Johnny Depp surprises diners in Tenerife during filming visit
Depp is in Tenerife filming his new star-studded film Day Drinker
Hollywood star Johnny Depp surprised diners in the Canary Islands when he joined them to sample some local delicacies. Depp is in Tenerife filming his new star-studded film Day Drinker alongside the movies' female lead Penelope Cruz.
The film is being directed by Marc Webb and is described by IMDB as the story of an enigmatic stranger forming an unlikely bond with a grieving bartender who lost her lover, with their lives intertwining in unexpected ways. The star excited the local residents when he showed up unexpectedly at one of the islands' most impressive eateries - Duke Restaurant.
The restaurant initially specialised in Japanese cuisine but expanded to include Mediterranean flavours in its menu.
The restaurant's manager, Lolo Crusellas, posted about his team's experience meeting the celebrity on social media, saying: "With the great pirate Jack Sparrow. Johnny Depp, excellent actor and good person," referencing the actor's turn as the rogue adventurer in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise.

Why you should follow the locals and discover the laid-back charm of the Athens Riviera this summer
After more than 15 years writing about Greece, I've learned that some of the best experiences happen when you veer away from the obvious choices. While most travellers landing in Athens rush toward the islands, I turn my attention to the Athens Riviera – a shimmering stretch of coastline just south of the city. Here, sandy beaches, lazy taverna lunches and sunsets to rival Santorini unfold with the ease of staying on the mainland. For decades, Athenians have sought seaside respite here. Now the Riviera is enjoying a renaissance, drawing international visitors who've discovered they can enjoy a stylish, culture-rich escape – no ferry required. Vouliagmeni quickly emerges as the Riviera's crown jewel. Its palm-lined boulevards and waterfront cafés emit a casual elegance reminiscent of France 's Côte d'Azur, only with a distinctly Greek flair. Hours disappear, relaxing over coffee and seaside strolls, highlighting a life lived outdoors. My personal favourite lies at the foot of limestone cliffs: Lake Vouliagmeni offers one of the Riviera's most surprising swimming spots. Warmed to 25C by underground springs, the mineral-rich mix of salt and freshwater creates a natural spa with tiny garra rufa 'medicine' fish nibbling at your toes, leaving you lighter, drawing away any tension. Luxury is also threaded through the Riviera's fabric. At Astir Beach, a favourite among stylish Athenians, sprawl on immaculate loungers with drinks and snacks delivered directly to your cabana. Behind the beach lies something magical – the 6th-century Temple of Apollo Zoster, accidentally unearthed by orphaned children in 1924. It's a reminder that even beach days here brush up against Greece's ancient soul. Further along the coast, the landscape grows more elemental. Cape Sounio reveals itself dramatically with the great marble columns of the Temple of Poseidon catching the last light of the day, perched high on the cliff. It's no wonder this is a romantic pilgrimage for many. You can easily imagine sailors of old offering prayers for safe passage at this wind-swept headland. What makes the Athens Riviera so memorable is how seamlessly mythological grandeur blends with everyday Greek life; sipping freddo espresso at Flisvos Marina, watching fishing boats bob beside superyachts, or a spontaneous dip at Kavouri Beach, where hardy locals swim year-round. Culture is close, too. Just inland lies the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, a modern marvel of glass and greenery that houses both the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera. Its park, with fountains and sculpture-dotted paths, offers a refreshing contrast to the coast. Where to eat Dining here is a highlight. In Vouliagmeni and nearby Glyfada, seafood tavernas deliver platters of freshly-caught fish. For something more polished, Barbarossa Paros is part of the sleek new 91 Athens Riviera complex with an extensive menu that offers locally sourced ingredients. Enjoy sushi on select evenings and sip crisp Malagousia wine alongside the beach. For Michelin-starred dining, Varoulko Seaside in Piraeus is unmissable. Chef Lefteris Lazarou reimagines seafood with flair. Highly recommended is the shrimp pastitsio. For old-school taverna charm, dine with the locals at Dourbeis, also in Piraeus. Open since 1932, the fish soup, whole sea bream and seafood linguine are classics for good reason. Where to stay Accommodation here pairs elegance with warmth. The Margi in Vouliagmeni (doubles from €540/£460) is an intimate boutique hotel surrounded by pine forest and a 20-minute walk to Lake Vouliagmeni. With only 89 rooms, it combines refined elegance with a warm Greek welcome and farm-to-table ethos thanks to its own organic farm. Breakfasts of homemade yoghurt, fresh fruit, and local honey take centre stage. For next-level luxury, 91 Athens Riviera in Voula (cabana from €486/£410) is redefining the Riviera. A chic glamping-meets-beach-club concept from Domes Resorts, the 28 beautifully designed sleeping cabanas – many with private plunge pool – are ideal for couples or families seeking barefoot elegance and privacy. Wellness offerings include an indoor spa, outdoor hydro pools, and a private tennis club. Dining at its Barbarossa restaurant brings Cycladic flair to the mainland, complete with cocktails and beachside seating. If the Athens Riviera is about balancing city access with coastal calm, 91 captures this effortlessly. Heading back to the city reminds me that the soul of Greece isn't found by rushing away to the islands, but by staying close the Greek heartland. Along the glittering Athenian coastline, you'll find the best of the city, season after season. Though increasingly popular, the Riviera retains its charm. Each time I return, I feel as though I've discovered a new charm. How to get there British Airways (prices starting from £260 return) and Aegean Airlines (prices starting from €199/£169) fly direct from London Heathrow and Gatwick to Athens, while and easyJet offers regional UK flights, and Jet2 flies from Birmingham. From Athens airport, it's a 30-45 minute taxi to the Riviera (approx. €40-€50).

