England Lionesses' Jess Carter says social media platforms ‘need to do better' after facing racial abuse online

CNBC7 hours ago
England Lioness and Gotham FC defender Jess Carter said social media companies can do more to police hate comments online after she faced racial abuse during the Euro 2025 tournament.
Carter, a defender for the American soccer team Gotham FC, is part of the England women's national team, nicknamed the "Lionesses," that just secured a historic win in the Euro 2025 championships after defeating Spain on penalties in the final in Switzerland in July.
Carter had to take a step back from social media after facing intense racial abuse during the tournament and in an interview with CNBC's Tania Bryer, she shared how she's dealing with the online attacks.
"I'm not someone who normally takes myself off social media, because I'm used to the critics and used to getting some of the abuse that we get as athletes and people in the public eye, as it happens a lot," Carter told Bryer.
"So this time around, I think the way that I dealt with it was just to completely take myself off social media so that I wasn't able to see anything that was said and I could just focus on what was being said within my camp," she added.
The England women's team came out in support of Carter after the abuse and decided not to take the knee — an anti-racism gesture — before the Euro 2025 matches, saying it is "clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism."
Carter said that online abuse can be overlooked, whereas if it were happening on the street, it would be treated as a hate crime.
"I think social media companies need to do better at protecting people in the public eye. I think that the amount of abuse that we get, not even just me, but that everyone in the public eye gets, is extraordinary, and it's not okay," she said.
"The social media platforms can do better to recognize those people that are sharing the abuse and prosecute them the way that they should be if this was in the street."
She lauded tech giant Meta for monitoring her social media and blocking hate messages sooner, but said it needs to be addressed more efficiently. "More needs to be done in the beginning to prevent that from happening."
Carter advised those who are dealing with abuse on social media to lean on family and friends and to speak up.
"Part of me wishes I spoke up about it earlier. It started right from the beginning of the France game, because after I had spoken up about it, I maybe didn't realize that I did need the support. I thought 'I'll just handle this by myself. It'll be fine.'
"Then actually after speaking up about it, having the support from my team and my family, and friends really helped get me through it," Carter told Bryer. "I didn't realize I needed support at the time, and speaking up about it helped get me through and not make me feel so isolated."
Carter said the support and positivity from fans was instrumental in getting her through the rest of the tournament.
On inclusivity in sports, Carter pointed out that she is a believer in equal access to opportunities and didn't know much about women's football growing up.
"In fact, I didn't know anything about women's football. I didn't know I could be a professional footballer until I joined for Birmingham at 16, and so I think about making it more accessible for everybody, regardless of where you're from," she added.

Delay means YNW Melly will have been in jail for 8 years without being convicted

Rapper YNW Melly's double-murder retrial — marked by years of delays after his first trial ended in a hung jury in 2023 — will now begin in January 2027. The announcement came on Friday after the Fourth District Court of Appeals granted a delay that prosecutors were seeking. Broward Circuit Court Judge Martin Fein had ruled that the trial would start in September. 'We're disappointed that today's hearing was yet another win for the State of Florida, allowing more time to subject my client to inhumane treatment,' said Raven Liberty, Melly's attorney. 'Every American should be concerned about this abuse of the justice system and basic Constitutional rights at the hands of Broward State's Attorney Harold Pryor and his team of prosecutors.' Melly, 26, whose real name is Jamell Demons, is accused of murdering his childhood friends Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr. in a drive-by shooting in October 2018. Williams and Thomas, both aspiring rappers with the YNW collective, were known as YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy. Melly has spent the last six and a half years in prison. During that time, his first trial ended in a hung jury in July 2023. He and his legal team have requested a bond to be released from jail while awaiting the retrial, but have been repeatedly denied. The new trial date would mean he would have been jailed for eight years without being convicted. 'If this denial of basic Constitutional rights was not outrageous enough, most of this time has been spent in solitary confinement in conditions worse than death row,' Liberty said. He seeks release Melly's mistrial set off a whirlwind that ended with a prosecutor ousted, key evidence thrown out and new charges. A major cause of the delays is the evidence removed from the retrial by then-Broward Circuit Court Judge John Murphy. Prosecutors appealed Murphy's ruling. The bulk of the contested evidence was extracted from Melly's cellphone, email addresses and social-media accounts. Under Murphy's ruling, most of the admitted digital evidence, including messages, will be confined to the day of and following the murders. But the attorneys now have oral arguments on the evidence issue before the appeals court on Sept. 16.

Saudi Arabian PIF plans to open three new courses, with one LIV golfer involved in design

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund – best known by its acronym PIF and the owner/operator of LIV Golf – has announced plans to build three new golf courses over the next three years in the desert country. One LIV golfer, a former U.S. Open champion, will be involved in the design of one of the courses. There are a handful of golf courses in Saudi Arabia now, and the PIF said in a press release to announce the three new courses that the country plans to triple its total courses in the next few years. The first of the three new courses will be Shura Links on Shura Island alongside the Red Sea. The release said that American-based Curley-Wagner Design signed on to lay out the course, which will play to a par of 72 at 7,601 yards. That course is slated to open in September of 2025. Trojena Northern Golf Course will be the second of the new three courses. Located in the Sarwat Mountains, this mountain-top course will be laid out by McDowell & Dusenberry Design, which includes Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, currently a LIV golfer and winner of the 2010 U.S. Open. An opening date has not been announced. The third of the new three layouts will be Laheq Golf Course near the Red Sea. Curley-Wagner design also will lay out this course, with an estimated opening in 2028. Plans for all three courses will be shown as part of a PIF Future Fairways display at the PIF Championship on the LET Tour at Centurion Club in London on Aug. 8-10, at the Aramco Houston Championship as part of the PIF Global Series on Sept. 5-7, and at the Aramco Shenzhen Championship at Mission Hills in China on Nov. 6-8. The display will include 3D mapping and simulators.

