Chennai Grand Masters 2025: Vincent Keymer remains tournament leader; Arjun Erigaisi one point behind
German GM Vincent Keymer maintained his tournament lead at the Chennai Grand Masters 2025 after drawing his Round 5 match against GM Vidit Gujrathi on Monday.
Arjun Erigaisi stayed one point behind Keymer after also drawing his game against fellow Indian Pranav V.
The tournament's excitement builds as Keymer and Erigaisi are set to face each other on day 6, with Keymer playing with white pieces.
The Chennai Grand Masters 2025, now in its third year, stands as India's premier classical chess tournament. The event features two 10-player round-robin sections - Masters and Challengers - with nine rounds played over ten days.
The tournament offers a prize pool of Rs 1 Crore, with the Masters winner receiving Rs 25 Lakhs and the Challengers champion earning Rs 7 Lakhs plus entry to the 2026 Masters section.
The Masters winner also gains 24.5 FIDE Circuit points toward 2026 Candidates qualification.
In other Masters matches, Jorden van Foreest secured the day's only victory by defeating American GM Ray Robson, bringing both players to 2.0 points. Nihal Sarin drew with Awonder Liang, while Anish Giri and Murali Karthikeyan also shared points.
The Challengers section saw black pieces dominate the top boards. Leader GM Abhimanyu Puranik defeated GM Harika Dronavalli to extend his lead by a full point.

If I could change one thing in the IPL, I would change the rule of releasing players every three years," Samson had told Star Sports before last IPL season. After being released by Royals, Buttler entered the IPL 2025 mega auction and he was signed for Rs 15.75 crore by Gujarat Titans. In IPL 2025, Buttler played 14 matches for the Shubman Gill-led side and scored 538 runs. RR want Jadeja or Gaikwad Royals are ready to trade Samson ahead of IPL 2026 auction and according to a report the inaugural edition winners have written to multiple franchises to enquire about their interest in signing Samson. After resolving an internal dispute, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is now aiming to regain the Olympic Solidarity grant, which the International Olympic Committee (IOC) withheld last year due to infighting within the national sports body. On October 8 last year, the IOC's Executive Board halted the grant intended for athlete development programs following a contentious IOA meeting on September 26, 2024, during which 12 Executive Council members declined to approve the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as the organization's CEO. With the situation now under control, IOA President PT Usha is optimistic that the IOC will soon release the grant. A Special General Body Meeting (SGM) and an Executive Council meeting were successfully held on Wednesday after a truce was reached on July 24 between Usha and the majority of the dissenting EC members. We have made significant progress and will meet again," Usha told PTI during the IOA SGM convened to endorse India's bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. 'The Olympic Solidarity grant amounts to Rs 15 crore. We will receive it." Kothari completes full marathon at 90 degree north pole
At 90° North, where every direction is south and the Arctic Ocean lies frozen beneath, the Indian tricolour was raised — not on a pole, but in the hands of a man running into history. On July 13, 2025, Kolkata-born entrepreneur Ram Gopal Kothari became the first Indian to finish a full marathon at the Geographic North Pole, joining a select group of athletes to conquer one of the planet's harshest racecourses. The North Pole Marathon takes place on drifting sea ice over water three metres deep, under –8°C temperatures, biting winds, and occasional polar bear sightings. In 2025, Kothari — in his debut full marathon — ran alongside participants from around the world. The journey began in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, aboard the French icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot, navigating to 90°N through solid ice, spotting polar bears, walruses, and blue whales along the way. Kothari crossed the halfway mark in 2 hours 45 minutes, but from kilometre 28, melting snow turned to slush, soaking his shoes and causing severe cramps. 'I had every reason to stop,' he said.
