BBC News4 days ago
Singer Mariah Carey has thanked fans and said she would always be there for them in her headline performance at Brighton's Pride on the Park. The five-times Grammy winner, who has sold more than 220 million albums worldwide, performed in Preston Park in the city on Saturday night, following performances by Loreen and Confidence Man.By performing on Saturday night, Carey fulfilled a promise made to fans and Pride's organisers in 2020.She had been booked to headline that year, but Covid-19 kicked in and the event was cancelled, leaving many "gutted".
During the performance, Carey donned four outfits as she performed some of her hits to a crowd of approximately 50,000 fans. The first two were blue pink and white/silver - a nod to the colours of the transgender pride flag. She also wore a jacket with the phrase "Protect the Dolls" emblazoned on the back. She dedicated her song Hero to the LGBTQ+ community, saying it had been there for her for so long, supporting her through good and bad and that she would always be there for them. What followed was the Park singing along to the classic song in unison. From the scene, BBC Radio Sussex reporter Anthony Martin said some fans had dressed up in Christmas attire hoping to hear one certain song by Mariah - but this one was not on the set list.
Loreen, who won the Eurovision singing competition for Sweden in 2012 and 2023, was second billing on the show reel for the first night. She performed her two Eurovision winning songs, in Euphoria and Tattoo - before telling the crowd she "loved them". The second session of the Pride on the Park gig takes place on Sunday, with performances from Brighton's own Fatboy Slim, the Sugababes and Will Young.

EastEnders reveals first look at two major returns as funeral is confirmed

EastEnders has officially confirmed former stars Max Bowen and Ricky Champ will reprise their soap roles in the same storyline later this year. The actors will head back to the show as Ben Mitchell and Stuart Highway, albeit for a brief period. While the full details of their returning storyline haven't been revealed, we now know that they will head back to Walford later this Autumn for the funeral of Jonno, the father of Stuart and Callum Highway (Tony Clay). The two characters will be back alongside Callum and also Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff). With Callum having recently cheated with Johnny, and with those feelings expected to grow, Ben may not be revisiting the happy family he left behind. Ben will be on day release from prison in America, while Stuart will only visit due to having a life away from Albert Square with Rainie (Tanya Franks). You'd think that things would be all smooth sailing given it will only be a temporary return, but an awful lot can happen in a short amount of time where Walford is concerned. Max and Ricky are currently filming, and will appear in a handful of episodes later this year. Ben departed life in Albert Square in 2024. He was arrested for fraud and sent to prison in the USA. It came shortly after the death of Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold), the mother of Ben's daughter Lexi (Isabella Brown). Ben went to prison because he was arrested for stealing someone's credit card, and making a number of purchases while exploring treatment options for Lola – who had a brain tumour – in the States. Ben and Callum vowed to make their relationship work while he was behind bars, but things have gotten somewhat complicated. Callum and Johnny shared a surprise kiss during the Pride event at The Albert, which effectively ended Johnny's romance with recently departed Felix Baker (Matthew James Morrison). The guilt didn't stop Callum going back for more, but their secret affair was soon uncovered by Ben's furious father Phil (Steve McFadden), who violently attacked Johnny. Since then, the pair have cooled things off, with Callum insisting he is committed to waiting for Ben. Despite this, they've not really been able to keep their hands off each other. Stuart got his happy ending with Rainie in 2022. The two characters departed to start life again elsewhere. When Stuart was introduced in 2018, he often expressed his violent and dark side. The character revealed that he had been sexually abused as a child, explaining why he would often hunt down paedophiles and have them arrested. Stuart was also seen terrorising the Carter family. One storyline in particular saw him shoot himself in the leg, but framed Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) so he could go to prison. In a two-hander episode, Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) pretended to get close to Stuart, just so she could get him to admit that Mick never shot him. When Mick was released, he tried to scare Stuart out of Walford, but he went to live with Dot Branning (June Brown). Shortly after this and the death of Dot's friend Doctor Legg, Stuart tried to rebuild his life. This eventually led to him starting a relationship with Rainie but this had many ups and downs as well, as Stuart faced a cancer diagnosis, as well as battled male PND. Richard Graham portrayed Stuart and Callum's father Jonno for a short period in 2019. He was first introduced to us when Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), Callum's fiancé at the time, contacted him. It was then revealed that Jonno wasn't a good father to Callum and Stuart as they grew up, and that he would often subject Stuart to violence. At the time, he tried to tell his sons that he was a changed man, but his true colours were revealed when he had a fight with Ben after making it clear he was homophobic, and then pinned Callum up against a wall. Jonno was thrown out of Walford but returned two months later, curious as to how Callum's wedding went, unaware that it never happened. Callum came out as gay to his dad, and a disgusted Jonno accused Ben of turning his son 'into one of them'. More Trending Jonno was punched by Phil after this, and he threatened to go to the police. The punters in the Queen Vic, including Whitney, all decided to deny seeing Phil attack Jonno. He then left, disowning Callum as he departed. Alan Sheehan says Swansea plan to build on buzz of Snoop Dogg becoming co-owner

Alan Sheehan has described the 'buzz' since Snoop Dogg became a Swansea co-owner and explained how the Championship club plan to build on the feel-good factor. The 53-year-old American rapper joined a growing list of celebrity investors in British football last month by becoming part of a Swansea ownership group that already included Croatia midfield great Luka Modric. Multi award-winning Snoop said Swansea's 'underdog' story 'really struck a chord with me' and his vast following on social media – 89 million on Instagram and 20.5 million on X – quickly learned about the Welsh club and his love for Joe's ice cream in the city. 'To have Snoop and Luka on board is a massive benefit,' Swansea boss Sheehan said ahead of Saturday's league opener at Middlesbrough. 'There is a buzz, obviously. As a football club you have to become more appealing commercially, to be more competitive, and appeal to the wider nation. 'It's different to how it was maybe when I was a player, but I understand why, and I totally welcome it. 'Rome wasn't built in a day, but there are big plans for the football club. 'It's about building strong foundations and building that character and resilience within the football club.' Comparisons with Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are unavoidable and already being made. The two Welsh clubs are Championship rivals this season after Wrexham became the first team in the top five tiers of English football to win three successive promotions. A docu-series tracking life at Swansea, on similar lines to the award-winning FX show 'Welcome to Wrexham', is understood to be already in the pipeline. Asked if Swansea – who were relegated in 2018 after seven seasons in the Premier League – were the 'new' Wrexham, Sheehan said: 'No, we're Swansea. We're not new anything. 'Now they're in our division, I suppose, it becomes more there now (rivalry), but we don't play them until December. So I won't really be speaking about them until December.' Modric – who joined the board in April following a takeover led by American businessmen Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen six months earlier – was unveiled as an AC Milan player on Monday after his trophy-littered 13-year spell at Real Madrid ended this summer. The 39-year-old has played his part in Sheehan's summer recruitment strategy, actively persuading players to join the Welsh club. 'Obviously, his transfer situation… he was unavailable to come here,' smiled Sheehan. 'We've had a few text messages and he's involved. 'Luka has spoke to some players, passed on his knowledge, what he knows about the football club, and the plans that we have for it. 'Snoop and Luka are very invested in the club. They care, they speak through the ownership and the ownership are very good to us.' So will Grammy-nominated Snoop soon be swapping California for Swansea to watch a game? 'I believe so,' said Sheehan. 'But I'm not sure which game yet. It would be very naive and narrow-minded to think two very successful people in what they do could not help us. 'Successful people have a lot in common – a work ethic, a grit, a determination to get where they want to get to. So with Snoop, Luka and the ownership there is a lot of positivity around the football club.'
