I got my boyfriend a job at my work — then he dumped me

'Three years ago I started dating a guy who was desperate for a job, so I helped him out and got him a job at my office,' Sophie said down the phone. 'We were working together and living together, but no one knew – then, he broke up with me. Twice.' The 25-year-old lives in Lisbon and realised that helping her partner out had really backfired. 'The second time we broke up, it was for good. Now I'm navigating a situation where we are no longer dating but we're still colleagues a year later. It's terrible,' she added. I tried to hide the shock on my face, as Sophie told her story. She was spilling her dilemma on the latest episode of Just Between Us, Metro's hot new sex and relationships podcast. But my co-host Diana Vickers and I struggled to keep a straight face as she explained that his reason for breaking up with her was wanting a fresh start; new job, new city, new girlfriend. 'He told me he needed to find himself and he wasn't happy in his corporate job or routine, so I expected him to leave the job and move to the other side of the world, but no, the only thing he changed about his life was breaking up with me,' Sophie said. X Factor icon Diana Vickers and Metro's dating expert Alice Giddings dive into your wildest sex, love, and dating dilemmas – every Tuesday. Listen wherever you get your podcasts or watch on YouTube. And be sure to follow and subscribe so you never miss an episode. You can also join the fun on our WhatsApp Group Chat here – share your dilemmas and Diana and Alice may just give you a call. Oh, and he dumped her on holiday – both times. While breaking up with someone isn't a crime – you'd think that you'd try and do it when you aren't stuck in a hotel room together. Sophie actually has a new boyfriend now, but she's struggling with being haunted by her ex every day as she sends Outlook calendar invites, so she came to us for advice. She's wondering how to truly find her peace after the relationship and how she can work through her last frustrations from how badly he handled the breakup. Now, her dilemma isn't surprising, given that 44% of people know a co-worker who has had an affair at work, and that a fifth of marriages or civil partnerships start in the office – but that doesn't make it any easier when it doesn't work out. It's tricky, because Sophie doesn't have the luxury of the delete and block method where you avoid seeing or hearing from them IRL or on social media. So, step number one, which is a tip from dating coach Matthew Hussey I picked up, is to change your ex's name on any forms of communication you have to have on your phone to something that reminds you you've moved on. A woman who Matthew coached changed her ex's name in her phone to 'Done', so whenever he popped up, it reinforced they were over and done with. It may sound petty and small, but trust me, it works a treat. It gives you that satisfaction of knowing that chapter is finished with. Sophie also questioned if she should tell any colleagues they have had a relationship and how badly it ended. 'Part of me, after my third Aperol Spritz at corporate drinks, really wants to let it out' she said. It was a firm no from me. She's done so brilliantly at keeping it professional up until now and it would likely give him more satisfaction knowing you're still thinking about him. Not to mention, from a HR perspective it could get pretty contentious, and she loves her job, so it's not worth letting him jeopardise that. Instead, Sophie can take comfort in knowing that yes, she can't escape him, but he can't escape her either and he'll likely be watching as she's moving on with her new handsome beau (who thankfully doesn't work at the company) – that's penalty enough, surely. She gushed about her new partner who she's still in the honeymoon phase with, saying: 'My new guy is a bit older than me and he's treating me like I was never treated before – I feel loved in a way I can't even describe.' More Trending Now that's some good karma there for you. Since he's such a catch, Diana and I suggested another petty but satisfying way to show you've moved on. 'You could get your handsome man to come and pick you for lunch,' I said. It's simple but effective – close that chapter once and for all. But Sophie's dilemma isn't the only tea on the latest Just Between Us episode – Diana and I talk all things heartbreak, why it's not a 'you' problem when your ex shows up for someone in ways they never did for you, and whether we've ever crossed lines in the workplace. As Australia's teen social media ban looms, here's how the platforms are lobbying for an exemption

