Ryan O'Kane completes stunning Sligo Rovers comeback to break Cork City hearts as Roy Keane looks on
But manager Ger Nash was denied an overdue triumph by Owen Elding and Patrick McClean's strikes.
City came close to a late winner only for Alex Nolan's wonderstrike to cannon off the crossbar. Rovers then countered, with Ryan O'Kane burying the 89th-minute winner.
Despite 11 remaining games, those goals may have all but condemned City to the drop in front of a 2,673 crowd, which included Roy Keane. They were booed off by the Shed End at the final whistle.
Sligo's recent success has been built on early goals, but Cork grabbed the first at Turner's Cross. Kitt Nelson zipped a quality ball into McLaughlin's feet. He jinked onto his left and deceived Sam Sargeant by whipping the ball inside the near post for his second of the season.
Cathal O'Sullivan was an early casualty as he was helped off, worryingly, rubbing his left knee after attempting to contest a high ball.
Maguire and Nelson had further chances as City were comfortable until the break to hold their first half-time lead in 19 games.
Brann was alert to make a flying save on the resumption as Will Fitzgerald's hit looked destined for the top corner. Fitzgerald headed their next chance over.
From that goal kick, Nelson and Nolan combined down the right to drag the ball back for Maguire to finish at the second attempt.
The two-goal cushion lasted just four minutes. Sligo exploited the vast tracts of empty space around the tiring City defence as Jad Hakiki fed Elding, who finished his ninth of the season after Brann's initial save.
Brann again came up trumps to push around the post from Hakiki, but from Will Fitzgerald's corner, McClean directed a bullet header into the far corner.
And once Nolan's effort bounced away from danger, Sligo came up with a late dagger through O'Kane.
CORK CITY: Brann; Nevin, Feely, Kelleher, Kiernan (Couto 82); Crowley, McLaughlin; O'Sullivan (Nolan 20), Nelson (Kamara 83), Fitzpatrick (Lee 82); Maguire (Lutz 75).
SLIGO ROVERS: Sargeant; Reynolds (Lomboto 70), Denham, McClean, Stewart; McManus, Quirk; Fitzgerald, Hakiki, O'Kane; Elding.

Wexford FC Women come from behind to defeat Shamrock Rovers
The Slaneysiders came into the game on a high after reaching the All-Island final seven days earlier and while the league title is realistically out of reach, the chance to take a top three finish kept the momentum rolling against the Tallaght side. With Freya De Mange out injured and Becky Cassin returning, Wexford reverted to a more familiar system but did interestingly drop Kylie Murphy deeper, while giving Ellen Molloy the role at the top of the formation. There's not a defence in the country that would prefer to see Molloy in that position rather than deeper and the reason why was obvious, with the Kilkenny native dragging and pulling the two centre-backs all over the place with her elusiveness on the ball, when given decent supply. However, Wexford had the first problem in the fifth minute when Anna Butler got to the byline and crossed to the six-yard box. A rare spill by Maria O'Sullivan saw the ball squirm towards the goal-line but Lauren Dwyer, making her 200th appearance for the club, hooked the ball off the line. Molloy, in her advanced position, took control of the ball near the edge of the area, drove at the Rovers defence and unleashed a powerful strike that Summer Lawless was able to get behind and hold. In the ninth minute Leah McGrath got away on the right-hand side and crossed to the middle where Molloy flicked towards an unmarked Ciara Rossiter. The left-winger controlled and let fly but her effort whizzed past the far post. Molloy continued to cause problems and off-loaded for Aoife Kelly to fire an effort on target as the hosts looked for the breakthrough. After a quiet few minutes, Molloy had another chance, this time forcing Lawless into an excellent save when lashing Rossiter's cross on target. The game continued to settle into a pattern of midfield probing, that was until Shamrock Rovers took the lead when a sliced shot by Jaime Thompson fell at the feet of Ella Kelly at the back post and she fired to the net from an acute angle. Having done very little to deserve a lead in the opening half-hour, Rovers were lifted by the opening goal and went close to a second when Emily Corbet fired in a shot that Maria O'Sullivan parried to safety. The Wexford 'keeper saved from Kelly from the edge of the area in the 37th minute, while Claire O'Reilly flashed over the crossbar from Anna Butler's cross from the right. Scarlett Herron tested O'Sullivan at the end of the half as the interval whistle came at the right time for the hosts. Wexford emerged from the interval with a positive attitude and Cassin sent an effort just wide within two minutes of the restart. Aoife Kelly should have done better when Wicklow native Cassin played her in moments later, but her shot was blocked by Lawless. From the resulting corner Lawless punched towards her own goal but the ball was cleared off the line. Ciara Rossiter sent a left-footed effort that had the visiting 'keeper scrambling as Wexford's intensity continued to trouble Rovers. A Kylie Murphy header from Cassin's corner was deflected over in the 56th minute, but things had settled until Ellen Molloy's ball across the box fell to Becky Cassin on the edge of the area and the midfielder curled a lovely finish into the roof of the net. Wexford went in front in the 72nd minute when a back header in the Rovers defence only picked out Aoife Kelly lurking inside. The Carlow native slotted a composed finish past Lawless with the visitors erroneously looking around for a flag. After a sloppy second-half, the Rovers response was meek. Indeed, Wexford could have added a third in the 89th minute when Molloy cut back inside the box but was unable to beat Lawless with a weak finish. Wexford are back in league action on Saturday when they make the trip to Greenogue to face Peamount United. Then, after a week's break, they will return to Ferrycarrig Park to play their final fixture against Treaty before the All-Island Cup final against Bohemians. 'We want to get him fit' - St Mirren boss has plans for former Cork City man Dijksteel
St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson intends on gradually integrating Malik Dijksteel into his team after granting the ex-Cork City winger his debut at Parkhead on Sunday. The original plan for the Dutchman joining the Scottish Premiership club in January was fast-tracked last week following a public spat with his City manager Ger Nash. It transpired the 24-year-old had, in fact, made himself available for last Friday week's game against Sligo Rovers despite claims to the contrary from his manager. City received a small fee for brokering a deal that suited all parties and the winger was named on the bench for Sunday's league opener against Celtic. Robinson introduced his new capture late on in the game played before bumper opening day crowd of 58,814. The Buddies were three minutes away from holding Celtic until Luke McCowan's deflected winner punctured their resistance. Lisburn-born Robinson also blooded another former League of Ireland graduate at Paradise. Tunmise Sobowale was two years ago sold by his hometown club Waterford to Shrewsbury Town and via a spell at Swindon Town was recently recruited by the Saints. Killian Phillips, who made his Ireland debut in the summer friendlies, also arrived in Paisley over the summer, upgrading his loan from Crystal Palace into a permanent deal. 'We've seen an incredible piece of athleticism from Tunmise but he's not played any football,' said Robinson after the wing-back's 15-minute league bow. 'Malik was only in the building two days and I'm not sure he touched the ball after he came on. 'We want to get these boys fit to have them as options, starting with next week. There's a reserve game this week and hopefully we'll have more selection headaches for our next game against Motherwell.' Liam Scales and Adam Idah started for Celtic, with Sligo native Johnny Kenny replacing the latter with 12 minutes left. Celtic were on Monday paired against either Kazakhstan outfit Kairy Almaty or Slovan Bratislava in the playoff round of the Champions League to be played in just over a fortnight. Idah was influential in the Bhoys' run to the knockout playoffs, where they lost in February to a late Bayern Munich goal.
