Wales to face Australia in October Cardiff friendly

Yahoo4 hours ago
Wales women will play a friendly against Australia on Saturday 25 October (14:00 BST), their first match since making their major tournament debut at Euro 2025.
The game at Cardiff City Stadium will mark the beginning of preparations for 2027 World Cup qualifying which will take place from February to December 2026.
Rhian Wilkinson's side lost all three group games in Switzerland earlier this summer, but Jess Fishlock scored her country's first ever goal at a major tournament in the defeat by France.
"Making history by reaching a major tournament for the first time has been an incredible experience, and the match against Australia will be the perfect way to celebrate our history making players, but also to look ahead to the future," said Wilkinson.
"As we look to further develop ourselves against some of the top nations in the world, Australia are the perfect opponents for us.
"I hope the Red Wall, the regulars and new fans, will come out in their numbers for what will be a great occasion on a Saturday afternoon at the Cardiff City Stadium."

It remains unclear whether talismanic midfielder Fishlock, 38, will play on during qualification for the World Cup to be held in Brazil, saying after Wales' Euro exit last month: "I need to take a little seat and have a little think, but no decisions have been made."
Wales have not previously played Australia who finished fourth as hosts of the 2023 World Cup.
The Matildas are ranked 15th in the world and feature several big names including Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord who play in the WSL in England.
The autumn friendly will be live on BBC One Wales, BBC iPlayer, the BBC sport website and app, BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.
The draw for the European qualifying tournament for Brazil 2027 is scheduled to take place on 4 November 2025.

Top 5 surprise signings of the summer in Ligue 1 🥷

A comeback wind is blowing through Ligue 1. Florian Thauvin has followed in the footsteps of Paul Pogba and Olivier Giroud by signing his return to France, after four years in exile. While we wait to see what the final stretch of the summer transfer market has in store, let's take a look at the five most unexpected recruits in L1 so far. Florian Thauvin (Udinese-Lens) After a failed stint with the Tigres (Mexico) and a successful passage at Udinese (Serie A), "Flotov" is back home to discover his fifth French club. At 32 years old, the 2018 World Champion is secretly thinking of a return to the French national team? The dream is allowed. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Al-Qadsiah-OM) Against all expectations, the Gabonese arrow terminated his lucrative contract in Saudi Arabia (Al-Qasdiah) to facilitate his express return to Olympique de Marseille. This financial sacrifice did not leave the Olympian people indifferent, already won over to his cause after his memorable passage in 2023-24. Will he repeat the feat in 2025-26? Paul Pogba (free-ASM) Once is not customary, a star of the French team will make his debut in Ligue 1 at the age of 32. After going back and forth between Juventus and Manchester United, Pogba will try to regain his super form at Monaco. Two major questions remain: his real physical condition after nearly two years of inactivity and his complementarity with the midfielders already in place at Monaco. Valentin Rongier (OM-Rennes) Another member of the OM family! Rongier at Rennes, undoubtedly the most controversial transfer of the summer in Ligue 1. His status as a former star of FC Nantes and his biting comments towards SRFC did not please the Rennes Ultras at the time of his signing. Despite the contentious statements and tweets from the supporters, Rennes still managed to complete the transfer. A winning bet? Ansu Fati (Barcelona-ASM) Anssumane Fati in Ligue 1, who would have believed it? Given his salary at Barcelona, one could doubt the ability of a L1 club (except PSG) to convince Fati on a financial level. Without overthinking it, Monaco managed to find the right formula to welcome Fati and Pogba without blowing up their salary grid. Hats off to Thiago Scuro! Honorable mentions: Olivier Giroud (LAFC-Lille), Eric Dier (Bayern-ASM), Otávio (Porto-Paris FC), Saul Abdulhamid (Roma-Lens), and Youssef El-Arabi (free-Nantes). Report – €30M Rated Inter Milan Target Rejects PSG Contract Offer As Man City & Bayern Munich Keen

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has rejected a contract extension offer, with Man City and Bayern Munich keen. This according to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews. Italian international goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is under contract with Paris Saint-Germain until the end of next June. However, contract extension talks between the 26-year-old and the reigning Champions League holders haven't taken off. SportMediaset report that Donnarumma has rejected PSG's most recent offer for an extension. He is still holding out for a higher fee. Therefore, it is looking as though the Parisians face a choice: cash in on Donnarumma now, or lose him on a free transfer next summer. Furthermore, the fact that PSG are set to sign Lille keeper Lucas Chevallier is a clear sign that they are prepared for the loss of Donnarumma. The Nerazzurri have reportedly been plotting an audacious free transfer move for the Italian international should he be available next summer. However, with Donnarumma looking to be on the market, the interest is growing among Europe's heavy-hitters in signing the 26-year-old this summer. SportMediaset report that Manchester City are ready to offer around €25-30 million to sign Donnarumma. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are also keen on the former AC Milan keeper.

England Lionesses' Jess Carter says social media platforms ‘need to do better' after facing racial abuse online

England Lioness and Gotham FC defender Jess Carter said social media companies can do more to police hate comments online after she faced racial abuse during the Euro 2025 tournament. Carter, a defender for the American soccer team Gotham FC, is part of the England women's national team, nicknamed the "Lionesses," that just secured a historic win in the Euro 2025 championships after defeating Spain on penalties in the final in Switzerland in July. Carter had to take a step back from social media after facing intense racial abuse during the tournament and in an interview with CNBC's Tania Bryer, she shared how she's dealing with the online attacks. "I'm not someone who normally takes myself off social media, because I'm used to the critics and used to getting some of the abuse that we get as athletes and people in the public eye, as it happens a lot," Carter told Bryer. "So this time around, I think the way that I dealt with it was just to completely take myself off social media so that I wasn't able to see anything that was said and I could just focus on what was being said within my camp," she added. The England women's team came out in support of Carter after the abuse and decided not to take the knee — an anti-racism gesture — before the Euro 2025 matches, saying it is "clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism." Carter said that online abuse can be overlooked, whereas if it were happening on the street, it would be treated as a hate crime. "I think social media companies need to do better at protecting people in the public eye. I think that the amount of abuse that we get, not even just me, but that everyone in the public eye gets, is extraordinary, and it's not okay," she said. "The social media platforms can do better to recognize those people that are sharing the abuse and prosecute them the way that they should be if this was in the street." She lauded tech giant Meta for monitoring her social media and blocking hate messages sooner, but said it needs to be addressed more efficiently. "More needs to be done in the beginning to prevent that from happening." Carter advised those who are dealing with abuse on social media to lean on family and friends and to speak up. "Part of me wishes I spoke up about it earlier. It started right from the beginning of the France game, because after I had spoken up about it, I maybe didn't realize that I did need the support. I thought 'I'll just handle this by myself. It'll be fine.' "Then actually after speaking up about it, having the support from my team and my family, and friends really helped get me through it," Carter told Bryer. "I didn't realize I needed support at the time, and speaking up about it helped get me through and not make me feel so isolated." Carter said the support and positivity from fans was instrumental in getting her through the rest of the tournament. On inclusivity in sports, Carter pointed out that she is a believer in equal access to opportunities and didn't know much about women's football growing up. "In fact, I didn't know anything about women's football. I didn't know I could be a professional footballer until I joined for Birmingham at 16, and so I think about making it more accessible for everybody, regardless of where you're from," she added.
