Coolie Day 3 India Box Office Estimates: Rajinikanth crime-drama looks to do an excellent Rs 48 crore gross on 1st Saturday BUT...

Pink Villa2 days ago
Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth had yet another excellent day at the India box office, grossing Rs 47-48 crore. These are excellent numbers but the trend is slightly worrisome. The movie opened to collections of Rs 75.50 crore, added Rs 63.50 crore on day 2 (Independence Day holiday) and is likely putting up Rs 47.50 crore on day 3, taking the 3 day cume to Rs 186.50 crore. Going by how it is doing, the Sunday collections are going to drop down to around Rs 40 crore, giving the movie a weekend of a little over Rs 225 crore.
The Day Wise India Gross Collections Of Coolie Are As Under
Day India Gross Collections
1 Rs 75.50 crore
2 Rs 63.50 crore
3 Rs 47.50 crore
Total Rs 186.50 crore
Coolie's Rs 47.50 Crore Day 3 Is Excellent But Given How It Started, The Numbers Should Have Been Closer To Rs 60 Crore
If the Saturday numbers of Coolie are seen, not taking into consideration the fact that it opened to the numbers it did, they are excellent and not many Tamil movies have really been able to manage it. The collections for the Tamil version of Coolie are on a steep fall. It is the Hindi and Telugu version collections that are sustaining to a degree. After Sunday, it is likely that the drops will be significant even for the Hindi and Telugu version. Regardless, the movie has already punched above its weight for these two versions. The underperformance in the home market will end up being the most talked thing about this Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial. If the trend is to be analysed, it will end up doing lower than what Ajith Kumar's Good Bad Ugly did in Tamil Nadu.
Coolie Heads For A Rs 500 Crore Range Worldwide Finish Unless Something Surprising Happens
Coolie heads for a near Rs 500 crore global finish, but even that is subject to how it holds. The global weekend of Coolie will be around Rs 375 crore and for it to add less than Rs 125 crore after that will not be seen well. All things said, Coolie will still be among the top 5 highest Kollywood grosser worldwide and that just proves how big Rajinikanth continues to be. He will have 3 films in the top 5 list and what's important to note is that it is with 3 different directors.
Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.

'Don't Cast Amitabh Bachchan': Sholay Director Was WARNED Of Big B's Flops At Seeta Aur Geeta Jubilee Bash

As Sholay marks 50 years, Ramesh Sippy reflects on casting Amitabh Bachchan, whose performance became a key part of the film's legendary success. This month marks 50 years since the release of Sholay, the 1975 film that became a milestone in Hindi cinema. While the movie is celebrated for its action, unforgettable dialogues, and iconic characters, one cannot overlook Amitabh Bachchan, who played the calm and composed Jai in the legendary Jai-Veeru duo. Before Sholay, Bachchan had yet to make a mark at the box office. Many industry insiders even warned director Ramesh Sippy against casting him. 'When we were celebrating the jubilee of Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) with a party at home, a lot of people came there. They were whispering and advising me not to take him because he had a row of flops before that. They said, 'Don't make that mistake, young man! Don't do it,'" Sippy recalled. Despite the warnings, Sippy felt Amitabh was the right choice. 'There was something about him that he felt right. There were a couple of good films in those that didn't work. In Anand (1971), Rajesh Khanna's role was far more expressive, and he (Bachchan) was the quiet man. But I don't think it would've worked if either of them hadn't worked. It's because he worked as the silent man that the other character got to take off," said Sippy. Sippy also praised Amitabh's versatility. Recalling Bombay To Goa (1972), he said, 'Being such a huge guy, you could still see how his body movement was so free. He was so overpowering you might not remember the song, but you remember him because of the way he moved around, there was no awkwardness. There should've been because he could feel it. But he had to blend himself, look right, and have the rhythm while singing away." Javed Akhtar also noticed Amitabh's talent during his comic action sequences. 'So when I saw these two contrasting characters and films, I felt here's a person who has the potential. Now, I already had so many accomplished stars… So let me take a chance with one, and it paid off," Sippy added. By the time Sholay released, Amitabh had already found commercial success with hits like Zanjeer (1973) and Deewaar (1975). Yet his understated performance as Jai proved that subtlety could shine, leaving an indelible mark on Hindi cinema history. Sholay (1975) tells the story of two friends, Jai and Veeru, who are hired by a retired police officer, Thakur Baldev Singh, to catch the feared bandit Gabbar Singh. Set in the village of Ramgarh, the film mixes action, drama, and comedy, and its characters, dialogues, and songs have made it a timeless classic in Hindi cinema. Sreeleela Drops Hints About Bollywood Debut Film With Kartik Aaryan: 'I Have Played...'

While the film is yet to be officially titled, it is widely believed to be Aashiqui 3. Sreeleela has rapidly risen to become one of the biggest and most popular actresses in the film industry. In just a few years, she has managed to capture the attention of audiences with her powerful acting skills, magnetic screen presence, and mesmerising dance moves. Whether it's through her performances in chartbuster songs or her stylish appearances, she has created a strong buzz everywhere. Now, as she gears up for her much-anticipated Bollywood debut, excitement among fans is at an all-time high. In a recent interview with the Bombay Times, she expressed how she wants to carry that same authenticity into her characters, making them feel real and alive. She emphasises the importance of authenticity in her acting and says, 'I feel like the moment we start acting instead of living the character, it's not authentic anymore. Especially in Hindi cinema, the scripts I've heard are a little more real, a little more my age, very close to my character." She adds, 'In the past, I've played many characters that weren't completely like me – I tapped into different roles. But these last couple of films feel like me, like a plain me, like how I would really react. I'm excited to bring my authentic self to every screen, no matter what language." Sreeleela is gearing up for her Bollywood debut opposite Kartik Aaryan. Their fresh pairing has already created a buzz among fans. While the film is yet to be officially titled, it is widely believed to be Aashiqui 3. Earlier in February 2025, the team shared the first look of the yet-to-be-titled romantic film. The first-look video of Anurag Basu's romantic musical, shared by Kartik Aaryan, opened with a cheering crowd while the actor plays the guitar and performs on stage. He was seen singing Tu Meri Zindagi Hai, sporting a brooding lover's look with a heavy beard and rugged long hair. The video also featured a few glimpses of Sreeleela and Kartik's romantic moments, giving fans a sneak peek at the fresh pair's sizzling chemistry. Big Clash, Small Payoff: No one's a winner !

