The much-anticipated action sequel War 2 roared into cinemas worldwide on August 14, raking in nearly ₹ 165 crore gross at the global box office in its opening two days.
Backed by Yash Raj Films, the film opened to a substantial ₹ 84 crore gross on its first day, with day two collections holding steady in a similar range.
While the Hindi version witnessed a noticeable jump in business, particularly in metropolitan centres, the Telugu version experienced a slight drop — a trend industry analysts describe as typical following high initial turnout from regional fans.
The film also features prominent performances from Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor, and Ashutosh Rana in key supporting roles, adding depth to the Ayan Mukerji film.
Trade experts say the film's performance over the weekend will be critical. The opening numbers have been impressive so far, but with a budget reportedly exceeding ₹ 300 crore, the film will need to maintain momentum throughout the week to move into safe territory.
Yash Raj Films, which has been building its ambitious shared cinematic universe, is counting on War 2 to be its next major tentpole following the success of Pathaan and Tiger 3. With positive word-of-mouth spreading on social media and strong bookings for the weekend, industry observers remain cautiously optimistic.

Actor Shwetha Menon has broken the glass ceiling in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) after being elected as its first woman president. Since its inception in 1994, the actors' body in the Malayalam film industry never had a woman as its president or general secretary. The 51-year-old defeated senior actor Devan to clinch the lead post in a keen electoral race held on August 15. She has a trusted lieutenant in actor Kukku Parameswaran, who was elected as the first woman general secretary of the association. The election to the 17-member executive committee was necessitated after the previous committee led by its president and actor Mohanlal stepped down on August 27, 2024, following the release of the Hema Committee report on the problems faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. The committee was disbanded as allegations of sexual abuse and misbehaviour were raised against its members, including the office-bearers. Born in Chandigarh as the daughter of an Indian Air Force official, Shwetha entered the tinsel town in 1991 after she was paired opposite actor Mammootty in the movie Anaswaram. She shot into national fame after she won the Femina Miss India Asia Pacific title in 1994 and became the Gladrags female supermodel in the same year. She sizzled in ad films and walked the ramp with elan before trying her luck in Bollywood in 1997 through the movie Ishq. Some of her Hindi movies included Asoka, Maqbool and Corporate. Her performance as Cheeru in director Ranjith's Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha won her the Kerala State Film Award for the Best Actress in 2009. She repeated her stellar performance in 2011 and won the best actress in the Kerala Film Award for her portrayal of Maya, a dubbing artiste and foodie, in Aashiq Abu's Salt N' Pepper. She has worked in over 100 movies in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, besides hosting various TV shows. She has had her share of controversies in her over three-decade-old career. However, she did not remain mute after the Hema panel report was published while asserting that she had also faced illegal bans. She resigned from the Internal Complaints Committee of the association, along with actors Maala Parvathi and Kukku Parameswaran in 2022 following the reluctance of then leadership to take action against actor-producer Vijay Babu in a case registered by the Kochi city police on charges of alleged rape of a young woman actor and revealing the identity of the survivor. Just a week before the election, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against her by the Kochi city police under Section 67 A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, on a complaint lodged by a native of Ernakulam 'for making financial gains through her roles in movies having alleged vulgar and obscene content'. Speculations were rife that the complaint was allegedly aided by her detractors from within the association. The actor heaved a sigh of relief after the Kerala High Court stayed the proceedings in connection with the FIR. Despite the scenes of jubilation over the election of women in lead roles in the association, the way forward may not be a cakewalk for her in view of the internal rift and mud-slinging witnessed ahead of the election. The fissures within the organisation seem deep and will require her to pull out all the stops to stay afloat.

Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth had yet another excellent day at the India box office, grossing Rs 47-48 crore. These are excellent numbers but the trend is slightly worrisome. The movie opened to collections of Rs 75.50 crore, added Rs 63.50 crore on day 2 (Independence Day holiday) and is likely putting up Rs 47.50 crore on day 3, taking the 3 day cume to Rs 186.50 crore. Going by how it is doing, the Sunday collections are going to drop down to around Rs 40 crore, giving the movie a weekend of a little over Rs 225 crore. The Day Wise India Gross Collections Of Coolie Are As Under Day India Gross Collections 1 Rs 75.50 crore 2 Rs 63.50 crore 3 Rs 47.50 crore Total Rs 186.50 crore Coolie's Rs 47.50 Crore Day 3 Is Excellent But Given How It Started, The Numbers Should Have Been Closer To Rs 60 Crore If the Saturday numbers of Coolie are seen, not taking into consideration the fact that it opened to the numbers it did, they are excellent and not many Tamil movies have really been able to manage it. The collections for the Tamil version of Coolie are on a steep fall. It is the Hindi and Telugu version collections that are sustaining to a degree. After Sunday, it is likely that the drops will be significant even for the Hindi and Telugu version. Regardless, the movie has already punched above its weight for these two versions. The underperformance in the home market will end up being the most talked thing about this Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial. If the trend is to be analysed, it will end up doing lower than what Ajith Kumar's Good Bad Ugly did in Tamil Nadu. Coolie Heads For A Rs 500 Crore Range Worldwide Finish Unless Something Surprising Happens Coolie heads for a near Rs 500 crore global finish, but even that is subject to how it holds. The global weekend of Coolie will be around Rs 375 crore and for it to add less than Rs 125 crore after that will not be seen well. All things said, Coolie will still be among the top 5 highest Kollywood grosser worldwide and that just proves how big Rajinikanth continues to be.
