Draft regulations on renewable energy: traders, prosumers protest in front of State Electricity Regulatory Commission office

The Hindu03-07-2025
Organisations representing traders and solar prosumers in the State's renewable energy (RE) sector staged a protest in front of the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) office here on Thursday calling the commission's draft regulations on renewable energy impractical and damaging for the sector.
The protest was organised by the Ministry Approved Solar Traders (MASTERS) with support from organisations such as the Kerala Renewable Energy Entrepreneurs and Promoters Association and Renewable Energy Companies Consortium.
Traders in the sector also observed a 'Solar Bandh' on Thursday by keeping firms involved in the manufacture, sale, installation and service of the RE components shut as part of the protest.
'Denying fair hearing'
Interestingly, the protest came just days ahead of the hearings planned by the commission from July 8 to July 11 on the Draft KSERC (Renewable Energy and Related Matters), 2025. The protesters alleged that the commission is also denying the public a fair hearing by confining its hearings to online mode.
The protesters wanted the commission to hold physical hearings in all the Assembly constituencies, ensure the support of the national-level solar policy for schemes such as PM Surya Ghar and retain the existing conditions for Net Metering System (NMS).
If the draft policy is implemented in its present condition, the number of people opting for rooftop solar systems would fall drastically, according to MASTERS. It would also adversely impact the livelihood of lakhs of people engaged in the manufacture, sales, installation and service of the RE components, the organisation alleged.
Conveyed apprehensions
A delegation from the protesting organisations also met the commission chairperson T.K. Jose and conveyed their apprehensions.
Meanwhile, the commission has said that the online hearings would be held in three sessions on each of the four days. More than 500 people would be heard in each of the sessions. The hearings were planned online to ensure higher public participation, according to the commission.
The registration for the hearings is open till 5 p.m. on Friday.

'Just Have To Wait...', Says PL CEO Richard Masters As Independent Body Handles Man City Charges

Last Updated: The Premier League issued 115 against City in February 2023 over alleged breaches of its financial rules, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters revealed that his angsty wait for a verdict over the series of finacial charges mounted against Manchester City wouldn't amount to much as the case and investigating are at the hands of an independent hearing. The Premier League issued 115 against City in February 2023 over alleged breaches of its financial rules, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation. The case was heard by a commission between September and December last year, but no decision has been published. The issue continues to loom over the league as the 2025/26 season begins this weekend. Masters stated that his organisation has no control over when a verdict will be reached. 'Once the allegations and the charge have been put forward, they go before an independent panel, which is independently selected. They are then in charge of the process and its timings," Masters told Sky Sports News. 'They hear the case, they decide the outcome, and we have no influence over that or its timing. 'And that's right; from an independence point of view, it is essential that independent people make those decisions, and we just have to wait. 'My frustration is irrelevant, really. I mean, I just have to wait, and legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated, but we have to be patient." City deny any wrongdoing and assert they have a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence to clear their name. However, if they are found guilty, they could face a range of punishments, including a severe points penalty or even expulsion from the Premier League. City were charged with failing to report accurate financial information for nine seasons spanning from 2009/10 to 2017/18, as well as failing to provide full details of former manager Roberto Mancini's pay between 2009/10 and 2012/13. They are also charged with failing to provide full details of remuneration in contracts with players between 2010/11 and 2015/16, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation over a period from 2018 to 2023. Since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008, City's fortunes have been transformed on the field from also-rans to the dominant force in English football. Eight of their ten top-flight league titles have been won since 2012, and they also won the Champions League for the first time in 2023. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
