Collaboration features big Pokémon's stars and lesser-known species too.
Uniqlo has announced that they've got a new line of Pokémon T-shirts on the way, and while the casual clothing chain and multimedia entertainment franchise have teamed up a few times before, there's something unique about this collaboration. That's because while previous designs have taken their inspiration from how the Pocket Monsters look in the franchise's anime and video games, this new Uniqlo line will be the first one ever based on the art of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Starting things off is Pikachu, who, as you can probably guess, has been the subject of a whole lot of Pokémon cards created by different illustrators. The shirt can be considered a greatest-hits compilation, with several dozen cards arranged in the shape of the Pokémon franchise mascot himself.
The rest of the line narrows things down to a single image per species, each coming from a specific card, such as the Mega Symphonia Mega Gardevoir ex-version of Gardevoir.
▼ Hmm…would this shirt fit on that life-size Gardevoir plushie?
High-profile fan favorites Slowpoke and Magikarp also show up, the former based on the Fossil-expansion artwork…
…and the latter on the Paldea Evolved card.
▼ Because if you're only ever going to do one thing, you'd better be expert-level at doing it.
It's not all ultra-famous faces, though, as the new line features a shirt for Omanyte, depicting the Rock/Water-type as it appears in the 151 expansion.
▼ The white text makes it a little hard to read, but the shirt even includes a helpful explanation of how to create an Omanyte using the Helix Fossil.
Joining the five T-shirts are four Pokémon Trading Card Game sweatshirts. The SVP Black Star Promo Snorlax one is great for those looking to match the cozy garment with a Pokémon that's as skilled at relaxing as Magikarp is at splashing.
▼ Snorlax is even doing the Lazy Press.
The next one is a bit of a trivia challenge, at least when viewed from the front, which informs you that its star 'Evolves from No. 0093…'
…meaning that it's Gengar.
This version of Gengar, the Genetic Apex Gengar ex, actually hails from Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, a.k.a. Pokémon Pocket, the digital version of the Pokémon Trading Card Game which launched last fall. That's also the case for the the Genetic Apex Mewtwo ex-card sweatshirt.
And finally, we come to another Pokémon who, like Omanyte, doesn't always get much time in the spotlight: Unown, in Silver Tempest VSTAR form.
As a cool little hat tip/deck tap to card gamers, the designs all feature little Pokémon cards near the hem.
The T-shirts are priced at 1,500 yen (US$10.35) and the sweatshirts at 2,990 yen, both offered in adult men's cuts. They're scheduled to go on sale in mid-August and will be available through the Uniqlo online store here.

One Piece Lego sets both are and aren't the first-ever Lego anime collaboration【Photos】

Five kits take their inspiration from One Piece, but not from the anime or manga. Lego has done collaborations with plenty of popular franchises, and the building block toys are popular in Japan. Oddly enough, though, there's never been an official anime Lego set, and that hasn't technically changed even though Lego has just revealed a collaboration with One Piece. But wait, hasn't One Piece been one of the most phenomenally popular anime/manga franchises for the past three decades? Yes it has, but these sets are specifically meant to be Lego recreations of the live-action Netflix One Piece, basing their designs off the appearances of the characters and sets seen in the streaming series. Of course, with the Netflix One Piece taking its visual cues from the anime/manga, these sets are sure to appeal to fans of the source material too. The lineup has five sets, including, of course, the Going Merry Pirate Ship, a 1,376-piece kit for builders aged 10 and up. ▼ The interior is full of details too, like Sanji's kitchen. The biggest and most elaborate kit, though, is the Baratie Floating Restaurant. With 3,402 pieces that come together to form an eatery 54 centimeters (21.5 inches) wide and 35 centimeters tall, this is a kit you'll want to set aside plenty of both time and space for. In addition, it's part of Lego's Sets for Adults category, implying an extra degree of complexity that might frustrate little kids, but should delight grown-up kids-at-heart. The most action-packed kit is the Battle at Arlong Park (926 pieces, ages 9 and up) That's because in addition to being bundled with a figure of Luffy throwing a Gum-Gum Pistol punch… …the tower is designed with a feature that lets it burst apart as Luffy smashes through it! Rounding out the line are two modestly sized sets, the 573-piece Buggy the Clown's Circus Tent and 299-piece Windmill Village, both recommended for builders 8 and up. Preorders are open now through the Lego online stores for the U.S. and Japan here and here, respectively, with the Going Merry listed at US$139.99/20,480 yen, the Baratie US$329.99/42,980 yen, the Battle at Arlong Park US$79.99/12,480 yen, Buggy's Circus Tent US$54.99/7,680 yen, and Windmill Village US$29.99/4,680 yen. Shipping and the in-store sales start are scheduled for August 1. Unfortunately, since the kits are based on the first season of the Netflix One Piece, none of the kits contain a Chopper figure, but if you want to know how he'll look in the live-action show, we've got a sneak peek right here. No more using real katana for tourism activities, Japan's National Police Agency says

