Mercedes-Benz India's first-quarter sales hit record high on strong demand for top-end models, EVs

German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz said its first-quarter sales in India hit an all-time high, rising 10% to 4,238 units, on strong demand for its high-end models and electric vehicles (EVs).
Demand for luxury models in India, the world's third-largest car market, has steadily risen over the last few years as rapid economic growth brought about a fundamental shift in attitude towards luxury purchases among its younger generation.
Luxury car sales account for a little over 1% of India's 4 million units-a-year market.
'Our sharp focus on bolstering the top-end luxury (segment) has been highly successful in influencing customer preferences,' Mercedes-Benz India CEO Santosh Iyer said.
Mercedes says no supply chain disruptions after China export concerns
Sales of top-end models, like the S-Class and the Mercedes-Maybach portfolio, rose 20% between April and June, while EV sales jumped than two-fold to form 8% of Mercedes-Benz India's overall sales.
Mercedes' core segment, which includes the C- and E-Class sedans and the GLC and GLE sports utility vehicles, grew 10% in the quarter. These cars account for 60% of the company's total sales in India.
Mercedes leads sales of luxury vehicles in India, followed by BMW and Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). It produces and assembles a handful of models, including some EVs, from its Chakan factory in the western state of Maharashtra.

Wall Street swings to losses as earnings weigh

NEW YORK: The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq slipped from record highs on Tuesday as a series of downbeat earnings weighed on the indexes, while investors looked ahead to the US Federal Reserve's policy meeting later in the day. At 11:36 a.m. ET, the S&P 500 lost 14.45 points, or 0.23%, to 6,374.98, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 58.64 points, or 0.28%, to 21,119.59. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 198.93 points, or 0.44%, to 44,638.52, about 460 points short of its record peak. Quarterly results from key Dow components UnitedHealth and Boeing failed to impress investors. Health insurer UnitedHealth fell 5.1% after a disappointing profit forecast, while Boeing lost 3.7% despite reporting a smaller second-quarter loss. UnitedHealth's stock has lost nearly half its value from the beginning of 2025. On the day, the healthcare index lost 0.4%. Meanwhile, United Parcel Service became the latest victim of US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs as the stock tumbled 9.3% after the company reported lower-than-expected second-quarter profit. Similarly, Whirlpool sank 10.8% after the home appliances maker slashed its annual earnings forecast and dividend, citing tariff-centric pressures. The Dow Jones Transport Average dropped 2.1% to a one-week low. Meanwhile, consumer confidence in July increased more than expected to 97.2. In June, US job openings and hiring had decreased, pointing to a further slowdown in labor market activity. The week had started on firm footing after the US-EU trade deal that halved tariffs to 15% and boosted expectations of more agreements ahead of Trump's August 1 deadline. Trump has also floated a potential 'world tariff' of 15% to 20% for non-negotiating countries. Key negotiations between the US and China entered their second day in Stockholm as the world's two leading economies aim to resolve their trade conflict and possibly produce a 90-day extension to the tariff truce brokered in May. Meanwhile, India prepared for higher US tariffs — potentially as high as 25% — on some exports as it opts to hold the line on new trade concessions ahead of Washington's deadline, according to two Indian government sources. The International Monetary Fund was examining the details of the trade agreements the United States has struck in recent days to assess their economic impact. Earnings from tech heavyweights Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Apple are scheduled later this week and could potentially steer Wall Street in the following days. 'For the Mag 7 names, it's going to be all about that CapEx spend - that AI spend continuing to be pretty robust... the market's going to take a lot of direction from that,' said Jack Janasiewicz, lead portfolio strategist at Natixis Investment Managers. The US central bank is set to begin its two-day policy meeting later in the day. While the Fed is expected to leave rates unchanged on Wednesday, traders will closely analyze policymakers' remarks to gauge the timing of future moves. According to the CME FedWatch tool, markets are pricing in about a 61.6% chance of a rate cut in September. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.08-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 2.09-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 posted 31 new 52-week highs and nine new lows, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 67 new highs and 56 new lows.

Dollar hits one-month high versus euro

NEW YORK: The dollar hit a one-month high versus the euro on Tuesday in the wake of a string of trade agreements between the United States and its major trade partners, even as markets await interest decisions from the Federal Reserve. US President Donald Trump struck his biggest trade deal yet with the European Union on Sunday, which imposes a 15% import tariff on most EU goods and includes $600 billion of EU investments into the United States. That deal tops a $550 billion deal signed with Japan last week that includes a 15% reciprocal tariff. Investors are also eyeing ongoing trade discussions between the United States and China. Top US and Chinese economic officials met in Stockholm on Monday for more than five hours in a bid to resolve long-standing economic disputes at the center of a trade war. The euro was down 0.44% against the dollar at $1.1538, hitting its lowest level since June 23. The single currency had dropped 1.29% in the previous session, its steepest one-day decline since mid-May. The euro is poised to record its first monthly loss against the dollar this year. 'After falling sharply in the first half of the year, the dollar began July with a bounce and I think it's mostly short covering, and the issue is whether this is a trend change or an overdue technical correction,' said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex in New York. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, rose 0.37% to 98.98, rising to its highest level since June 23. The index is set to record its first month of gains this year. 'The market had a sigh of relief that the tariffs, at the least the plan announced with Japan and the EU and the likely 90-day extension with China, helped remove downside tail risk,' Chandler said. Several EU leaders have criticized the trade agreement reached with the United States. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said his economy would suffer significant damage due to the agreed tariffs. France's prime minister on Monday called the agreement a 'dark day' for Europe. Markets anticipate that the Fed will leave interest rates unchanged at the end of its monetary policy meeting on Wednesday. US Treasuries slipped on the session, with the yield on benchmark US 10-year notes fell 6.2 basis points to 4.358%. 'Ahead of (Wednesday's) Fed decision, we might get some consolidation. People are concerned about a possible dissent from at least one of the governors, maybe it's (Christopher) Waller or (Michelle) Bowman,' Chandler added. The Bank of Japan also is likely to hold off raising interest rates on Thursday after the Japanese trade agreement with the United States last week. The dollar was down 0.03% to 148.48 against the Japanese yen. Against the Swiss franc, the dollar strengthened 0.47% to 0.807 francs.