The Australian government will imminently announce which social media platforms will be included in the under-16s ban. The social services minister, Tanya Plibersek, on Monday said the government would not be 'bullied out of taking action by any social media giant'. But the tech companies are doing their best to argue that their services should be exempt from the legislation that comes into effect in December. Here's what the social media companies are doing to make their case. The parent company of Facebook and Instagram has been showcasing its teen account settings for Instagram as a not-so-subtle message to the government that it takes teen safety on its platform seriously. Last week, Meta announced new protections around direct messages, including blocking features, in addition to the existing protections around automatically censoring potentially nude images. Meta also hosted a 'screen smart' Instagram safety event for 'parent creators' in Sydney last week, hosted by Carrie Bickmore. Sign up: AU Breaking News email YouTube has been even less subtle. The platform was originally promised an exemption from the social media ban last year by then communications minister Michelle Rowland. The eSafety commissioner, however, last month recommended to the government that YouTube not be excluded, highlighting research showing when children encounter harmful material, it is on YouTube more than any other platform. Since then, the company has been in a lobbying blitz. In addition to full-page ads in newspapers and billboards across the country saying YouTube is in a 'category of one' of services for everyone, the company has sent a letter to the communications minister, Anika Wells, raising the threat of a high court challenge should YouTube be included in the ban. As Guardian Australia reported last month, Google this week will host its annual showcase in Parliament House on Wednesday, where content creators such as the Mik Maks – children's musicians who have argued against YouTube being included in the ban – will make an appearance and no doubt make their views known to the politicians. Last year's event featured the Wiggles, who met with Rowland. The meeting was mentioned in a letter the global CEO of YouTube, Neal Mohan, sent to Rowland last year pleading for an exemption less than 48 hours before the exemption was promised. Guardian Australia reported last week YouTube had also met with Wells this month to discuss the ban directly. This month TikTok has been running ads both on TikTok itself and on Meta's platforms about the educational benefits for teens on the vertical video platform. Sign up to Breaking News Australia Get the most important news as it breaks after newsletter promotion '1.7m #fishtok videos are helping them swap screen time for time outdoors,' one ad stated, in a nod to the government's claim that the ban will lead to children spending more time off their screens and outside. 'They're mastering their chef skills thanks to over 13m cooking videos,' it added. 'One in three are visiting the stem feed every week, inspiring their learning,' another stated. On the messaging app Snapchat, much of the focus has been on user safety. Guardian Australia reported in May that an 11-year-old Australian girl, who added random people on Snapchat as part of an informal competition with her best friend to get a high score in the app, went on to be sexually abused by one of the people she added. This month, Snap announced it had partnered with with the Australian federal police-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation for a series of educational videos rolled out on several Australian influencer accounts, as well as ads advising parents and teens how to spot grooming and sextortion. 'The safety of the Snapchat community has always been our priority, and working closely with law enforcement and expert safety partners is a critical part of that ongoing effort,' Ryan Ferguson, Snap's Australian managing director, said. The company also reiterated its teen account settings for 13 to 17-year-olds that include private accounts by default and in-chat warnings when communicating with someone with whom they don't share mutual friends or who is not in their contact list. So far, the government appears to be not for turning. 'There is no doubt that young people are being impacted adversely in their mental health by some of the engagement with social media and that is why the government has acted,' the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, told ABC's Insiders on Sunday. 'I'll be meeting with parents again this week of people who've been through tragedy, frankly … And one of the things that concerns some of the social media companies is that we are leading the world and I'm proud that we're prepared to stand these people up effectively from their threats.'

Inside Celtic hero's bizarre feud with James Buckley as Inbetweeners star declares ‘we're at WAR'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JAMES BUCKLEY and Joe Hart are anything but football friends. The Inbetweeners star, who played Jay Cartwright in the popular English comedy series, has revealed he has declared WAR on the Celtic hero - for damaging his podcast set. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 4 James Buckley wasn't impressed with Joe Hart 4 He and his Scottish wife Claire demanded an apology from the football star 4 He eventually apologised on social media after weeks of asking 4 But he couldn't resist another cheeky pop Buckley, 37, is now making a name for himself away from acting and in the world of YouTube and podcasting with his Scottish wife Claire. Two podcasts they have started together include In Sickness and in Health, and At Home With The Buckleys. And in their most recent episode of the latter, the pair took aim at Hart for his antics while filming his own podcast Footballers Unfiltered - in the same studio as the Buckleys. They now share a set down south and have locked horns in recent weeks over the retired goalkeeper's escapades. Back in May the couple jokingly slammed the former Celtic stopper for 'wrecking' their set while filming his own show. Since then they have both continuously aimed digs at Hart for the incident on various episodes, demanding an apology for the damage. And this week, Hart finally delivered. Taking to social media, he posted a video saying sorry for the damage he caused but couldn't resist a parting shot in the clip - as he BOOTED a stuffed teddy of Jay from the Inbetweeners. And that was the last straw for the actor turned podcaster as he took aim at the retired goalie - albeit tongue in cheek - with a message in their latest show. Addressing the video of Hart, he said: "We're at war by the way. Now we share a studio space with the goalkeeper Joe Hart. BBC Sport pundit shows off shock new look with fans convinced he has had hair transplant "Is he still playing?" Claire then chimed in and had the podcast crew in hysterics with her comment, saying: "Surely not. Not at that age!" James continued: "He did break our set a little bit. We called him out on it and he sent us a little video - I think it's an apology video. "It's supposed to be an apology video and he picks up our little Jay doll there and boots it across the room very hard and very aggressively. "I just thought 'let's go' and I'll tell you something Joe Hart, if you kicked like that when you were at Man City then Pep (Guardiola) might not have dropped you. "War has been declared and we will keep you updated. "We're going to brainstorm and put some thought and money into this." "Maybe just as a joke we arrange someone to tie him up and throw him into the back of a van or something like as a joke."
