Four rescued from burning boat off Cape Canaveral

CAPE CANAVERAL — Four people trapped on a burning boat Saturday afternoon off Cape Canaveral escaped injury after the U.S. Coast Guard and a Good Samaritan carried out a rescue. The incident happened about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, about a mile offshore of the Brevard County coastline, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. All four passengers aboard the sailboat, who were not identified, were taken aboard a passing boat and then brought to shore by Brevard County Sheriff's Office crews. It was not immediately known what started the fire or where the passengers were from, the Coast Guard said. Black smoke from the burning ship billowed into the afternoon skies as a Coast Guard rescue boat from Port Canaveral and the sheriff's office responded to the site. The incident is being reviewed by the U.S. Coast Guard. No further information was immediately available. J.D. Gallop is a criminal justice/breaking news reporter at FLORIDA TODAY. Afternoon showers, some lightning possible for Space Coast on Memorial Day

A series of storms that pummeled Palm Bay with hail and brought down a tree over the weekend may be followed on Memorial Day by more rough weather, meteorologists said. The next round of strong storms and scattered showers could hit between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Memorial Day. "The main focus of the storms will be on the interior," said Tim Sedlock of the National Weather Service in Melbourne. Temperatures are expected to hover in the mid-80s with partly sunny skies. 'We're starting to get some more coverage of rain out there,' he said. While the forecast for Memorial Day calls for thunderstorms, Sedlock said the hope is that the rains will continue to bring the moisture needed to combat the spread of any fires caused by lightning. On May 24, storms moved into the Palm Bay area, pelting cars, lawns and rooftops in the neighborhoods off Malabar and Palm Bay roads with half-dollar-sized hail. High winds that knocked over a tree along Grandeur Street in the southeast section of the city were likely caused by a microburst, not a tornado, weather officials said. More strong thunderstorm cells rolled through the area after 1:30 p.m. May 25. J.D. Gallop is a criminal justice/breaking news reporter at FLORIDA TODAY. Police search for gunman on black ATV after shots fired in south Melbourne neighborhood

Police are searching for a gunman on a black ATV who fired off several rounds in a south Melbourne neighborhood on May 8, prompting a precautionary shelter-in-place alert at Stone Magnet Middle School. There were no immediate reports of any injuries or arrests. "It's an active investigation; we believe it was between an ATV and a vehicle," said Sgt. Ben Slover, spokesperson for the Melbourne Police Department. The incident was reported about 12:30 p.m. near a group of apartments near Lipscomb Street and University Boulevard. Officers searched the neighborhood, and requested a drone to assist with locating the ATV. An investigation is ongoing. J.D. Gallop is a criminal justice/breaking news reporter at FLORIDA TODAY.
