Cut SST to 4% and postpone new tax to January, says Chinese chamber

The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia said rising costs, which have been felt in 2025, are expected to persist next year.
KUALA LUMPUR : A business chamber has urged the government to cut the sales and service tax to 4%, provide higher thresholds and expanded exemptions, and postpone implementation of the expanded tax to January to allow businesses more time to prepare.
The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia said in a statement that adequate preparation was crucial to ensure better compliance and smooth implementation, Bernama reported.
The chamber called for:
a lower tax rate of 4% in the first two years (2026–2027) to ease the burden on businesses and consumers;
a higher registration threshold, from RM2 million to RM3 million, for service tax on leasing, rental and construction services;
a higher tax exemption threshold, of RM2 million in annual sales instead of RM1 million announced on Thursday, for small and medium-sized enterprises.
'We also propose a longer exemption period of 36 months for non-reviewable and reviewable contracts, to cover all project types due to the nature of the projects and their cycles,' the chamber said.
The expanded SST applies to additional services (wellness centres, financial, and healthcare) and three new services (rental or leasing, construction works, and education), and is due to begin on July 1.
The chamber said in a statement that it 'cautiously welcomed' the government's review of the expanded SST announced on Thursday.
However, the chamber said there were concerns over multiple cost increases coinciding with a challenging global and domestic economic environment, exacerbated by the uncertainty surrounding US trade tariff policies and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
'The effects of rising costs, which have been felt in 2025, are expected to persist or influence the business and economic landscape in 2026,' it added.

Two Sabah reps, businessman to face graft charges tomorrow over mining licence scandal

KOTA KINABALU, June 29 — Two state assemblymen and a businessman arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) under Ops Adun, are reportedly scheduled to be charged tomorrow. New Straits Times wrote that the Sabah MACC said the trio are expected to be charged at the Special Corruption Court here at about 9am. They will face a total of four charges under the MACC Act 2009. Two of the charges will be brought under Section 16(b)(A) of the Act for offering bribes, while the other two will be under Section 16(a)(A) for accepting bribes. So far, 15 politicians have been implicated in corrupt activities between 2023 and 2024, in exchange for assistance in processing mineral exploration licence applications. MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki told reporters that the individuals were in the process of being arrested and notified about their court dates.

PBDS eyes comeback at next Sarawak state poll, mulls possible Opposition pact

SIBU, June 29 — Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) is preparing to contest in the next state election by targeting constituencies deemed suitable, based on grassroots support and the aspirations of its members. PBDS president Mejar (Rtd) Moses Ripai said the party is in the process of identifying potential candidates who meet its internal criteria and are capable of serving the people effectively. He said this during the PBDS Ngiling Bidai gathering held at his residence in Taman Permai here last night, which was attended by over 100 members and their families. Among the senior leaders present were deputy president Julius Enchana, secretary Kipli Ayom, Selangau PBDS chief Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun, Kanowit chief Datuk Paduka Michael Lias, Saratok chief Dato Linang Chapum, PBDS Orang Ulu representative Dr Elli Luhat and PBDS Bidayuh representative Dr Bayang Teron. 'We have always remained committed to serving the people, even if our efforts are not always publicised. What we do on the ground does not need to be exaggerated, let our actions speak quietly but meaningfully,' said Moses in his address. He called on members to continue fostering unity and mutual understanding within the party, as these values are crucial to strengthening PBDS as it moves forward politically. Touching on potential collaborations, Moses said PBDS remains open to working with opposition parties, provided such cooperation is built on mutual respect and aligned with the party's core values. 'We welcome cooperation with any like-minded parties, as long as there is sincerity and respect for our principles,' he said. The event, held in conjunction with the PBDS 'Ngiling Bidai' Program, featured traditional elements such as the miring ceremony, Ngajat dance and the symbolic cutting of the 'ranyai' tree. The strong turnout by the party's top leaders was seen as a signal of PBDS' intention to revitalise its grassroots network and consolidate its position ahead of the next electoral contest. — The Borneo Post