Leagues Cup: Messi, Miami Get Liga MX's Tigres; Will It Be An All-MLS Final?

Leagues Cup Leagues Cup: Messi, Miami Get Liga MX's Tigres; Will It Be An All-MLS Final? Published Aug. 8, 2025 4:58 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link The 2025 Leagues Cup field has now been whittled down to just eight teams — with four each from MLS and Liga MX left standing. We'll get to those quarterfinal matchups, but let's assess the tournament so far. Liga MX Giants Bow Out; Messi, Miami Remain The revamped format – fewer MLS participants, inter-league-only contests until at least the first knockout round – improved the product on the field. It still wasn't enough to prevent MLS clubs from continuing to get the better of their Mexican counterparts in a competition staged entirely on American and Canadian soil, though. (Liga MX squads have failed to reach the final in each of the last two editions.) Coming on the heels of FIFA's U.S.-hosted, 63-match Club World Cup and played at the same time as the Premier League's stateside "Summer Series" in many of the same cities, fan turnout has reflected this market over-saturation. Phase One of the competition drew just 16,631 fans on average, well below MLS's 2025 regular season average of 21,747. Just 5,709 watched already-eliminated San Diego FC beat Mazatlán — another team with no chance to advance — at SnapDragon Stadium on Tuesday. ADVERTISEMENT With just four of 18 clubs from each league making the quarterfinal cut, the final first-round match was rendered meaningless for too many fan bases. Club América, Chivas, and Monterrey all went three games and out. Same on the MLS side of the ledger, with defending champ Columbus Crew going home early despite amassing seven points from its three first-round games. Last year's runner-up LAFC and Supporters Shield-chasing FC Cincinnati are similarly gone from trophy contention before the business end of the tournament has even begun. Plenty of star power remains, however. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami is there, with the Herons hoping Messi is healthy for his side's meeting with perennial Liga MX powerhouse Tigres in Fort Lauderdale on Aug 19 or 20. The Seattle Sounders, like Inter Miami also a Club World Cup entrant, are there, too. So are last year's MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy, plus Toluca, Pachuca and Puebla from south of the border. The single-elimination quarterfinals are as follows, with exact dates and kickoff times to be announced soon. Quarterfinal Preview Inter Miami vs. Tigres UANL Messi's two assists led the Herons past Atlas in the opener, but the Argentine legend limped out of Miami's second Leagues Cup encounter with a leg injury. Javier Mascherano's team won anyway, despite playing most of the match with 10 men. Miami then came from behind to beat Pumas 3-1, with new signing Rodrigo De Paul running the show in the GOAT's place as Inter clinched a quarterfinal berth. It's the second time this summer that they've advanced to the knockout stage of a major international club tourney, having been eliminated from the Club World Cup by eventual finalists Paris Saint-Germain just five weeks ago. (Miami also reached the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup back in April.) Miami will face a formidable opponent in Tigres, the winners of six Mexican titles since 2011. Los Auriazules are led by longtime Atlético Madrid forward Angel Correa, Messi and De Paul's World Cup-winning teammate in 2022. With four goals in three games so far, Correa leads the Leagues Cup in scoring. Lionel Messi sat out Inter Miami's game on Wednesday due to a minor leg injury, but is expected to be back for the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. (Photo by) Seattle Sounders vs. Puebla The Sounders were the only team in the entire 36-deep field to win all three of its league stage games during regular time, without penalties. Seattle's 7-0 trouncing of reigning Concacaf Champions Cruz Azul was the eye-popper, but the Rave Green also handled Santos Laguna and Tijuana without much trouble. Despite its success in Leagues Cup, Puebla is beatable, too: Los Camoteros finished 17th out of 18 Liga MX teams last season, and they've lost two of three games so far in this one. LA Galaxy vs. Pachuca If you go by their current position in each team's respective domestic circuit, the Galaxy are in big trouble. Pachuca sits atop the Liga MX table three games into the Apertura season, while the MLS Cup holders remain dead last among MLS's 30 franchises, having won just three times in 24 tries in 2025. None of that matters in the Leagues Cup, though. With the playoffs a pipe dream, this is the Galaxy's season now. They've already matched their MLS win total by beating both Tijuana and Santos Laguna by four goals and topping Cruz Azul in a shootout. Now, America's most decorated club is just three more wins away from adding another piece of silverware to its collection. Marco Reus and the LA Galaxy may be dead last in the actual MLS standings, but they're still in the hunt in Leagues Cup play. (Photo by Liza Rosales/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images) Orlando City vs. Toluca As impressive as Óscar Pareja's Lions have been so far, they'll surely get their sternest test yet against Toluca. The Red Devils outlasted Club América to claim Liga MX's Clausura title in May, and they've won two of three games to kick off the new Apertura campaign. Toluca beat CF Montreal and NYCFC in regulation and the Crew in a penalty-kick tiebreaker to secure the top seed on Liga MX's side of the bracket.
