The mass premium SUV segment just got energised with two new latest entrants- The Skoda Kodiaq and the Volkswagen Tiguan R Line. While both the SUVs are essentially the same under the skin, customers looking for a mass premium SUV can also look at the BYD Sealion 7 which was launched in India in March 2025.
While the Skoda Kodiaq is only available with a petrol engine, the Sealion 7 is a battery electric vehicle. Both the SUVs come with a strong set of features set along with refined performance. The Skoda Kodiaq is assembled in India, and is available in the Sportline variant for ₹ 46.89 lakh, and the more premium Laurin & Klement (L&K) variant for ₹ 48.69 lakh. All the prices are ex-showroom. BYD Sealion 7 on the other hand is priced between ₹ 48.90 lakh and ₹ 54.90 lakh (ex-showroom), for the Premium and Performance variant respectively.

Under the hood, the Skoda Kodiaq features a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine making 201 bhp and delivering 320 Nm of torque. The engine gets paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and gets fitted with all-wheel-drive.
BYD Sealion 7 gets an 82.5 kWh battery pack. The Premium model is equipped with an FWD setup, while the Performance trim features an AWD setup. The Premium model develops 308 bhp of peak power and 380 Nm of max torque. It can accelerate 0-100 kmph in 6.7 seconds, while it offers up to 567-kilometre range on a full charge. The Performance variant gets the same battery pack but churns out 522 bhp peak power and 690 Nm of maximum torque. It can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 4.5 seconds and go up to 542 kilometres on a full charge. Skoda Kodaiq vs Volkswagen Tiguan R Line: Features
The Skoda Kodiaq highlights comfort and thoughtful functionality in the cabin. It has a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital driver's display, a head-up display, and one of my favourite features, Skoda's clever Smart Dials, with rotary knobs merged with digital screens making climate and media functions easy to control. The Kodiaq has wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a premium 14-speaker Canton sound system, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and wireless phone charging to add to its overall opulent feel. The Sealion 7 is loaded with features, and both trims share the same set of features. The all-black interior features a flat-bottom four-spoke steering wheel, a 15.6-inch rotatable screen that handles most functions and a 10.25-inch digital cluster. Standout features include a crystal gear selector and a driver monitoring system that utilises infrared technology to identify drowsiness or distraction. The Nappa leather front seats are power-adjustable (8-way for driver with lumbar, 6-way for passenger) and ventilated. Other features include a head-up display, a 12-speaker audio system, a dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof.

Skoda India sees no immediate impact of rare earth magnet supply crisis on its production
Skoda Auto India claims that it is not facing any disruption owing to the rare earth magnet supply chain crisis. The premium car manufacturer that currently sells models such as Kylaq, Kushaq, Slavia and Kodiaq in the Indian passenger vehicle market has claimed that it has enough stock of the crucial component. Speaking to the media, Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Skoda Auto India, has said that the auto company is facing no production disruption at present owing to the rare earth magnet crisis, and it has enough stock. Disruption and the way ahead His comment comes at a time when several stakeholders of the Indian auto industry are suspecting a major headwind for vehicle production, especially for the models and variants that come equipped with high-end technology-aided features. Also, majorly impacted will be the electric vehicles, for which the rare earth magnets come as a highly important component. Interestingly, Skoda currently sells no electric vehicles. However, the rare earth magnets are key components for manufacturing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as well. Over the last few weeks, automakers such as TVS Motor Company, Bajaj Auto, as well as the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) have expressed their anxiety over the ongoing crisis, which started as China that controls over 90 per cent of the global rare earth magnet production has put a curb on the rare earth material exports earlier this year. The industry stakeholders believe the Indian auto industry is likely to see a major production disruption in July or August this year, if the crisis continues. Skoda Enyaq RS Race unveiled. Is this the future of Skoda's EVs?

Building upon the foundations of the first concept shown in 2024, the evolved Skoda Enyaq RS Race is sharper, lighter, and more purpose-built than ever, designed to demonstrate Skoda's technological prowess and eco-conscious ambitions. The Skoda Enyaq RS Race is not just a concept car. It's a rolling laboratory for innovations in electric racing, material sustainability, and performance engineering. It offers a clear signal that future production EVs from the Czech brand may very well be shaped by the lessons learned on the racetrack. Skoda Enyaq RS Race: Specifications Based on the Skoda Enyaq Coupe RS, the RS Race concept has undergone extensive reengineering to suit motorsport use. The latest version is 70 mm lower, 72 mm wider at the front, and 116 mm wider at the rear than its road-going counterpart. Key to its performance upgrade is a massive 316 kg weight reduction, achieved through the use of sustainable materials and the removal of all non-essential components. Skoda engineers have recalibrated the chassis, introduced a completely new high-performance braking system, and added components from the Fabia RS Rally2, like the pedal setup and rally-type hydraulic handbrake. The concept features a linear steering system with rally-specific software tuning, replacing the standard progressive rack-and-pinion setup. Here's what the sportier e-SUVs get Skoda Enyaq RS Race: Design A significant part of the RS Race's innovation lies in its material science. The concept uses sustainable biocomposites made with flax fibres developed by Bcomp, a motorsport technology partner, as an alternative to carbon fibre. These are employed across 16 body and interior parts, including bumpers, roof, fenders, dashboard, door panels and more. The flax-based PowerRibs reinforcement structure delivers carbon-like rigidity while cutting CO2 emissions by 85 per cent. Lightweight polycarbonate windows, recycled 3D-printed nylon, and biopolymer filaments further reduce mass and environmental impact. This makes the Enyaq RS Race not just a performance car but a showcase of Skoda's path toward sustainable racing and future production car materials. Skoda Enyaq RS Race: Aerodynamics and motorsport technology Skoda has equipped the RS Race with a comprehensive aerodynamic package, including a large rear wing, NACA air intake, roof winglets, redesigned air intakes, and a new rear diffuser. These elements enhance downforce and cooling while minimising drag and turbulence. The car features carbon-ceramic brakes with ten-piston callipers at the front and four-piston callipers at the rear, paired with a new brake cooling system. Underneath, protective skids shield vital chassis and battery components. Suspension duties are handled by a motorsport-grade setup with fully adjustable compression, rebound, and spring stiffness. It is now available in dealerships near you Skoda Enyaq RS Race: Powertrain and performance The Enyaq RS Race retains the dual-motor electric powertrain from the standard Enyaq Coupe RS, offering a combined output of 340 bhp. Despite keeping the 180 kmph top speed, the dramatic weight drop enables it to sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in under five seconds, a noticeable improvement over the road car. Skoda Enyaq RS Race: Interior Inside, the cabin is reimagined for motorsport with racing seats, a roll cage, and a minimalist dash. It draws inspiration from the Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, incorporating a racing steering wheel, new control switches, and a revised infotainment system. A bespoke drive selector and fire suppression system controls sit between the seats. The experience is further elevated by a specially developed Havas sound system, equipped with a digital amplifier and large speaker units that simulate an emotional racing soundtrack, activated above 30 kmph for a more immersive drive.