Golden Seed: Modern tea atelier in Singapore specialising in quality Chinese teas
It's a weekday afternoon and Millennia Walk has a peaceful air. Most of the little human activity here is from office folk getting a quick caffeine fix, or Japanese housewives stocking up on groceries at Meidi-Ya. There's the occasional group of students chit-chatting over desserts at the handful of cafés, but things are generally quiet. Often overshadowed by its larger, buzzier cousin Suntec City just across the road, this modest two-storey mall isn't a regular haunt for most despite being smack in the middle of Singapore's CBD area – so chances are, you've missed out on its newest gem, Golden Seed. But this zen tea atelier is definitely worth your attention. Golden Seed specialises in Chinese tea, but it isn't at all like your typical traditional teahouse. Instead, it's sleek, modern and filled with natural light, with a clean and minimalistic white-and-neutral colour scheme. You might even mistake it for a luxury skincare parlour or interior designer's office if you're zipping by in a hurry – it's sneakily camouflaged in plain sight alongside the mall's high-end furniture, fashion and beauty boutiques. A large bar counter flanked by heavyset pillars takes up most of the area by the entrance, and this is where your brews are prepared by Golden Seed's tea baristas. Wander further in for various seating configurations: A long marble island with a mini moss garden stretching across its middle; a communal wooden table with benches; window seats suitable for lone patrons; and a cosy set-up against the wall with small round tables, perfect for pairs or foursomes. The window seats are supposed to come with fountain views, but the water feature was unfortunately boarded up for some maintenance work during our visit. There's also a semi-private VIP room where events like workshops and corporate sessions can be held. This, too, offers views of the fountain on usual days. Golden Seed currently offers two types of tea appreciation sets: Tea Journey Awakening ($36 per person) which is suitable for those new to the art of tea, and a more premium Grand Tea Experience ($88, for up to two persons) for those with a more discerning palate. Each category comes with a decent selection for you to choose from; The former has more familiar flavours like da hong pao and long jing, while the latter has less common varieties like pu er that's been aged for over 20 years, and 'horse meat' oolong. Don't worry, it doesn't actually contain horse meat and is named after its place of harvest. Each set is paired with complimentary seasonal tidbits, which could include anything from nuts to mini cakes and Taiwanese-style pineapple tarts. We especially enjoyed the Japanese purple sweet potato mochi, though sharing proved to be a little tricky as it already came in a rather small bite-sized piece. The books on the shelves are all for your browsing pleasure, so don't be shy to pick one up and leaf through its pages as you sip on your brew. We spotted a Beatrix Potter art book, a collection of Dior fashion illustrations, and informative tea journals amongst the titles. There's no seating time limit, so take all the time you need to relax, especially during non-peak hours. In fact, you're more than welcome to hop on over with your laptop and spend an afternoon working here. Some might find the tea here on the expensive side, and we won't disagree. However, we were told that the pricing is as such due to the high quality of the tea leaves, which are personally sourced from China by the owner. The leaves are meant to be brewed multiple times per sitting, so it's not a 'one and done' deal and you'll be able to make the most out of your order with hot water refills. And of course, the tranquil environment is also a real treat that's hard to come by in this ever-busy part of town. If you'd like to bring the experience home, pick up something from Golden Seed's retail corner. Other than beautifully packaged loose leaf tea, there's also drinkware like teapots and teacups and specially curated gift sets for sale. Golden Seed is located at Millenia Walk (#01-72) and opens daily from 11.30am to 8.30pm. Walk-ins are welcome but reservations are recommended. Find out more and make a reservation via its website and Instagram page.
