Surf Abu Dhabi Pro Begins Middle East's inaugural World Surf League Championship Tour event

Web Release16-02-2025

Surf Abu Dhabi Pro, the inaugural World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour event in the Middle East, got underway on Friday in the UAE capital to begin an incredible weekend of elite surfing.
Surf Abu Dhabi Pro is being held from February 14-16 at Surf Abu Dhabi on Hudayriyat Island featuring the world's top surfers in both the men and women's categories.
The men's heats on Friday saw Connor O'Leary, Jackson Bunch, Jack Robinson, Griffin Colapinto, Italo Ferreira, Yago Dora, Jordy Smith, Rio Waida, Filipe Toledo, Kanoa Igarashi and Liam O'Brien qualify automatically for the Round of 16 on Saturday. Miguel Pupo, Joel Vaughan, Deivid Silva and Mateus Herdy joined them after successfully coming through Friday's night-time elimination session involving 24 surfers.
Brazilian surfer Miguel Pupo said: 'It feels great to qualify. All my practice runs were at night, so I was used to the environment – the conditions and the light – and took advantage of that. I felt at home. It gives me a lot of confidence for tomorrow. It makes you happy and gives you a lot of joy when you make your waves.'
He added: 'I hope the fans come and enjoy the surfing. Having this environment to watch so close and see those airs at just 15 meters away, it's pretty nice. I hope the fans enjoy it. It's nice having the pressure too – usually in the ocean you train a lot and don't have that opportunity. Here you're going to have your waves and it's just a matter of whether you're going to make them or not. I think the stadium vibe is really good.'
Surf Abu Dhabi – which was created in collaboration with Kelly Slater, widely regarded as the greatest surfer of all time – features state-of-the-art wave technology, powered by Kelly Slater's WaveCo. The innovative man-made system holds multiple Guinness World Records, including the longest and largest artificial wave pool.
Everyone taking part on the incredible waves in Abu Dhabi this weekend is competing for a shot at the World Title at the season-ending WSL Finals. The women's heats take place on Saturday at Surf Abu Dhabi Pro with the men in Round of 16 and quarter-final action.

Mokaev faces Assis as 971FC gears up for blockbuster fight card

971FC, the UAE's fastest-growing fight promotion, takes the Coca-Cola Arena by storm on Saturday, for a landmark night of international combat sports and entertainment. With 14 explosive bouts, elite fighters in the main and co-main events, and a headline live performance by hip-hop legend Lloyd Banks, this is more than a fight night – it's a cultural event. This event is officially sold out, marking it as one of the most anticipated sporting spectacles of the year. The spotlight shines bright as Muhammad Mokaev faces off against Thomas Assis in the main event, a thrilling bantamweight bout set to headline an action-packed fight night. In a major shakeup, undefeated British-Dagestani phenom Mokaev (14-0) faces off against Brazilian submission expert with an 11-fight win streak Assis (12-2). A former IMMAF world champion and UFC veteran, Mokaev is known for his relentless pressure and Olympic-level wrestling. Assis, who hails from Coari in Brazil and trains out of RCT Coari, is riding a win streak and brings a gritty, aggressive grappling style that promises a chess match on the ground. Russian powerhouse and sambo technician Raimond Magomedaliev (10-2) returns to action, looking to impose his dominant top game against seasoned Brazilian striker Andrey 'Mineiro' Augusto (17-9-1) in the co-main event. Augusto is known for his durability and knockout power and will look to test the Russian's chin and composure under fire.

Keys leads American charge into quarter-finals at Queen's Club; Khachanov sails in Den Bosch

Second seed Madison Keys powered into the quarter-finals of the Queen's Club Championships with a 6-3 6-2 win over Anastasia Zakharova on Wednesday while fellow Americans Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova also progressed. Australian Open champion Keys had an early wobble in the opening set in her first grasscourt match of the season when she found herself 3-1 down as she tried to find her footing. But she did not panic and quickly recovered to win the next five games, sealing the set with an ace straight down the middle. Zakharova had her moments in the second set but could not contend with the power of Keys, who converted five break points and clinched victory with an unreturned serve to wrap up the contest in 68 minutes. 'Always tough to play your first match on the grass, especially against someone who's already played a few matches. But overall, pretty happy and happy that I get another match here,' Keys said. 'The first couple of games felt like I was just trying to find my footing. Once I did, I feel like I played really well.' Third seed Navarro overcame a nightmare opening set and also saved match point to beat Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia 1-6 7-6(4) 6-3. After Navarro saved a match point in the second set, Haddad Maia led 4-2 in the tiebreak but the Brazilian lost her momentum when play was paused so an audience member could receive medical treatment. Haddad Maia then began making errors and Navarro pounced, forcing a decider where the Brazilian lost serve with a double fault before Navarro clinched victory in a match that lasted nearly three hours. 'It wasn't easy. I think I've spent the most time on a match court with Bea than anyone else. We play each other all the time and we always go to three sets,' Navarro said. 'I've only been playing on grass for about four days, it's a quick turnaround.' Navarro set up a quarter-final clash with Anisimova, who needed only 64 minutes to beat Sonay Kartal 6-1 6-3, the second Briton she had beaten at the tournament after Jodie Burrage. 'I'm so sorry, guys,' she told the home fans. 'There's been some tough matches here but I am enjoying it and glad to be through to the next round. 'There are so many strong girls right now in America and I am so happy to see us doing well. I am sure the match with Emma will be a battle. She is a tough player and I am looking forward to it.' Any home hopes of British success in the doubles also went up in smoke when Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter lost 6-2 7-5 to top seeds Erin Routliffe and Lyudmyla Kichenok. Khachanov, Hurkacz advance: Poland's Hubert Hurkacz and Russia's Karen Khachanov made winning starts to their Libema Open campaigns in Den Bosch, Netherlands on Wednesday, while top seed Liudmila Samsonova suffered a shock loss to Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine. In her first appearance in a WTA Tour main draw, world number 231 Branstine sealed a breakthrough 6-4 5-7 6-1 win over defending champion Samsonova. Their match had been halted on Tuesday due to darkness at one set apiece, but Branstine returned to dominate the decider, not facing a single break point while converting two of her four break opportunities. Branstine, who was born in California and represented the United States until 2017, will next face fellow qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania. Fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz overcame a back issue, requiring two medical timeouts, to defeat Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(2) 6-4 and book his spot in the second round. The 28-year-old Pole will next take on 22-year-old Estonian Mark Lajal, who beat Serbia's Laslo Djere 6-2 6-4. 'It's my first time here and I'm really loving it,' said Hurkacz. Reuters

Neymar tests positive for COVID-19, football club Santos say

Brazil forward Neymar has been sidelined after testing positive for COVID-19, his club Santos said in a statement as quoted by Brazilian media. The 33-year-old began showing symptoms on Thursday and was immediately removed from team activities. Medical tests later confirmed the viral infection, the Brazil Serie A side said on Saturday. The club did not disclose how long Neymar will be out of action and did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Neymar is already ruled out of Thursday's league match at Fortaleza through suspension. The Fortaleza match will be Santos' last outing before the Brazilian league pauses for the June 14-July 13 Club World Cup in the United States. The former Barcelona forward's future at Santos remains undecided, with his contract set to expire on June 30. Limited by injury, he has made 12 appearances for Santos across all competitions this season, contributing three goals and three assists. Reuters
