‘Splitsville' Review: The ‘Climb' Sensations Covino & Marvin Are Back In Riotous Comedy Of Marital Woes With Dakota Johnson And Adria Arjona
In 2019 The Climb made a splash in Cannes like few independently made comedies ever could do as it won a prize in the Un Certain Regard section, drew major critical praise, got instant distribution from Sony Classics and put its creators and stars Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin on the map as filmmakers to watch. Six years later, they finally are back on the Croisette for tonight's Out of Competition premiere of a new comedy all about marriage in crisis, Splitsville, and I am happy to report they are firing on all cylinders with this truly hilarious look at two couples who are best friends but find their marriages suddenly are blowing up.
In fact, I would say it is this film that will firmly establish them as true comedy heavyweights, whereas The Climb had several LOL moments but ran out of steam toward the end. Splitsville stays on course for all 100 minutes, and it has some pretty outrageous stuff along the way.

RELATED:
As it starts we meet Carey (Marvin) and his bride of 15 months, Ashley (Adria Arjona), happily singing off-key as they drive along a country road on their way to see best friends Paul (Covino) and his wife Julie (Dakota Johnson). Then Ashley offers a, uh, sexual favor to Paul right there in the driver's seat. Unfortunately tragedy occurs when their antics cause another weaving car to roll off the road, with the driver's wife thrown from the passenger seat.
Horrified they jump out of their car, pull the dazed man out and try to revive the woman to no avail. Not exactly a setup for laughs, but to show where this movie might be going, a female cop turns up and asks Carey why his penis is out of his pants flopping in the wind. Whoops. This is just the beginning, and for a shell-shocked Ashley also the end as she chooses this moment to tell Carey she wants out of their short-lived marriage, and she's serious. He freaks out and, close to Paul and Julie's house, runs away through the field, eventually showing up in their backyard and explaining to his friends about the sudden breakup.
RELATED:
In pure Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice fashion, it isn't long before they are consoling him by saying the secret to their union is to have an 'open' marriage, advice these two free spirits offer freely, even climbing in the shower — fully clothed — while Carey washes up. Soon their marriage is on the rocks when, in an alone moment, Carey and Julie hook up. The trouble really starts when Carey, actually believing Paul might be fine with it, admits he had sex with his wife. Paul is not fine with it, and a brawl you have to see to believe commences between the two bros. This fight is one for the ages, beautifully choreographed and an instant classic.
Covino, as he did on The Climb, again takes the director's chair for the script he co-wrote with Marvin, and he isn't afraid to also throw everything at the wall, again. This time, most of it sticks, with both couples trying out various partners to diminishing results. I had concerns this would all careen out of control and go way too far over the top, but they are able to keep it grounded due to a very smart and witty screenplay that also finds time to offer real truths about what makes a marriage work.
Covino and Marvin are superb comic actors, not afraid to go for it when they want to but also keeping it real and relatable. They are aided greatly by Johnson and Arjona, who make you believe that deep down they are in love with these guys, but not ready to put up with craziness for the rest of their lives. In Johnson's case, she is a mother to son Russ (Simon Webster, a terrific kid actor), who she and her husband need to put first amidst all this madness.
You could compare this style of adult film comedy favorably to likes of movies like the aforementioned Paul Mazursky classic, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and other gems of the grown-up '70s era of Hollywood studio comedies. Covino, though, points out his inspirations are more toward Charlie Chaplin and his idol, Jim Carrey. I don't think he and Marvin should underestimate the sophistication of what they have pulled off with Splitsville. In a business that downplays comedy where good ones are increasingly rare birds, this is an example of how to do it right.
The supporting cast also is first-rate, if not given a lot of screen time, with romantic interests for Julie including Nicholas Braun as a mentalist hired for Russ' birthday party and a naked, guitar-playing Don Juan named Jackson (Charlie Gillespie).
Producers are Covino, Marvin, Johnson, Ro Donnelly, Ryan Heller and Samantha Racanelli.