When the release dates of 's Coolie and 's War 2 were locked for the same extended weekend, trade analysts, exhibitors, and fans braced themselves for what was billed as the 'clash of the year.' The two films carried enormous weight on their shoulders: Coolie promised to be another mass masala entertainer led by the Rajinikanth himself collaborating with hit machine while War 2 was touted as Bollywood's big-ticket spy-universe spectacle headlined by Hrithik Roshan with joining him to provide the south push. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Yet, four days after their release, the numbers tell a different story. Both films have managed strong openings but are nowhere near the benchmarks their makers and fans had hoped for. The Numbers So Far In India, Coolie collected Rs 65 crore on Day 1 (Thursday), primarily driven by Tamil Nadu and Telugu markets. Day 2 dropped to Rs 54.75 crore, followed by Rs 39.5 crore on Saturday and Rs 35 crore on Sunday. That brings its four-day total to aroundRs 194.25 crore net across languages. War 2, on the other hand, opened lower with Rs 52 crore on Day 1. It managed to inch higher on Day 2 with Rs 57.35 crore, before sliding sharply to Rs 33.25 crore on Saturday andRs 31 crore (early estimates) on Sunday. Its four-day total stands atRs 173.6 crore net across languages with Hindi version contributing over Rs 125 crore. Overseas, the story isn't drastically different. In North America, Coolie minted around USD 6 million in four days, while War 2 collected USD 3 million. For two films that were marketed as pan-India and global tentpoles, these numbers, while healthy in isolation, do not reflect the earth-shattering dominance one would expect from such heavyweight titles. The real problem both films face isn't the clash , it is the content itself. Rajinikanth's Coolie was designed as a throwback to the larger-than-life masala entertainers that made him a superstar. The trailers promised punch dialogues, exaggerated action, and whistle-worthy swagger. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The first day's collections indicated that fans turned out in droves. But as the weekend wore on, the word of mouth began to dip. Audiences complained about a weak screenplay, recycled tropes, and lack of emotional depth. Rajinikanth's charisma remained intact, but the film offered little beyond his screen presence. Younger audiences, especially in metros, found the film dated, while family audiences felt the emotional core was missing. On the other hand, War 2 had the baggage of carrying forward the Spy Universe after Pathaan and Tiger. Expectations were sky-high, especially with Hrithik Roshan reprising his role and NTR Jr joining as the antagonist. The fans called out the film for its flimsy writing, incoherent arcs, not up to the mark VFX and a predictable storyline. The problem here wasn't the lack of spectacle but the absence of a gripping emotional anchor. The film felt like a series of set pieces stitched together rather than a cohesive narrative. When two big-ticket films release on the same day, cannibalization is inevitable. Screens get divided, shows overlap, and audiences—especially in multiplexes—are forced to choose one over the other. In this case, Coolie dominated the South Indian markets, while War 2 enjoyed better traction in North India. The Burden of Expectation Both films also became victims of their own hype. Coolie was marketed as Rajinikanth's grand return after the super success of JailerThe teaser broke records, the songs trended across social media, and fan clubs went all out with promotions. But when the film delivered more of the same old formula, audiences felt shortchanged. War 2, meanwhile, was positioned as a chapter in India's first 'spy universe.' The inclusion of NTR Jr was supposed to attract Southern audiences, while Hrithik's return was meant to fuel nationwide frenzy. However, the film's writing simply didn't match the monumental expectations it carried. Mixed Word of Mouth Another critical factor has been the mixed word of mouth. Coolie has strong appeal among Rajinikanth loyalists, ensuring single-screen crowds remain energetic, but urban audiences are lukewarm. War 2 is attracting footfalls for its action spectacle, but its inconsistent pacing is putting off repeat viewership. The Road Ahead For Coolie, the hope lies in South Indian markets, where Rajinikanth's pull remains unmatched. The film may stabilize at lower levels but still post healthy lifetime numbers due to fan loyalty. For War 2, the Hindi belt will be crucial. If word of mouth steadies and the weekday drops aren't too steep, the film can still salvage its run, though crossing Rs 300 crore net in India a figure once expected now looks improbable despite having no new films releasing till 29th August. In the end, the much-hyped Coolie vs War 2 clash has proven to be a lose-lose situation. Instead of creating fireworks at the box office, the battle has highlighted the fragility of films that lean too heavily on hype and star power while neglecting storytelling. Both Rajinikanth and Hrithik Roshan remain massive crowd-pullers, and both films will recover costs thanks to pre-sales, digital, and satellite deals. But in terms of theatrical impact, neither will go down as the historic blockbuster their makers envisioned. Sometimes, two giants colliding doesn't create a spectacle; it simply leaves both bruised.
