Chasing 350, England made 270/7 in 63 overs to deny India's bid for a win that would have given them a 1-0 lead.
England U19 captain Hamza Shaikh led from the front with a fighting century as the hosts held India U19 to a tense draw in the first Youth Test on Tuesday.
Chasing a challenging target of 350, England finished on 270/7 in 63 overs, frustrating the visitors' bid for a win that would have given them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Shaikh was the cornerstone of England's resistance, scoring a composed 112 off 140 balls with 11 fours and two sixes.
He received vital support from Ben Mayes, who scored a steady 51 off 82 balls (3x4s), and wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew, who contributed a brisk 50 off just 35 balls (8x4s).
India seemed poised to force a result after reducing England to 62/3 in the 14th over, but the hosts fought back through Shaikh's partnerships with Mayes and Rew.
With an hour left on the final day, India sparked hope by executing two run outs in consecutive overs — first removing the prized wicket of Shaikh and then dismissing Ekansh Singh in the next over.
However, Ralphie Albert (9 not out off 37 balls) and Jack Home (7 not out off 36 balls) displayed commendable composure under immense pressure as India launched an all-out attack.
Close-in fielders crowded the batters with two slips, a silly point, and a short leg forming a tight cordon, but the English pair held their nerves to survive the final overs and secure a hard-fought draw for the hosts.
Earlier, India U19 resumed their second innings on 128 for three and posted 248 in 57.4 overs, setting England a daunting target.
Vihaan Malhotra top-scored with a gritty 63 off 85 balls, hitting 10 fours.
He and overnight partner Abhigyan Kundu looked settled before Alex Green (2/67) struck twice in quick succession, removing both while Rahul Kumar (11) also got out cheaply as India slipped from 171/3 to 187/6.
With the visitors in danger of a collapse, RS Ambrish played a crucial knock of 53 off 71 balls, adding valuable runs with the tail.
He was the last man to depart, run out as India folded for 248.
India U19, led by Ayush Mhatre, had earlier claimed the five-match Youth ODI series 3-2.

'Jassi Bhai, Mai 5 Wicket Leke Kisko Hug Karu?': Siraj's Emotional Goodbye To Bumrah

Last Updated: Mohammed Siraj has revealed asking Jasprit Bumrah to stay back despite being released from the squad, telling him that he'd want to hug the senior pacer after picking a fifer. Mohammed Siraj has dropped another proof of his eternal love and admiration for senior pace bowling partner Jasprit Bumrah. Siraj revealed that when Bumrah was leaving the squad in the lead-up to the game, the Hyderabadi asked him to stop, saying who he would hug after a five-wicket haul if not his Jassi bhai. Bumrah, having been rested from the final Test of the series, was released from the squad on July 31. Siraj didn't take a fifer in the first innings but picked up a brilliant four-wicket haul, helping India bowl England out for 247 and keep their first lead to a gettable 23 runs. 'Jassi bhai ko ye bola tha, bhaiya aap ja kyu rahe ho? Mai 5 wicket leke aake kisko hug karu? Toh unhone bola mai hu idhar hi, tu bas 5 wicket lele. (I asked Jassi, brother, why are you going? Who'll I come to hug when I take a five-wicket haul? He just said, 'I am here, you go and take five wickets')" Siraj revealed in a video on the after the day's play. In the same video, Prasidh Krishna, who also took four wickets in the innings to step up in Bumrah's absence, spoke about the fast-bowling group. 'Booms has been a great, great part of this. I think it's really important for us to enjoy each other. When you are on the field, you are speaking to each other and have that trust. That trust is only going to make the team better," Prasidh said. The BCCI's medical team had decided that it was only safe for Bumrah to play three Tests in the series to maintain his long-term fitness. He featured in the first, third, and fourth games. 'I and Siraj, we have been playing a lot for five years now. I played with him a lot in the IPL as well. We sit together a lot, spend a lot of time together. Same with Akash Deep. I think the fast-bowling unit is looking pretty good," Prasidh added. The visitors scored 75/2 in reply, taking a 52-run lead to Stumps. Any target of over 250 would be their aim, though it won't be easy on the quick green pitch at the Oval. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'I asked Jassi bhai, why are you going?': Mohammed Siraj reveals exchange with Jasprit Bumrah after India star released

