Belawai boat capsized due to overloading, say police
PETALING JAYA : Overloading caused a boat to capsize off Belawai, Sarawak, killing 10 people on Saturday, say police.
Sarikei police chief Aswandy Anis said an early investigation found that the fibreglass boat was not designed to carry 17 people or the extra baggage it had, Kosmo reported.
'The small boat became hard to control and sank after it encountered rough waves,' he said at a press conference after a search-and-rescue operation this morning.
The Sarawak fire and rescue department said rescuers had found five more victims in the morning, bringing the total number of casualties to 10.
A spokesman said the bodies of the victims – all Indonesian nationals – were recovered by villagers as well as the Sarawak coast guard.
In the incident at about 2pm on Saturday, the fibreglass boat carrying 17 Indonesian nationals from the Kampung Belawai fishermen's jetty capsized en route to the Zion Pelita coconut plantation jetty.
The seven survivors comprised four men, two women and a boy.
Aswandy reminded boat operators and residents to priortise safety while travelling in both the rivers and the sea.
'Don't take safety lightly. Even rivers can see sudden strong waves,' he said.

Woman charged with attempted murder of policeman in Setapak car ramming incident
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — A woman pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of attempting to murder a police officer by ramming her car into him and causing injury earlier this month. Cham Shan Jer, 31, is accused of ramming her car into Cpl Muhamad Fahrulradi Sabran at Jalan Usahawan 6, Setapak, around 11.15 pm on Aug 1. She was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of 10 years and a fine. If the act causes injury, the penalty can extend to 20 years' imprisonment, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Ikhwan Mohd Nasir objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the case involving an alleged attempt to kill a police officer. However, defence counsel Nurul Fatihah Abdul Ghani urged the court to grant bail, citing that her client, a single mother of three, also cares for her elderly parents. 'My client is a single mother. We request bail to be set at the lowest possible amount,' she said. Judge Dr Azrol Abdullah denied bail and fixed Sept 23 for case mention and submission of documents. — Bernama

Four Malaysians held as Singapore seizes heroin, meth worth RM1.55m in island-wide raids
SINGAPORE, Aug 11 — Four Malaysians were among 79 suspected drug offenders arrested in an island-wide anti-drug operation in Singapore from August 4 to 8, where drugs estimated to be worth more than S$470,000 (approximately RM1,550,000) were seized, according to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB). The agency said a total of about 3,457g of heroin, 909g of 'Ice', 3g of cannabis, five 'Ecstasy' tablets, five Erimin-5 tablets and one bottle of GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) were seized during the five-day operation. CNB said that a 25-year-old Malaysian man was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint on August 5 for attempting to smuggle drugs into Singapore via a Malaysian-registered car. Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) had directed the car for enhanced checks and found several biscuit packages suspected to contain controlled drugs on the rear passenger seat. 'CNB officers were immediately alerted to the detection and conducted further checks. The biscuit packages were later found to contain about 2,033g of heroin and 731g of 'Ice',' CNB said in a statement today. On August 6, CNB officers arrested a 39-year-old Malaysian man and a 43-year-old Malaysian woman, together with a 53-year-old Singaporean man, for suspected drug offences following an operation in the vicinity of Jurong West and Henderson Road. The Malaysian man was found with 60g of 'Ice' and keycards to a hotel located in the vicinity of Geylang. 'With the keycards recovered, CNB officers swiftly raided the hotel rooms and found a total of about 1,421g of heroin, 62g of 'Ice' and drug paraphernalia,' the agency added. CNB said that later the same day, through follow-up investigations, a second operation was launched in the vicinity of Tampines, resulting in the arrest of a 28-year-old Malaysian man.