By Casey Baseel, SoraNews24 The town of Maruyama, in Yamagata Prefecture, bills itself as the birthplace of iaido. A martial art that focuses on drawing a sword from its scabbard and striking in one smooth, swift motion, iaido is said to have been developed by the 16th century swordsman Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu, who hailed from the area and is enshrined at the town's Kumano Iaii Shrine. Seeking a way to share this aspect of its culture with visitors, in 2017 the Murayama Tourism Association came up with the idea of offering lessons in which travelers would learn the history and fundamentals of iaido, culminating with a test of their skills in which they would wield an actual sharpened katana and attempt to slice through a tatami reed practice target, a training activity known as tameshigiri, or 'practice cutting.' It's a unique and dynamic way to experience traditional Japanese culture first-hand, and the program quickly proved to be a big hit, especially among foreign travelers visiting Japan. The Murayama program even received an award for excellence in Sports and Culture Tourism from the Japanese government in 2020. Following Murayama's success, a number of other places in Japan with samurai heritages of their own started similar tourism programs with tameshigiri as the highlight event. When Murayama was first considering including tameshigiri as part of its iaido lessons for tourists, they ran the idea by the Yamagata Prefectural Police, who said that it wouldn't be a problem as long as it was sufficiently supervised. Prefectural authorities in other parts of Japan with tameshigiri-inclusive lessons apparently felt likewise. But last December, Japan's National Police Agency informed the country's prefectural police forces that it finds such programs to be in violation of Japan's Firearm and Sword Control Law, on the grounds that 'Letting groups such as unspecified numbers of tourists use registered [sharpened] swords for temporary entertainment purposes is fundamentally not allowed.' Murayama has since pivoted to tameshigiri demonstrations, in which the iado lesson instructors are the ones doing the cutting with sharpened blades, but the head of the city tourism association laments that something that had been a major draw had to be eliminated. A martial arts instructor in Akita Prefecture, whose dojo also previously offered lessons for travelers that included tameshigri, similarly says that without it the lessons are receiving fewer reservations. Despite swords being a popular symbol of the Japan's historical culture, they're strictly regulated in modern society. Thankfully, Murayama's iaido lessons are still being offered, though without tameshigiri, and hopefully they'll be able to capture enough interest to help preserve the tradition in a vibrant, participatory way, so that it doesn't become a mere relic of the past. Osaka granny idol group Obachaaan is here to cheer you up in newest song 'Overpower'

By Krista Rogers, SoraNews24 Osaka's self-proclaimed oldest idol group, Obachaaan, released its first new song in six years this spring. With the average age of the members being over 70 years old, the group's name is a nod to the Japanese word for an older woman. The group originally formed 12 years ago, releasing its debut song 'Obachaan Theme' and dropping new bops every few years, often with an eye towards helping the community. In true Osaka fashion, the members wear flashy, animal-print shirts, sprinkle in words in the Osaka dialect, and move with a powerful flair, not letting age get in the way of their ambitions. The uptempo new song titled 'Overpower' is a song of empowerment which also incorporates a pun in the way that the word is pronounced in Japanese – obapawaa, which sounds like 'oba power.' As the group's first official release since the COVID pandemic, layered with general anxiety about the state of the world, rising prices in Japan, and so on, this time the members wanted to dispense words of encouragement (along with free candy) such as 'overcome every storm with a smile' in the lyrics. 77-year-old Eiko Funai, the main visual granny in the group with her trademark red waist scarf, shared, 'It's a song that can give anyone strength. We hope that you listen to this song when you feel down and cheer up.' Adding to that sentiment is producer Yusuku Hiza, who said, 'I thought that we need meddling and nagging old women like them in today's age.' ▼ 'Overpower' official music video Just check out this powerful earworm of a chorus, which you should repeat to yourself whenever you're feeling a bit blue: 'Overpower Obachaaan power Overpower We give you that power Overpower From Osaka Overpower Over the world' Another fun piece of trivia is that the dance moves for 'Overpower' were choreographed by Osaka-native Akane, the genius behind the famous Tomioka High School Dance Club's 'bubbly dance.' The music video is super fun as well, incorporating visual effects such as Eiko essentially making a Dragon Ball-style Spirit Bomb heart and a background of exploding rocks at one point (just in case you still needed convincing that the ladies are here to rock your world). While the release of a new song was long overdue in our book, Obachaaan is also being strategic with its timing since the 2025 World Expo is currently taking place in Osaka. In the words of the members, while the Expo (banpaku) is great and all, they also hope that there will be an opportunity for them to perform at the obanpaku – another pun on obachan. We can only hope that the expo organizers will take the hint so that the world can be showered with 'obachaaan power.'
