Eldorado Park girl, 4, dies after alleged rape and assault by father

The Star7 days ago
A four-year-old girl from Eldorado Park has died from injuries sustained in a brutal assault, allegedly at the hands of her father.
The father, who was initially charged with attempted murder, now faces a murder charge, while the girl's mother has also been arrested for allegedly defeating the ends of justice. The death has sent shockwaves through the community.
The child was still on life support on yesterday when her father appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court on charges of attempted murder, rape of a minor, and child abuse.
She died later that evening and the father is now facing a murder and an additional rape charge, Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed. He is set to return to court on August 12 for a formal bail application.
"Police can confirm that the four-year-old child has died in hospital. The case docket has been changed to murder and an additional charge of rape has been added," he said.
This incident is drawing a painful comparison to the Jayden-Lee Meek case, raising urgent questions about a pattern of violence and the protection of children in the community.
The 11-year-old Jayden-Lee's mother, Tiffany Meek, has been charged with his murder.
The two cases, unfolding in separate Joburg neighbourhoods, have reignited national anger and raised urgent questions about accountability - not only in policing, but in the homes and streets where these children were left unprotected.
According to police, the man was arrested after officers responded to reports of screams coming from a backyard shack.
Inside, they discovered the young girl with severe head injuries, bruises, and a swollen eye. It has been revealed that she is now fighting for her life at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
Ward 18 Councillor Juwairiya Kaldine, who rushed to the scene after receiving a call from a concerned resident, described the disturbing images in conversation with the Saturday Star .
'When I arrived, it was a gruesome scene, a bath filled with bloody clothes and paper towels soaked in blood,' Kaldine recalled.
'I immediately instructed that the property be secured and went straight to Eldorado Park police station to report it.'
Kaldine spoke visited the hospital, where she saw the little girl on life support.
'When I got to the hospital, I had the privilege of seeing our little fighter lying in trauma, fighting for her life on life support. And I am saying that we don't have a community that is angry enough with what has transpired. We have a community that is keeping the government of today accountable. We do not have a community that says enough with Eldorado Park police station incompetence; they lay down in our communities. They should be enforcing the law, but instead they are enforcing incompetence, and they show it daily. The general was in Eldorado Park for Operation Shanela, and we made grounds, and we said, 'We are willing to work with Eldorado SAPS; we are willing to work with any member of the law enforcement and ensure that the lawlessness in Eldorado stops.' And we are able to work and combat crime together, and here we are. I am saying today that I never thought this would happen in my community. I never thought that we would wake up and have to go to a crime scene of a 4-year-old little girl,' she said.
Anti-drug activist and Member of Parliament Dereleen James said the tragedy reflects deeper, ongoing failures.
'This keeps happening every week, the same trauma, the same statements, the same outrage on social media, and then nothing changes,' said James.
'We have to stop being afraid to confront those who harm our children. Too many people saw and heard what was happening, but fear kept them quiet. Now a child is fighting for her life.'
She further stressed that it is not only law enforcement that is failing, but also communities and families themselves.
Masondo confirmed that officers responded on Wednesday, 6 August, to a complaint of a father assaulting his child.
'Upon entering the shack, they found a man with a little girl and a little boy. The girl had visible head injuries and bruises. The man who introduced himself as the father of the children could not give a clear explanation of what happened to the girl. The police arrested the father and rushed the girl to a nearby medical care centre for treatment. The father was later charged with attempted murder and child abuse. Further information by the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit led to the arrest of the mother of the victim, who was charged with defeating the ends of justice,' Masondo said.

Police on the hunt for hijackers

Gauteng police are hot on the heels of suspects who abandoned a BMW X5 in Kaalfontein and fled the scene on foot into the Themba Khoza informal settlement. The suspects, the number of which is not yet known, were allegedly involved in an attempted truck hijacking in Sandton on August 8. Read more: Police arrest suspect in connection with hijacking a courier van in Sandton Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad received a report to look out for a black BMW X5, which was later spotted in Midrand, where a high-speed chase began, all the way to Kaalfontein, about 8.8km away. 'The suspects abandoned the car and fled on foot into the informal settlement. Inside the vehicle, police found two firearms, with a magazine loaded with ammunition, blue lights, and SAPS reflector jackets. The search for the suspects is currently underway.' Two police helicopters were deployed to assist in the search, with shots fired, but no casualties were reported. Masondo said their preliminary investigation revealed that the X5 was hijacked in Germiston last month, while one of the two recovered firearms was stolen in Ivory Park. Masondo said they believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate behind multiple truck hijackings. 'Their modus operandi involves posing as police officers, pulling trucks over, hijacking them, and making off with the goods.' This is an ongoing investigation and more information will be provided as it becomes available. NPA separates cases of couple charged after Eldorado Park girl's death

