Taiwan president's Americas trip shelved over Beijing's objections
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has reportedly shelved his planned August trip to diplomatic allies in the Americas amid reports that the Trump administration blocked a New York stopover after Beijing raised objections.
State of play: Lai was expected to travel to Belize, Guatemala and Paraguay — Taiwan's remaining diplomatic allies in the region — with U.S. stopovers planned for New York and Dallas. But on Monday, his office cited recovery from recent typhoon damage and ongoing U.S. tariff discussions as reasons he has 'no plans to travel overseas in the near future.' Embassy officials in Guatemala and Paraguay later confirmed the visit was postponed indefinitely. Meanwhile, sources reportedly told the Financial Times that the U.S. blocked Lai's New York visit after Beijing objected to Washington.
Trade talk timing: The move comes amid Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's trade talks with Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng in Stockholm as the Trump administration sets its eyes on a possible summit with President Xi Jinping. Bessent, however, denied any link between the travel matter and trade negotiations, saying, 'We are very careful to keep trade and national security separate.' Meanwhile, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce dismissed the reports, saying the situation is 'hypothetical' and that 'there have been no plans — travel plans for the president.'
The big picture: The reported decision has drawn bipartisan criticism, with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warning that it sends 'a dangerous signal' showing the U.S. 'can be bullied by Beijing into silence on Taiwan.' House Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi called it 'another example of the Trump administration caving to China in hopes of reaching a trade deal.' Paraguay, for its part, also faces domestic pressure, with ruling party congressman Hugo Meza saying the country is 'wasting time' maintaining ties with Taiwan.

The tensions follow Lai's declaration in June that 'Taiwan is of course an independent country," prompting China's Taiwan Affairs Office to denounce his statements as 'heresy,' 'hostile' and 'separatist.'

Texas lawmaker asks FBI to help arrest fleeing Democrats
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) on Tuesday asked the FBI to help state law enforcement locate and arrest Democratic lawmakers who fled the state. Why it matters: The request escalates the standoff as Texas Republicans try to compel Democrats back to the Capitol to advance a plan to draw an election map more favorable to the GOP. "This is a time-sensitive matter," Cornyn wrote in a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel. The FBI declined to comment. State of play: Also on Tuesday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) said he would pursue a court ruling to declare the Democrats' seats vacant starting on Friday. "The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines. If you don't show up to work, you get fired," Paxton said in a statement. Catch up quick: Several Texas Democrats fled the state to delay votes on a redistricting map that will give Republicans five more congressional seats, something President Trump has demanded. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday ordered state police to find and arrest Democratic lawmakers after the state House issued civil arrest warrants. The Democrats are in Illinois, Massachusetts and New York. Watch live: Trump signs executive order on Olympics 2028 task force
President Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Tuesday afternoon to establish a task force ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games. The games will be held in Los Angeles, the first Olympics to be hosted in the U.S. since the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Trump earlier this year signed another order to bar transgender athletes from competing in girls' and women's sports, fulfilling one of his campaign promises. Those individuals will also face exclusion from the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. 'The President considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term,' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. 'Sports is one of President Trump's greatest passions, and his athletic expertise, combined with his unmatched hospitality experience will make these Olympic events the most exciting and memorable in history.'
