New phase of pavement repairs now under way

Yahoo03-07-2025
The next phase of a programme to repair and improve pavements and add bollards along a road in Leicester is now under way.
Leicester City Council is carrying out the scheme in Melton Road, which sees old, uneven and broken slabs replaced with new block paving.
The current scheme is being carried out between Ascot Road and Herbert Avenue, on the northbound side of Melton Road, and between Acorn Street and Marfitt Street, on the southbound.
The work, set to cost about £685,000, will be the second phase of a planned programme of investment to improve several sections of footway along Melton Road in coming years, subject to funding.
Work to replace the existing uneven pavement on the outbound stretch of the street, between Ascot Road and Checketts Road, was carried out last year.
Also included in the work is the covering of existing tree pits with a porous resin-bound material to help improve drainage and the installation of new drainage channels where required.
Damaged footpaths caused by tree roots will be repaired as well, with new bollards added along with new cycle racks where possible to prevent vehicles parking on the pavement, the council said.
The authority added that work will be carried out in sections to help minimise disruption to pedestrians and nearby businesses and is expected to take about 50 weeks to complete.
Some short-term lane restrictions on part of Melton Road may be required to ensure a safe working environment.
Leicester mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: "This ongoing investment in repairing and replacing broken and uneven pavements on Melton Road will help improve the look and feel of the area and make it more attractive for residents and shoppers.
"Projects like this are an important part of ensuring that our neighbourhood shopping streets and busy routes into the city stay looking their best."

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS counter-suing Tottenham relating to Harry Kane's Bayern Munich move

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's car company INEOS Automotive is counter-suing Tottenham Hotspur for more than £1million. In legal documents filed to the High Court earlier this month, INEOS' lawyers have disputed Tottenham's claim from June, in which the Premier League club sued the company for £11million ($14.8m). Advertisement The legal dispute centres on the 'Official Partnership Agreement' between Tottenham and INEOS that was signed in December 2022. This agreement was intended to grant INEOS commercial sponsorship rights for almost five years, specifically relating to the 'INEOS Grenadier' brand in exchange for almost £17.5m in sponsorship fees, not including indexation. That sponsorship deal has now collapsed. Tottenham argued in their 'Particulars of Claim', filed to the High Court in June and seen by The Athletic, that they terminated the agreement on March 11 this year. They cited INEOS' failure to pay an indexation payment of almost £480,000, which was due by 16 August 2024, and a sponsorship fee of £5.1m, which was due by 1 December 2024, as well as another interest charge of almost £300,000. Tottenham's claim describes the failure to pay as a 'material breach of the agreement'. Tottenham have also claimed damages of more than £5.2m for breach of contract. INEOS has always maintained their right to terminate the agreement. In INEOS' 'Defence and Counterclaim', also seen by The Athletic, they argue that the company wrote to terminate the agreement in a letter dated December 6 2024, in effect from 30 June 2025. Their argument is that neither the indexation payment of almost £480,000 nor the sponsorship fee of £5.1m are therefore payable. INEOS further argue that Tottenham were 'not entitled to terminate the Agreement'. INEOS' counterclaim argues that Tottenham 'failed to grant' INEOS rights from 11 March 2025, when they wrote to INEOS to terminate the agreement, until 30 June 2025, 'when the Agreement terminated pursuant to the INEOS Termination Letter'. For these 112 days, INEOS has claimed damages of £1,073,972.60. The INEOS' counterclaim also makes reference to discussions between Tottenham and German car giant Audi at the time that Harry Kane was transferred from Tottenham to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023. The 'Defence and Counterclaim' starts by referring to a 'highly significant series of events' in which Tottenham 'started negotiating with a major competitor to INEOS'. The counterclaim argues that the club 'was not entitled to have discussions with a Competitor in connection with any rights which were the same as, or substantially similar to, the Rights granted to INEOS'. Advertisement The document states that, on August 3 2023, Tottenham's then-chief commercial officer Todd Kline told INEOS chairman Ashley Reed he 'had been in discussions' with Audi: 'According to Mr Kline, the discussions and/or negotiations related to a proposed transfer of the Club's player Harry Kane to the German club FC Bayern Munich.' According to the document, this led to discussions which brought about a new agreement between Tottenham and INEOS, under the terms of which INEOS had the right to terminate the agreement after its third year, provided that INEOS provided the Club with no less than six months' written notice. Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge in San Bernardino will once again connect communities after 5-year closure and rebuild

A critical piece of infrastructure connecting one side of the west side of San Bernardino to the other, which has been out of commission for five years, is now up and running again. The new 270-million-dollar Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge is set for its reopening celebration on Saturday, Aug. 23. The bridge was originally built in 1934 and shut down in 2020 after it was deemed structurally unsound. It was demolished, and the two-year rebuild started in 2023. While it's a quarter mile long, the detour to bypass it can be more than three miles long. "For the last five years, there has not been a point of access to get from one side of the westside of San Bernardino to the other. It's an absolutely critical project," Jeff Kraus, City of San Bernardino, said. Kraus said the impacts of the closure affected nearly everyone, as before its closure, about 60,000 vehicles crossed the bridge daily. "It was a life-link for businesses to reach their customers on the other side of the bridge." The Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge spans 22 rail lines, 20 for BNSF, one for Metrolink, and one for Amtrak. Because of the train tracks beneath, the bridge needed hefty reinforcement. Its construction entailed 53 steel beams – nine of which were 182-feet long, each weighing 125 tons, making them the longest precast girders made for a bridge in the state. "The project has been challenging as the construction had to take place without disrupting the rail yard," the City of San Bernardino wrote on its online homepage. The new bridge features wider lanes, bike lanes, sidewalks, a center median and seismic safety upgrades -- and the city is throwing a party to celebrate. On Saturday, Aug. 23, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of 2nd Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue, there will be a ribbon-cutting, a chance to walk the bridge, along with a classic car show, food trucks, a local vendor fair, and more.

Hundreds of classic cars were on display at a popular car show. The Chepstow Classic Car Show, held at Chepstow Racecourse on Sunday, August 17, attracted car enthusiasts from across the region. Alongside the classic, vintage, and retro cars, the event featured a variety of stalls selling collectors' items, auto jumble, and food. The event was free to attend for anyone under 16, and cost £6 for adults. People were also able to enter their own vintage vehicles into the show for free. The car show was a hit with those who attended, with many sharing pictures of the day on social media. Emma Chambers, who attended the event, said: "Beautiful day for a car show at Chepstow Classic Car Show Plus Auto Jumble & Collectors Fair. "Lots of interesting cars to be seen." Another visitor, Kenneth John Jones, said: "Had another day out with my nephew and two great nephews to Chepstow for the Chepstow Classic Car Show. "We had a great day out looking at all the cars. "We had something to eat, cans of pop to drink, and ice cream. "Again, a great day out with family." A spokesperson for the event said: "We would like to thank everyone who came to the event and supported us. "It was a great turnout and we hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did."
