Fed's Schmid: uncomfortable with looking through tariff-driven price push

June 5 (Reuters) - Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank President Jeff Schmid on Thursday expressed concern that tariffs could rekindle inflation, saying upward price pressure could be apparent in coming months but not fully known for much longer. The comments show Schmid is likely inclined to hold the Fed policy rate steady not just at its upcoming June 17-18 meeting as is widely expected but for some time after that as well, to make sure that inflation, which is now near the Fed's 2% goal, doesn't get out of hand. "While theory might suggest that monetary policy should look through a one-time increase in prices, I would be uncomfortable staking the Fed's reputation and credibility on theory," Schmid said in remarks prepared for delivery to a banking conference hosted at his regional Fed bank's headquarters. At the same time, he said, he's "optimistic" about the economy's momentum, despite widespread belief that tariffs will slow growth and weaken the labor market. "While the tariffs are likely to push up prices, the extent of the increase is not certain, and likely will not be fully apparent for some time," Schmid said. "Likewise, the extent of the drag on growth and employment is also unclear." In response, he said, the Fed will "need to remain nimble" to balance its twin objectives of price stability and full employment.

Lloyds and Halifax major service change for all customers

In a move that will affect all people who bank with Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland, customers will no longer be able to deposit cheques at the Post Office using pay-in slips. Previously, customers with Lloyds Banking Group could pay in cheques using a personalised paying-in slip and a deposit envelope. Now, this service is no longer available. If you need help setting up your direct debit, pop in to your nearest branch offering vehicle tax services. We're here to help! Lloyds Banking Group said it has stopped the service as very few customers pay in cheques at the Post Office. A spokesperson said: "Most customers use our app as the easiest way to pay in a cheque, by taking a photo on their phone and letting us take care of the rest." You can deposit a cheque through the Mobile Banking app, using the 'Deposit cheque' feature and then using your camera to scan the front and the back of the cheque. Customers are advised to keep hold of the cheque until the funds have been paid in. You can also cash in your cheques in branch. However, some banking experts have raised concerns that ending the service could majorly impact some customers. Recommended reading: Consumer rights advocate Martyn James said that the ability to deposit cheques is still a "vital lifeline" for some bank customers. He explained: "With millions of cheques still issued each year, and older people relying on them far more than other age groups, this group stands to lose the most from these changes." The Lloyds Bank website explains: "You can pay in up to £2,995 a month and up to £20,000 a year. If you have a joint account, you can both pay in up to £2,995 a month and £20,000 per year."