Billy Joel shares first message with fans since brain disorder diagnosis
Billy Joel is taking his recent brain disorder diagnosis in his stride, according to the director of Billy Joel: And So It Goes. The legendary singer-songwriter, 76, who last month announced he had been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), was notably absent from Wednesday's screening of the new documentary at Tribeca Film Festival. But that didn't stop him from relaying a message to the crowd through the movie's co-director, Susan Lacy. 'We know Billy wishes he were here tonight, and he asked us to convey that to you all. In fact, he said, 'Getting old sucks, but it's preferable to getting cremated,'' Lacy told the audience, per Deadline, assuring them that 'he will be back.' Tribeca Film Festival co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal additionally addressed the auditorium, with the latter saying: 'Billy wanted to be with us tonight, but as you may have heard, he's dealing with a health issue and had to postpone his performances, including this one tonight. We know you will join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.' 'He's our piano man, a wonderful, integral part of the heartbeat of our city,' De Niro added. 'Tonight, we get to see the man behind the music and behind the legend. You're in for a real treat.' Directed by Lacy and Jessica Levin, Billy Joel: And So It Goes charts the meteoric rise of the five-time Grammy-winner from his humble Long Island beginnings to international stardom. Pulling back the curtain on Joel's private world, it includes unreleased performances, intimate home movies, and never-before-seen behind-the-scenes moments. Billy Joel: And So It Goes will debut on HBO and be available to stream on Max in July. The documentary's world premiere comes weeks after Joel canceled all of his upcoming concerts and tour dates due to his NPH diagnosis. NPH is a condition caused by excess cerebrospinal fluid building up in the brain's ventricles, which leads to increased pressure that compresses brain tissue and can lead to neurological symptoms. The NHS describes it as an uncommon and poorly understood condition that typically affects people over the age of 60. Patients are often diagnosed after they see a doctor because they or a family member are concerned they might be developing dementia, as the symptoms – from memory loss, bladder control issues and trouble walking – can be similar. A statement shared to his official Instagram at the time read: 'This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance. 'Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health,' it continued. 'He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.'

Trump Vs Musk Gets BBC ‘Have I Got News For You' Treatment After Meltdown Occurs During Recording
EXCLUSIVE: It was the bust-up that was long predicted, but spectacular nonetheless. Donald Trump and Elon Musk's steady separation suddenly went thermonuclear on Thursday, with the former MAGA mates exchanging Molotovs across two social media platforms. Deadline hears that the fireworks broke out as Hat Trick Productions was recording the final episode in the current season of BBC comedy series Have I Got News For You. Cameras were about to be shut down for the night when producers decided to throw the Trump-Musk meltdown at presenter Richard Ayoade and teams led by Ian Hislop and Paul Merton. We hear that Trump vs Musk will feature towards the end of the show, with Merton and Hislop offering their typically withering commentary on events in the U.S. Their teammates on the night were comedian Jack Dee and Kelly Cates, one of the new presenters of Premier League highlights show Match of the Day. Have I Got News For You will air at 9PM on BBC1 on Friday. The timing was somewhat auspicious given that the show is about to bow out for its 69th season. HIGNFY first launched in the UK in 1990 and continues to attract around 3M viewers, often making it BBC1's most-watched show of the day. Hat Trick Productions, run by Jimmy Mulville, has recently established Have I Got News for You on CNN in America. Filming has concluded on Season 2, and CNN has renewed the comedy show for a third run, which will begin screening in September. Hosted by Roy Wood Jr., along with team captains Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black, the show was ultimately greenlit by Mark Thompson, who is entwined in the history of Have I Got News for You, having served as the BBC's director general. Mulville would have loved for the Musk-Trump imbroglio to play out while the CNN series was in production, but for now, he will have to make do with the story gatecrashing the UK show. Brianne Howey's Georgia Faces A Life Sentence And Murder Trial In ‘Ginny & Georgia' Season 3 Trailer
