn't a pause, but a real, lasting peace. He called for an immediate ceasefire and said that US President Donald Trump also told him the same thing. 'I have not heard any partners express doubts about America's ability to ensure that the war ends. The President of the United States has the levers and the determination. Ukraine has supported all of President Trump's proposals, starting back in February. Ceasefire, all formats have been supported,' he added. The Ukrainian President blasted his Russian counterpart, saying that he wants territorial gains and the legalisation of occupation. He said that his country won't allow for its second partition, after losing Crimea.