The case against the parents of a four-year-old girl from Eldorado Park in Soweto, who is the victim of abuse, has been postponed until Monday. Both the father and mother will remain in custody while the state prepares to oppose bail. The four-year-old girl, who is not named to protect the identity of her three-year-old brother, passed away on Friday at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. She was in ICU since August 6 after she was assaulted and nearly drowned, allegedly by her father. Provincial SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo previously confirmed to Soweto Urban News that the initial case docket of attempted murder was changed to murder after her death. According to Soweto Urban News, the father and mother each made a brief, separate appearance at the Protea Magistrate's Court yesterday. The father of the four-year-old is facing five counts: Murder, rape, compelled rape, child abuse, and assault of a minor. The mother, who is reportedly pregnant, is facing a charge of failing to immediately report a sexual offence committed against a minor. The presiding magistrate postponed the matter to allow for a formal bail application. NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane explained to the media outside the court that while both accused were arrested, the NPA decided to separate the two cases. This was due to a lack of evidence that the alleged offences were committed jointly. Cases separated 'Now that we know alleged offences are not intertwined, we then had to separate the two matters for the mother to appear alone as well as the father,' said Mjonondwane. 'With the case against the father, he is now facing five charges, we have added three additional charges to the two that he was facing in his first appearance. While the mother on the second docket is facing the charge of failing to immediately report a sexual offence against a minor.' She added that according to the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act 32 of 2007, one has a duty to report such a crime. Mjonondwane stated that the state will be opposing bail, and reasons will be advanced in court. Calls for justice Bandile Masuku, the chairperson of the portfolio committee, said that committee members were there to pay their respects to the family and community of Eldorado Park. 'This is one of the many [cases] we continually get reported on in the country and it is important that every time we get such cases as a community and legislature we rally behind the fight against women and children abuse,' said Masuku. Eldorado Park ward councillor Juwairiya Kaldine told the media that she believes the country's justice system is failing women and children and that the case should be handled by a female magistrate. 'The government of today sitting in legislature need to relook at the constitution of this country because the constitution we are currently guided by [does] not stand [up] for women and children in this country,' said Kaldine. Three Operation Dudula women in court over ID demands at Soweto clinic

Simon Majadibodu | Published 5 hours ago Three women from Operation Dudula are expected to appear in the Orlando Magistrate's Court on Monday after allegedly entering a Soweto clinic and demanding that patients produce their identity documents to prove their nationality. The incident took place on Thursday at the Lilian Ngoyi Clinic in Diepkloof, Soweto. The women, aged between 49 and 60, reportedly entered the maternity ward and disrupted services by questioning patients and demanding to see their identity documents. Police were called to the scene after the suspects were locked inside one of the labour wards, where both staff and patients felt their rights had been violated. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the women were arrested and charged with contravention of the National Health Act and public violence, among other offences. Operation Dudula, an anti-migrant group, launched a nationwide campaign in June aimed at preventing undocumented foreign nationals from accessing healthcare services at public facilities. The group has been blocking foreign nationals from receiving treatment across Gauteng, claiming public healthcare should be reserved for South African citizens only. They argue the country's healthcare system is overburdened and cannot support undocumented immigrants. The group's actions have drawn sharp criticism from government officials and human rights organisations, while some community members have expressed support. In a separate incident in Booysens, two suspects were arrested after allegedly assaulting a man at a local clinic. 'It is alleged that on Monday, August 4, the victim was queuing for treatment when a woman approached him and demanded to see his ID or passport,' said Masondo. 'When he could not produce the documents, she called two accomplices who then assaulted the man and forced him to leave the facility.' The victim later reported the incident to the Booysens Police Station. Two suspects were arrested and charged with contravention of the National Health Act and common assault.