Netflix has released the full trailer for Season 3 of one of its biggest young adult hits, Ginny & Georgia, Season 3 of which could be headed down a dark path. The show returns to Netflix June 5 with 10 episodes. Season 2 ended on quite a few chaotic notes, including Georgia (Brianne Howey) getting arrested at her fairytale wedding to Mayor Paul Randolph (Scott Porter). More from Deadline 'Ginny & Georgia' Season 3: Everything We Know So Far 'Ginny & Georgia' Season 3 Casts Ty Doran & Noah Lamanna Mike 'The Miz' Mizanin Set As Host Of 'American Gladiators' Reboot On Amazon's Prime Video 'You know what I loved about your wedding?' Jennifer Robertson's Ellen Baker tells Georgia in the kitchen of the Baker household. 'It wasn't this cookie cutter copy and paste affair, it was very memorable.' 'Especially the part where I was arrested,' Georgia adds. To be clear, Georgia did commit the murder of Tom Fuller, husband of Cynthia Fuller (Sabrina Grdevich), whom she smothered in Season 2 while he was already ailing and in hospice. And her son Austin (Diesel La Torraca) witnessed her do it while he was playing a game of hide and seek with Cynthia's son Zach. He remained hidden in the closet while Tom's monitor flatlined. Austin's father Gil (Aaron Ashmore) also came to town last season, adding another wrinkle to the already layered life of Georgia Miller. 'My mom's awaiting your murder trial, and everyone at school is looking at me like I'm in the circus,' Ginny (Antonia Gentry) tells her best friend Maxine Baker (Sara Waisglass). 'It's fine.' 'College essay writes itself,' Max jokes. She later expresses deep concern for Ginny to the other two members of their friend group, MANG, Nora (Chelsea Clark) and Abby (Katie Douglas). Until her trial, Georgia will be under house arrest with an ankle monitor, which starts beeping when it needs to be charged. There seems to be tension between Paul and Georgia, though he can be spotted running with Ginny. RELATED: 'I've always known my mom was different,' Ginny's voice plays over scenes of her walking through a parking lot and being judged by her fellow students. 'There's more to her that people don't see.' 'Everyone thinks I'm a violent, unhinged monster,' Howey's voice plays over a scene of her having what looks like a panic attack. 'You can't give up,' Raymond Ablack's Joe, owner of Blue Farm, tells Georgia. 'At least it can't get any worse, right? Except if I go to prison, that would be worse,' she says with Joe next to him. 'I'm not a bad person, but if you come face to face with bad, you become a little bad yourself.' 'Mom needs me,' Ginny tells her father Zion (Nathan Mitchell). 'You think you have the whole story, but you don't.' Paul doesn't want any more secrets between him and Georgia. 'I've been defending my mom to everyone. I'm trying so hard to protect her, but I don't even know if it's the right thing to do,' Ginny says to a solemn looking Marcus (Felix Mallard), who had his own mental health struggles at the end of last season. 'I don't want my mom to go to prison.' Ellen Baker reaches out to comfort Ginny. 'You think she did this?' Paul asks Zion. The clip ends with Georgia chipperly declaring that she and Ginny are 'ride or die,' which they have been since the show's first season. RELATED: Created by Sarah Lampert, Season 3 of Ginny & Georgia gained a new showrunner in Sarah Glinski after Debra Fisher helmed the first two seasons. Executive producers include Jeff Tahler, Jenny Daly, Holly Hines and Daniel March for Dynamic Television as well as Armand Leo, Lance Samuels and Daniel Iron for Blue Ice Pictures. Co-Executive Producers are Elena Blekhter and Ali Kinney. April Mullen directed the first two episodes, with Jasmin Mozaffari directing 3 and 4, Liz Allen directing 5 and 6, Sharon Lewis directing 7 and 8 and Darnell Martin directing 9 and 10. Writers are David Monahan, Danielle Hoover, Michelle Askew, Ayotunde Ifaturoti, Ali Kinney, Eboni Freeman, Jordan Dumbroff, Zachary Arthur, Kourtney Richard.