Team India produced a brilliant comeback on Day 2 of the second Test despite being put in a spot of bother after a poor opening session on Friday. The side was bowled out for 224 after Karun Nair's 57 helped India cross the 200-run mark late on the opening day. However, the English opening pair of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley continued in their explosive form in the recent games, smashing the Indian bowlers around the park to reach 92 in just 12.5 overs. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah during the third Test match between India and England(PTI) Zak Crawley's dismissal cracked open the door, but it was Ben Duckett's fall, followed by an animated send-off from Akash Deep, that truly lit a fire in the Indian attack. What followed was a charged session of hostility and intent. A tense verbal exchange between Joe Root and Prasidh Krishna only escalated the mood, and England, rattled by the shift in tone, failed to consolidate their early dominance. From 129/1, the hosts were dismantled by the fired-up Indian bowling attack, as they were bowled out for 247. Leading the assault at The Oval were Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh, sharing eight wickets between them (four each). While Prasidh made the opening breakthrough with the wicket of Crawley, Siraj then tore through the middle-order with crucial wickets of stand-in captain Ollie Pope, Joe Root, and Harry Brook, all of whom had been in impressive form going into the fifth and final Test. Siraj was the leader of the pack in the conventional sense, too, as he was the most experienced of the pace attack at the Oval in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. While Bumrah was rested as part of the team's workload management, the BCCI informed on Friday that the pacer was released from the squad, too. Siraj, following the end of the day's play, revealed a playful chat he had with Bumrah. 'I asked Jassi bhai, 'Why are you going? Who will I hug when I take five wickets?' He said, 'I'm here, you take your five wickets!'' Siraj told BCCI. Siraj shares a strong off-field bond with Jasprit Bumrah and has never shied away from expressing his admiration for India's pace spearhead. Time and again, he has publicly acknowledged Bumrah's influence, both as a leader and as a benchmark for excellence in the fast-bowling group. Prasidh on the camaraderie Prasidh Krishna also acknowledged Jasprit Bumrah's role from the sidelines, stating that the off-the-field rapport essentially built the trust factor in matches. Prasidh had also spent significant time with Bumrah when both were undergoing rehab at the NCA in 2023. 'Booms (Bumrah) has been a great part of this. I think it's really important for us to enjoy each other's success, to have that rapport off the field, so when you're on the field, speaking to each other, you have that trust. Only that is going to make the team better,' said Prasidh.

Marcus Trescothick slams Akash Deep's ‘strange' send-off to Ben Duckett: ‘No need to walk him off like that'

The fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 between England and India at the Oval in London is turning out to be a battle of attrition with players of both sides fighting it out both on and off the field. With multiple instances of verbal altercations between Indian players and their English counterparts, the Test is set for a thrilling finish. The major talking point of Day 2 play was Indian pacer Akash Deep. The right-arm fast bowler punched the air after getting England opener Ben Duckett caught behind before putting his arm around the batter's shoulder and walking a few steps with him, giving a send-off. It was Duckett's comments, 'you can't get me out', to Akash Deep which prompted this send-off from the Indian bowler. England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick has criticised Akash Deep for his actions and said, 'There is no need to walk him off in that fashion. Your job is done at that point. I don't think I've ever seen a bowler do that after getting someone out. It was strange really,' said Trescothick as quoted by Sky Sports. Trescothick made some animated gestures in the dressing room, and explaining that, he said, 'We were chatting on the balcony. Many in my time would have just dropped the elbow on him or something quite different. I was just laughing and joking about it.' Duckett was at the centre of another incident where he was involved in enraging Sai Sudharsan following his dismissal in India's second innings. The other incident was between Joe Root and Prasidh Krishna, where the duo exchanged words during England's first innings. Speaking on Root animated chat, Trescothick said: 'I think they made a comment didn't they? He (Krishna) tried to get after him and spark him up a little bit. Joe's normally the kind of guy who laughs and giggles and allows things to happen, but today he chose a different route. Today Joe bit back.'
