Thug Life box office collection day 1 early estimate: Kamal Haasan film unlikely to surpass Indian 2's first day numbers

Thug Life box office collection day 1 early estimate: Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's latest collaboration Thug Life finally hit theatres on Thursday. Even after opening to poor reviews from critics and the audience, the film is off to a decent start at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Thug Life has collected Rs. 13.25 crore in India, as of 9 pm on Thursday. Due to the negative response, the action-drama is unlikely to even surpass opening numbers (Rs 26 crore) of Haasan's Indian 2, which was a disaster at the box office. According to Sacnilk, Thug Life recorded an overall Tamil-language occupancy of 48.72% on Thursday. Morning shows saw 50.66% occupancy, afternoon shows registered 50.35%, and evening shows dipped to 45.15%. Pondicherry reported the highest occupancy so far at 69.33%. The Mani Ratnam film is unlikely to rank in the biggest Tamil openers list of this year. Ajith Kumar's Good Bad Ugly is the biggest Tamil opener of 2025 with Rs. 28.15 crore. The second spot belongs to Vidaamuyarchi at Rs. 25.5 crore, followed by Suriya's Retro at Rs. 17.25 crore. ALSO READ | Thug Life Review: Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam's 'game of thrones' is a cinematic endurance test Besides the poor reviews, Thug Life may also have been affected by the ban in Karnataka. The controversy around its ban originated after a statement made by Kamal Haasan during a promotional event. While addressing the audience, he had said, 'Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil.' The actor's remark offended many Kannadigas and led to strong reactions from several pro-Kannada groups. Haasan refused to apologise for his statement, which sparked a huge row, leading to the ban of the movie. An excerpt from SCREEN's Thug Life review read, 'Mani Ratnam has delivered what is arguably his weakest film to date, the Kamal Haasan-starrer Thug Life. Worse still, the only way one could even identify it as a Mani Ratnam film is the grandiosity of its visuals and the occasional brilliance of its long shots. If not for these, Thug Life would have felt like an unending gangster drama, crafted by an overambitious filmmaker (anyone, really) whose only asset was ambition and nothing more.' Directed by Mani Ratnam and produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies, Thug Life also features Trisha Krishnan, T.R. Silambarasan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and Mahesh Manjrekar in pivotal roles.

Housefull 5 advance booking: Akshay Kumar comedy sells tickets worth Rs 9.84 crore, breaks Kesari's record

Housefull 5 Advance Booking: The much-anticipated comedy franchise Housefull is returning to the big screen with its fifth installment, Housefull 5, releasing this Friday, June 6, 2025. The film has been generating significant buzz thanks to its entertaining trailer, the catchy track 'Laal Paari,' and a unique twist — two alternate versions of the movie, each with a different ending. According to early data from trade tracker Sacnilk, Housefull 5 is off to a promising start at the box office. The film has recorded an advance booking collection of approximately Rs 9.84 crore, including block bookings. Without considering block seats, the film's advance earnings stand at around ₹4.54 crore, surpassing the opening advance figures of Akshay Kumar's previous film, Kesari. The film is being released in two versions, Housefull A and Housefull B. Version A has sold about 98,874 tickets in advance, while Version B has moved around 48,109 tickets so far. A higher number of screens have been allotted to Version A, likely contributing to its stronger sales. Region-wise, Maharashtra leads in advance bookings, contributing Rs 1.1 crore (excluding block bookings), followed closely by Delhi, which has raked in Rs 92.88 lakh. Despite a strong start, trade experts note that the advance figures are slightly below expectations. The film faces tough competition from Kamal Haasan's Thug Life, which released on Thursday and has already amassed around Rs 14 crore in advance sales. As a result, opening day projections for Housefull 5 have been revised downwards to Rs 18–20 crore net, depending on how well it performs with spot bookings on Friday. This marks a noticeable dip from earlier forecasts, which were based on the franchise's historic success. The film's immediate box office benchmark is to surpass the India net total of Housefull 4, which earned ₹205.5 crore. Also Read | Housefull 5 Box Office Collection Prediction: Will the latest Housefull movie end Akshay Kumar's streak of duds? Film projected to earn Rs 200 crore Lead actor Akshay Kumar has had a mixed box office run in recent years, with several underperformers such as Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Khel Khel Mein, Sarfira, Singham Again, and Sky Force in 2025. However, his last franchise outing, Kesari 2, was a hit. Industry insiders remain optimistic, predicting Housefull 5 could cross the Rs 200 crore mark if it gains positive word of mouth. Housefull 5 is reportedly one of the costliest comedy films in the Hindi film industry, mounted on a massive budget of Rs 225 crore. The film features an ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Dino Morea, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Chitrangada Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Soundarya Sharma, Chunky Pandey, Nikitin Dheer, and Johnny Lever. With its star-studded line-up, dual endings, and franchise appeal, all eyes are on Housefull 5 as it aims to bring back the box office glory for both Akshay Kumar and the comedy genre.
