KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister
Mamata Banerjee
on Thursday combined an enhanced handout for Durga Puja organisers this year with an appeal to them to stand by migrant labourers returning home because of harassment in BJP-governed states.
Banerjee, reminding everyone of their social responsibility, asked clubs and puja organisers as well as the local administration to "give new clothes to those returning because of torture and harassment". "Everything has been snatched from them. We do not tolerate this torture nor do we believe in torturing others," Banerjee said, referring to the plight of Bengali-speaking migrant workers.
The CM announced an increased state grant of Rs 1.1 lakh for Durga Puja committees in Bengal, up from last year's Rs 85,000, and Rs 70,000 in 2023.
Concessions on electricity bills, too, have been increased to 80% (it was 75% last year). And, like last year, the state fire department will not levy any charge.

"Some people claim that Mamata Banerjee does not allow pujas. Every household celebrates puja here. There is no puja that does not happen in Bengal. But, then, some people even go to court questioning why there should be assistance for pujas. This is a festival but it is a means of livelihood for so many as well.

Youngsters from every neighbourhood leave their household chores to focus on themes to make their pujas successful.
One puja ends and they start planning for another," she said, referring to the commerce around the festive season.
Puja organisers backed the the CM's stance. The hiked payout to 43,000-plus puja organisers will cost the state exchequer around Rs 473 crore (up from last year's Rs 365.5 crore). "But the money circulates in the market.
It contributes to the Durga Puja economy, which may be around Rs 80,000 crore now," Saswata Bose, general secretary of Forum for Durgotsav, an umbrella organisation representing all major Durga Puja organisers, said.
Chief minister Mamta Banerjee announced that the carnival would be held on October 5, a day before Lakshmi Puja. Immersions will start on Oct 2 and end on Oct 4 (except for the pujas invited to the carnival). Kolkata police commissioner Manoj Verma announced that the single-window Asaan Durga Puja permission portal would be up and running from Aug 22.

TMC slams BJP over ‘citizenship' status of its 2 Bongaon MLAs

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: A fresh controversy has erupted over the citizenship status of two BJP MLAs in Bongaon, ratcheting up the political temperature between Trinamool and BJP over the special intensive revision (SIR) of poll rolls. The names of the MLAs' parents are missing from the recently published Bengal 2002 SIR data. The issue surfaced after the TMC-backed faction of All India Matua Mahasangha submitted a deputation to the Bongaon sub-divisional officer (SDO) on Tuesday, demanding the disqualification of Bongaon North MLA Ashok Kirtaniya. The organisation alleged that while the 2002 electoral roll contains the MLA's name — then a resident of Ghatbaur panchayat — it does not include the names of his father or other family members. The Mahasangha claimed Kirtaniya's father entered India illegally after 2010. Prosenjit Biswas, representing the Mahasangha, said: "We will approach the Union home minister and assembly speaker seeking Ashok Kirtaniya's disqualification as an MLA." Bongaon district TMC president Biswajit Das said, "Usually, the father's name appears in the voter list before the son's. Here, the son was registered first, the father later. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Egypt Solar Panels: See How Much It Will Cost To Install Them (See Prices) Solar Panel | Search Ads Learn More Undo Let Kirtaniya prove this. "Let TMC say what they want. I have all documents. They are making these allegations only to harass me," he said. Before this row could settle, similar allegations emerged against Bongaon South BJP MLA Swapan Majumdar. Trinamool accused him of being a Bangladeshi national, claiming that neither he nor his parents were listed in the 2002 rolls. Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, youth president of Bongaon's TMC's organisational district, lodged a written complaint with the SDO and also shared documents with the media. These included two Bangladeshi records — one from April 2022 in which the chairman of Nizamuddin Union Parishad claimed that Majumdar's family members were residents of Nishchintapur village in Gopalganj, and another from 1996 showing his father, Santosh Kumar Majumdar, as the seller in a land deed. TMC alleged that Majumdar moved to India after 2002 and illegally enrolled in the voter list in Palla under Gopalnagar PS. Denying the allegations, Majumdar said: "My father passed away before 2002. I moved to Mumbai for work, so I couldn't be physically present during voter list hearings, which is why my name was added later. I possess all necessary documents proving my Indian citizenship. TMC is trying to shield infiltrator Rohingya and grant citizenship to refugees." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). TVK not alternate, but primary force that will win: Vijay

Madurai: The second state conference of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to be held in Madurai on Aug 21 will set the stage for 'Vaagai Soodum Varalaru Thirumbugiradhu: Vetri Peraniyil Tamil Nadu' (History of victory returns: Tamil Nadu on march to victory) election campaign, party founder Vijay said on Tuesday. The slogan is seen by some as alluding to former chief minister MGR's victory. In a statement, Vijay said the campaign will target the ideological and political enemies of TVK and aim for victory. "In Madurai, the place where three branches of the Tamil language were nurtured, without any compromises, we will fight against our ideological and political enemies and win this war for democracy," he said. He extended an open invitation to his supporters for the conference. The actor-turned politician said the goal of the conference was to cement the party's stance on creating good governance for the people of Tamil Nadu. "We are not an alternate force. We will show the world that we are a primary force that will reclaim victory," he added. Earlier, TVK general secretary N Anand told reporters that police have granted full permission for the conference venue at Parapatti after complying with certain guidelines and regulations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If Your Ears Ring, Stop Sleeping Like This Immediately Derila Ergo Undo "Police sought responses to 42 questions, for which we gave satisfactory replies. Anand has been holding consultative meetings with cadres from neighbouring Dindigul, Theni, and Sivaganga districts over the past few days. Police have also asked the party to ensure separate arrangements for vulnerable people like pregnant women and the elderly, prevent traffic disruptions, set up barricades for crowd movement as well as fences for areas where Vijay is set to appear. SGPC, DSGMC clash over Guru Tegh Bahadur martyrdom anniv

Amritsar: A war of words has erupted between the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) over the observance of Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom anniversary, after SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami accused DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka of hastily announcing commemoration programmes without coordination with the SGPC. Kalka, in the recent past, wrote a letter to Dhami urging that the commemoration functions should be held jointly, which would reflect the spirit of Panthic unity. "Since Guru Sahib attained martyrdom at the site of Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Delhi, the main functions will be centred there," the letter stated, while adding that these commemoration events will be presided over by the SGPC. Responding to this, Dhami on Tuesday questioned, "Why was Kalka's proposal limited to a letter while he was independently announcing programmes and holding meetings with different organisations?" Dhami said that the DSGMC president should not have hastily announced his own programmes, but rather coordinated with the SGPC. In reply to Dhami's response, Kalka said that DSGMC requested the SGPC president to play the role of an elder brother in organising the 350th martyrdom anniversary commemorations of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. He said, in the recent past, he held meetings with various Panthic organisations in Amritsar during which the representatives of the SGPC were also present, who assured that they would not create any disruption in the events being organised by the DSGMC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brandi's Journey: Life After Storage Wars Paperela Undo DSGMC general secretary, Jagdeep Singh Kahlon, said DSGMC has the primary right to organise the 350th martyrdom commemorations of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, as both the Guru's martyrdom and his final rites took place in Delhi. Citing this, he said the DSGMC sought support from all Panthic institutions and sects, who, in turn, assured their full cooperation. Giving further details, Kalka said that with the support of the Sangat, the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib will be commemorated on a grand scale, in a way that will be remembered across the world. The historic events will be held not only at Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, the site of Guru Sahib's martyrdom, and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib, where his last rites were performed, but also at the Red Fort. These events will witness participation from the country's top leadership, he claimed. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
