Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 26: SignDesk Research Council today released their research study titled "Beyond the Signature: How India's Corporate Legal Teams Are Embracing Digital Contracts". The first of its kind in India, the research offers an unprecedented look into how in-house legal departments across the country are navigating the shift from manual, paper-based workflows to digital and automated contract management.
With 82% of corporate legal teams citing delays and manual dependencies as key pain points, the report underscores an urgent need for legal departments to adopt intelligent contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems to stay competitive and compliant.
Surveying over 500 legal professionals across sectors such as BFSI, tech, pharma, manufacturing, and retail, the study spans India's major metros--including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, and Kolkata. Respondents included general counsels, legal ops heads, and legal managers from large enterprises, mid-market firms to startups.
Key Findings: A Legal Function at an Inflection Point
- Digital Adoption is Growing, But Partial: 43% of respondents have implemented some form of e-signature or digital contract tool, yet only 18% have adopted a fully integrated Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) system.
- BFSI Leads the Way: Over 75% of BFSI organizations use e-signatures; across other industries, adoption stands at 53%.
- Time, Compliance, and Cost Drive Transformation: 86% cite time efficiency, 74% stronger compliance, and 68% cost savings as primary motivators for going digital.
- Barriers Remain Significant: 57% of legal teams remain offline due to concerns over legal validity (52%), client reluctance (45%), and cybersecurity (41%).
- Regulatory Clarity Lags Awareness: Only 39% of professionals were fully aware of Indian laws supporting e-signatures, despite robust frameworks under the IT Act, DPDPA 2023, and Aadhaar-based authentication rules.
- City-Wise Trends: Bengaluru (58%), Mumbai (54%), and Delhi NCR (51%) lead digital adoption, while Kolkata (35%) and Chennai (37%) lag.
- Automation as the Next Frontier: 74% of legal teams express strong intent to adopt automated tools for drafting, versioning, risk flagging, and reminders.
The study also outlines a seven-phase roadmap for legal departments to digitally transform, from conducting internal audits and stakeholder education to selecting scalable platforms and tracking measurable impact.
"As a leader in the digital contracts space, SignDesk has taken the initiative to publish this study to help organisations take decisive action," said Krupesh Bhat, Founder & CEO of SignDesk. "The findings show that most legal teams are stuck in outdated processes, which not only drain productivity but also pose serious compliance and risk management challenges. Our goal is to equip forward-thinking organisations with the insights they need to be future-ready in contract lifecycle management."
With this report, the SignDesk Research Council aims to spark dialogue, share actionable insights, and equip legal teams with the tools and confidence to lead digital transformation from the frontlines.

PM to begin five-nation tour next week, visit Brazil for Brics Summit

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a five-nation tour next week to participate in the Brics Summit in Brazil and to bolster India's relations with several key nations of the Global South, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday. The Indian side is expected to seek the Brics bloc's support for its campaign against cross-border terrorism in the wake of last month's clashes with Pakistan (REUTERS) The main engagement of the week-long visit, expected to begin on July 2, will be Modi's participation in the Brics Summit in Rio de Janeiro during July 6-7, the people said on condition of anonymity. This will be clubbed with a bilateral visit to Brazil to strengthen relations between two important members of the Brics grouping. In addition to focusing on measures to strengthen economic cooperation between members of Brics - it brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) - the summit is expected to discuss the fallout of conflicts around the globe. The Indian side is expected to seek the bloc's support for its campaign against cross-border terrorism in the wake of last month's clashes with Pakistan, the people said. Brazil, the current president of Brics, has listed Global South cooperation and partnerships for social, economic and environmental development as its priorities for the summit. Other members of Brics such as Russia have been pushing for an alternative payments system with greater trade settlement in domestic currencies to reduce dependence on the US dollar. The Indian side has decided to go ahead with the visit despite reports that both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are not expected to attend the summit. The South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's invitation to Modi for a state dinner after the Brics summit may have influenced Beijing's decision, as Xi could have been 'perceived as a supporting actor' at the gathering. There has been no official announcement from India or the five countries regarding Modi's visit so far. Besides Brazil, Modi will also visit Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Ghana and Namibia, the people said. These visits are in keeping with India's efforts to forge stronger relations with key players of the Global South and to bolster economic and trade relations with countries such as Argentina, which is being eyed as a potential supplier of rare earth minerals, the people said. Defence and security collaboration, counter-terrorism cooperation, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, food security, energy partnerships, digitalisation and reform of global governance institutions will also be a key part of discussions with the four other countries to be visited by the Prime Minister, the people said. The visits to Ghana and Namibia will also reinforce India's focus on Africa, especially for development cooperation and bolstering of trade ties, as part of efforts to counter China's expanding footprint in the continent, the people said.

Corporate debt levels: Indian companies' debt growth slows to 2.9% in FY25; firms turn inwards for funds

Indian companies appear to be turning inward to fund their growth, reporting a slowdown in debt accumulation over the past five years, a new report by the Bank of Baroda said. The research, which analysed the debt levels of non-financial corporates, found that total borrowings rose from Rs 20.7 lakh crore in FY21 to Rs 22.6 lakh crore in FY25, reflecting a modest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9 per cent. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This is a sharp decline compared to the 8.7 per cent CAGR recorded between FY15 and FY20, ANI cited the BoB report. "Growth in debt in the five years ending FY25 was slower than that in the preceding five-year period," the report noted. Debt growth has not been uniform across the years. There was a 5.9 per cent rise in FY21 but the pace dropped significantly to 1.4 per cent in FY22. However, FY23 saw an uptick of 5.7 per cent, followed by a decline of 0.7 per cent in FY24, which the report said was largely due to deleveraging, where companies actively paid off loans to reduce their debt burden. Despite this subdued borrowing, corporate investment in fixed assets remained healthy. This suggested that firms have increasingly turned to internal accruals, profits retained within the company, for funding their expansion plans, rather than relying on external debt. The report also offered a sector-wise analysis, revealing that power, crude oil, telecom, and infrastructure continue to dominate the corporate debt landscape. Out of the 25 sectors studied, 13 recorded a debt growth rate higher than the overall average of 2.9 per cent. Notably, telecom, power, and infrastructure-related industries saw strong growth in debt levels, supported by increased government capital expenditure and a steady flow of new orders. The report also examined how responsive corporate debt levels have been to changes in Gross Value Added (GVA), excluding sectors such as agriculture, financial services, real estate, professional services, and public administration. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It found that this correlation has weakened in the period following FY20, further indicating that companies are increasingly funding their growth through internal accruals rather than borrowing. The findings show that companies are becoming more careful with their finances, taking on less debt and paying off the old ones.
