Morocco and Zambia 2-2 Draw in WAFCON 2025 Opening Match

Morocco Worlda day ago
Rabat – The 2025 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) kicked off tonight at the Rabat Olympic Stadium with a match between Morocco and Zambia that ended in a 2-2 draw.
Zambia's Barbara Banda scored the first goal for her team in the first minute.
Morocco soon responded in the 12th minute through a penalty, but Kundananji scored a second goal for Zambia in the 27th minute.
Both sides celebrate flashes of strength and discipline. However, many criticized the slow defense of the Moroccan women's team, noting that the worst scenario a coach can face is conceding a goal in the opening seconds of the game.
Ghizlan Chebbak created balance in the game after her stunning performance and equalizer in the last minutes before the end of the match.
Morocco, the host country, is entering the tournament with ambitions after finishing as runners-up in the 2022 tournament.
In that final, they lost narrowly to South Africa 2-1, but their impressive performance secured them a spot in the 2023 Women's World Cup. It also earned them respect on the continent and nationally.
Zambia is committed to do its best throughout the competition, having finished third in 2022 after a hard-fought win over Nigeria in the bronze medal match.
This year marks their fourth appearance in WAFCON. Tags: WAFCONWAFCON futsal

The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, emphasized on Saturday in Salé that the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2024), currently taking place in Morocco, will be the most memorable edition of the tournament to date. «This edition will undoubtedly be the most successful and memorable of all. I express my deep gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, as well as to the Moroccan people for their unwavering support for the development of African football», Motsepe stated during a press conference at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maâmora, a suburb of Salé, following a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee. After thanking the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) for hosting the committee's proceedings, the South African official praised the participation of African clubs in the Club World Cup, namely Wydad Casablanca, Espérance de Tunis, Egypt's Al Ahly, and South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns. Vilda: Morocco's Draw Against Zambia ‘Is a Good Result'

Morocco's women's national team opened their 2024 WAFCON campaign with a 2-2 draw against Zambia on Saturday. After the final whistle, Morocco coach Jorge Vilda took a moment to thank his players, crediting them for standing their ground against what he described as 'a solid team.' He pointed to the squad's second-half performance as a turning point, noting their ability to raise the tempo and respond under pressure. 'They kept a good rhythm, especially in the second half, in a match played at high intensity,' he said. 'The substitutions helped us get back into it and draw level. This team will improve with every match.' Vilda showed no disappointment in the result. On the contrary, he called the draw a positive outcome. 'A draw remains a good result,' he said, 'and we'll aim for a win in the matches to come.' The coach showed respect for the Zambian side, calling them 'a strong team with great players.' He admitted that opening games often carry a different weight but said Morocco showed it could play solid football against tough opposition. Across the field, Zambia coach Nora Häuptle reflected on the match as a tough battle that left room for improvement. 'We had several chances,' she said, 'but we should have managed our strong spells better.' Häuptle gave credit to Morocco's second-half dominance, noting that their control of the ball helped shift the momentum. 'The Moroccan players were very good,' she said. 'They controlled possession in the second half, which allowed them to equalize.' Despite the late comeback, Häuptle expressed satisfaction with her team's overall showing. 'We played against a good team. They had strong players who took the upper hand late in the game,' she said. 'We'll need to adjust a few things to approach the next matches more calmly.' Hamdallah Out of Al-Hilal After Shortest Loan Spell

Saudi club Al-Hilal have reportedly reached an agreement to end Moroccan striker Abderrazak Hamdallah's loan deal just days after announcing his signing. According to Saudi outlet Arriyadiyah, the club and Hamdallah mutually agreed to part ways less than a week into the six-month deal. The striker had joined from Al-Shabab ahead of Al-Hilal's Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Brazil's Fluminense. Hamdallah, 34, came on as a substitute in that match and played only 25 minutes, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for Al-Hilal. The short-term contract included a clause allowing either party to end the agreement at any time. Reports suggest he will now join Al Shabab's pre-season training camp ahead of the new Saudi Pro League season. Al Hilal are said to have appreciated Hamdallah's willingness to join at short notice and are keen to end the contract amicably to avoid any financial disputes. Manager Simone Inzaghi reportedly did not see the Moroccan forward as part of his long-term plans and opted to exclude him from preparations for the Saudi Super Cup in August.
