ANC's 'better life for all' mantra remains a pipedream

On June 26, 1955, the Freedom Charter was adopted in Kliptown, Soweto in Johannesburg. This document envisioned a free South Africa post-apartheid. It gave hope of a better future where people's dignity would be restored, and racial stratification be a thing of the past. This gave hope for a better life for all South Africans. Of the ten clauses in the Freedom Charter as the focal points, a few stood out and have been ventilated over the years.
The first clause stated that 'The people shall govern.' This assumed that a government of the people would be constituted, not the apartheid government which represented a white minority. The fourth promise was that 'The land shall be shared among those who work it.' Implicit in this vision was that the black majority who tilled the land would own it. The eighth clause stated that 'The doors of learning and culture shall be opened.' This brought a glimmer of hope to the students. There were other promises of the sharing of the country's wealth and assurance that all racial groups would have equal rights.
The year 2025 marks 70 years since the adoption of the Freedom Charter. This happens at a time when the ANC is no longer the governing party but is part of a multiparty coalition government following its failure to obtain the required fifty-plus-one threshold in the 2024 general election. However, the ANC has led South Africa during the first six administrations since 1994. As such, it had enough time to implement the promises of the Freedom Charter.
Five questions arise. The first question is 'how far have the promises of the Freedom Charter been achieved under the ANC government? Secondly, to what extent have opposition political parties held the ANC accountable so that it could deliver on the promises contained in the Freedom Charter? Thirdly, following the ANC's dismal performance in the 2024 general election, are opposition parties capitalising on the ANC's weakness or are they allowing the ANC to regain its lost ground? Fourthly, to what extent is the ANC regrouping as it prepares for the 2026 Local Government Election (LGE)? Lastly and importantly, what can we expect in the much-anticipated LGE given the current politics in the country?
On the first question, it depends on who is being asked. Many South Africans believe that the ANC has reneged on its promise to implement the clauses of the Freedom Charter. They base their assessment on the condition of their lives and unfulfilled promises made by the ANC in each election.
However, the ANC holds the view that of the ten clauses, only two have not been fulfilled. These are clause three which says, 'The people shall share in the country's wealth' and clause four which says, 'The land shall be shared among those who work it.' But even with these clauses, the ANC claims that it is a work in progress. ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe argues that the ANC has lived to the ideals of the Freedom Charter. Therefore, it is safe to say that the answers to the first question are subjective.
The second question is more important. The mandate of opposition political parties (especially the main opposition) is to keep the governing party on its toes. After the 1994 general election, the National Party (NP) was pushed to the opposition benches. It failed to hold the ANC accountable. Instead, it split into two and eventually collapsed.
In 1999, the Democratic Party (DP) of Tony Leon assumed the position of being the official opposition. From 2004 to 2024 the Democratic Alliance was the official opposition party. It failed to hold the ANC accountable. Despite its scathing attack on the ANC, it is now co-governing with the ANC in the multiparty coalition.
The third question speaks to the current situation. The newly formed Mkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) is the official opposition. Together with the EFF and other smaller parties, it should be positioning itself as an alternative. However, currently, the party is unstable. This instability is exemplified by the recent swearing-in of nine new members in the National Assembly and some movements in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
Even in the leadership of the party outside parliament, there is instability. The recent removal of Floyd Shivambu from the position of Secretary General and his subsequent media briefing which laid bare his sour relations with the party confirm instability in the SG position. The EFF is also facing problems of its own – including a decline in its support base.
The fourth question speaks directly to the ANC. The party is on record talking about the renewal agenda. However, this seems to be political rhetoric rather than something tangible. KwaZulu-Natal where the party recorded its highest loss has seen more activity. Firstly, the provincial leadership structure was reconfigured. A few days ago, the ANC's 11 regions were disbanded by the current leadership. While these might be touted as part of the renewal process, some might argue that it has the potential to further divide the party.
In parliament, the ANC faced a backlash on the budget issue – especially the proposed 2% VAT hike. This happened against the backdrop of what happened in the sixth administration when the ANC used its numbers to protect President Ramaphosa after the Phala Phala saga. Even the party's working relations (or lack thereof) with the DA have drawn interest from the public. So, is the ANC really renewing itself or is the renewal agenda only existing on paper?
The last question about next year's LGE touches on all political parties – both those who are in the coalition and opposition parties. The former must account to the electorate about what they have been doing since the start of the seventh administration. Opposition parties must explain to the public if they have held the coalition government accountable or if they were fixated on their internal issues.
As we reflect on the Freedom Charter, objective reflections are crucial.

JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) has called on the Democratic Alliance (DA) to clarify whether it intends to stay in the Government of National Unity (GNU) or return to its role as an opposition party. This comes after the DA's announcement at a media briefing in Cape Town on Saturday, that it would boycott the National Dialogue. The party said it would not participate in the process unless President Cyril Ramaphosa removes ministers implicated in corruption. The latest tension within the GNU was triggered by Ramaphosa's dismissal of DA Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Andrew Whitfield. Whitfield was removed from the position after undertaking an unauthorised international trip. In response, the DA threatened to table a motion of no-confidence against the president and pulled out of the National Dialogue. The ANC has criticised the DA's move, calling it disingenuous to boycott the dialogue simply because Whitfield was fired. 'The ANC reiterates that the National Dialogue is rooted in this proud tradition. It seeks to bring all sectors of society together to address the pressing socio-economic challenges confronting our country, including poverty, inequality, and economic exclusion, through inclusive engagement and joint commitment to solutions,' said ANC spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri. 'At this juncture, it is imperative for the DA to clarify its stance: is it a genuine and principled partner in the GNU, or is it positioning itself as a quasi-opposition within the executive? South Africans deserve clarity and leadership guided by national interest, not short-term political expediency,' she added. The former liberation party also said the DA's actions undermine the spirit of the GNU and appear aimed at sowing disruption within the executive. CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is threatening a motion of no confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa if he doesn't step up against corruption. As the party's 48-hour ultimatum deadline ran out on Saturday for Ramaphosa to act against ANC ministers accused of corruption, the DA announced it would opt out of the national dialogue. ALSO READ: The much-vaunted dialogue, which aims to set a policy direction for the government of national unity (GNU), is set to start in August after several delays. But the DA says if it includes corrupt ANC MPs, it will be nothing more than an electioneering ploy ahead of next year's local government elections. DA leader John Steenhuisen says Ramaphosa doesn't enjoy unfettered executive powers having been put in that position on the back of his party's good faith. And it expects him to live up to his promise to clean house, starting in front of his own doorstep. "The people of South Africa voted for change. They did not vote for more of the same. They did not vote for more of the Zuma years where the corrupt and those responsible for maladministration are shielded and protected." Steenhuisen is again putting Ramaphosa on terms, saying if he doesn't act against questionable ministers, it will act against him. "It is clear that the DA is in the process of losing confidence in the president's ability to act as a leader, not only of the ANC, but of the GNU of which we are the second largest component." In the meantime, the DA says it will be rejecting the budget votes of departments where corruption-accused ministers are at the helm, imperilling the final hurdle of the budget process, which starts this week.

EFF demands Minister Tau explain ANC appointments to IDC board

The EFF is calling on Minister of Trade and Industry Parks Tau to explain the recent appointments of high-profile ANC figures to the IDC board, questioning the criteria and motivations behind these appointments. Image: Cape Argus Mzwandile Masina, chairperson of a Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition, is mulling over a request by the EFF to summon Minister Parks Tau to appear before committee to be grilled on the appointments of prominent ANC figures to Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). Masina said on Sunday that he has responded to the EFF in writing, undertaking to provide a detailed answer within 48 hours after Monday, pending consultation with Parliament's legal advisors. The EFF had asked Masina to summon Tau to explain the appointment process for Ayanda Dlodlo, Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube, and Dr Sydney Mufamadi to the IDC board, questioning the criteria used and suggesting the appointments are politically driven. Asked if he will grant the EFF's request and summon Tau to appear before the committee, Masina said: 'I have written to the EFF and undertook to respond fully in writing within 48 hours after Monday. Next Stay Close ✕ EFF national spokesperson and MP Sinawo Thambo expressed grave concern over the recent appointments of the three ANC loyalists to the IDC board. 'All three of these individuals are deeply entrenched ANC loyalists, with lengthy careers inside government structures under the ANC-led administration,' the party said in the letter to Masina. The EFF pointed out that Dlodlo has a history of serving in senior government positions as an ANC-aligned official, including stints as Minister of State Security and Minister of Public Service and Administration. The EFF also highlighted that Dube-Ncube is a former ANC-elected Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, while Mufamadi is a veteran ANC figure who remains deeply embedded in the party's political circles. Thambo said: 'It is further alarming that Dr Dube-Ncube was recently removed from a proposed appointment to the BANKSETA (Banking Sector Education and Training Authority) board, following concerns over the irregularity of her nomination. Her reappearance on the IDC board, so soon after this debacle, suggests that public institutions are being used to recycle and reward ANC-aligned figures, and not based on skill or strategic fit, but due to political favour.' He questioned the appointments, saying they are not only inappropriate but also compromise the IDC's role as a developmental finance institution aimed at driving industrial transformation, supporting black industrialists, and fostering inclusive economic growth. He said the EFF has formally requested the portfolio committee to urgently summon Tau to appear and provide a full explanation of the selection process for the IDC board appointments, among other pressing concerns. The party also wants Tau to explain the criteria used to assess the suitability of the appointees and whether they possess the necessary industrial or developmental expertise and experience to justify their appointments. 'As the legislative oversight body, the Portfolio Committee has a duty to prevent the continued erosion of governance, and to ensure that public entities like the IDC are not transformed into political patronage networks,' the EFF said. Tau's spokesperson, Yamkela Fanisi, has yet to respond to a request for comment on whether the Minister considers the appointments of the trio to be above board and fair. The IDC, on the other hand, has welcomed Gloria Serobe as its new board chairperson, along with six other new members. Serobe, co-founder and CEO of Women Investment Portfolio Holdings, brings extensive experience in governance and business leadership, having held senior roles at Denel, Adcorp, Sasfin, Old Mutual, and Nedbank.
