Afternoon showers, some lightning possible for Space Coast on Memorial Day
A series of storms that pummeled Palm Bay with hail and brought down a tree over the weekend may be followed on Memorial Day by more rough weather, meteorologists said.
The next round of strong storms and scattered showers could hit between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Memorial Day. "The main focus of the storms will be on the interior," said Tim Sedlock of the National Weather Service in Melbourne. Temperatures are expected to hover in the mid-80s with partly sunny skies.
'We're starting to get some more coverage of rain out there,' he said.
While the forecast for Memorial Day calls for thunderstorms, Sedlock said the hope is that the rains will continue to bring the moisture needed to combat the spread of any fires caused by lightning.
On May 24, storms moved into the Palm Bay area, pelting cars, lawns and rooftops in the neighborhoods off Malabar and Palm Bay roads with half-dollar-sized hail. High winds that knocked over a tree along Grandeur Street in the southeast section of the city were likely caused by a microburst, not a tornado, weather officials said.
More strong thunderstorm cells rolled through the area after 1:30 p.m. May 25.

More sunshine Sunday Dry start of the week Warming up by Wednesday We've held on to mostly clear skies overnight leaving temperatures in the lower 60s and even upper 50s to start out this morning. Sunday will start sunny, end rainy and windy
Sunday will start off sunny but end rainy and windy. The wind will pull down wildfire smoke from the northwest, placing Minnesota under an air quality alert until 11 p.m. Overnight showers give way to sunshine, but more clouds and spotty showers will drop in Sunday evening. Behind Sunday morning's cold front, expect temps to be a little cooler, but still comfy in the low 70s. Winds will be blustery this afternoon with gusts up to 30 miles per hour. The northwest flow will pull more wildfire smoke across the area and will briefly impact air quality. Some showers will linger into Monday, and will help make for our coolest day of the week with highs only in the 60s. This unsettled pattern looks to break by Tuesday with high pressure building at the surface and aloft. The Action News Jax First Alert Weather Team is tracking a warm and humid day, with feels-like temperatures rising into the 100s this afternoon. Notes from the meteorologist: This morning's temperatures are near 80 degrees under partly cloudy skies. High temperatures will reach the mid-90s today with maximum feels-like temperatures of 102- 106°F. No heat alerts are in effect (that begins at 108F). The first half of the day will remain dry with spotty coverage of showers and an isolated storm developing by the early-middle afternoon.
