‘Cong will never come to power, let them daydream…': Nitesh Rane's fiery response to Priyank Kharge's ‘ban RSS' remark

Mint10 hours ago
Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane on Thursday slammed Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge over his recent statement to ban the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stating that Congress is never going to come to power.
'Congress is never going to come into power, let them daydream,' Rane said.
Congress leader Priyank Kharge on Tuesday slammed the RSS over their General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's statement demanding reconsideration of the terms 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution.
Alleging that the RSS wants to "alter" the Indian Constitution, Kharge said that these are the same people who "staged a protest when the constituent assembly debates were going on and burned the Constitution".
On being asked if Congress is thinking of banning the RSS, Kharge said, 'We will see. It's not the first time they have been banned, right? Didn't Sardar Patel ban them? Then they went and fell at his feet. They pleaded no, no, we will follow the law of the land. After that, Indira Gandhiji banned it again. They went and said No, we will cooperate. We will abide by the laws of the land. There cannot be one law of the land for the rest of the country and for one organisation like this...'
According to an ANI report, earlier on Thursday, addressing a program on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale remarked that during the Emergency, terms like "Socialism" and "Secularism" were forcibly inserted into the Constitution, a move that needs to be reconsidered today.
Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Mahesh Tenginkai hit back at Kharge as well, stating that the Congress does not even deserve to sit in the "opposition" and that Kharge should think before making such a statement.
The BJP MLA stated that his party will remain in power for the next 20 years and that no attention will be given to Priyank Kharge's statement.
"Priyank Kharge should think once. BJP is PM Narendra Modi's party, which will stay in power for 20 more years. Your party (Congress) will not be in power. It doesn't even deserve to be in opposition...There is no need to give more attention to his statement", the BJP MLA told ANI.
The Karnataka unit of the BJP slammed Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge through a message posted on X. Stating that Kalaburagi, which has been "ruled" by Kharge for more than 50 years, remains one of the most "underdeveloped" parts of Karnataka.
"Priyank Kharge, a minister only because of his father's influence, is now threatening bans like it's 1975 all over again. The Congress's alleged "President/High Command" Mallikarjun Kharge ruled the Kalaburagi region for half a century. Yet it remains one of the most underdeveloped parts of Karnataka", the post said.

Telangana Jagruthi Prez Kavitha urges AICC chief to pressurise Centre on 42 per cent BC reservation

Hyderabad, July 3 (UNI) Telangana Jagruthi president and BRS MLC K Kavitha today urged AICC President Mallikarjuna Kharge to pressurise the Union government to approve 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in education, employment and local bodies. Kavitha, who met BC leader and Rajya Sabha MP R Krishnaiah earlier, said that the Congress government could issue an order to implement the 42 percent reservations for BCs. Although a bill was passed in the assembly, the central government needs to approve it, she said and demanded that the state government conduct elections to local bodies with 42 per cent BC reservations. Krishnaiah assured Kavitha of his support for the Jagruti Rail Roko on July 17. Kavitha, the daughter of BRS chief and former CM Rao (KCR) had earlier also urged the newly appointed BJP Telangana president N Ramchander Rao, asking him to take up the issue as a priority. Talking to reporters after releasing posters for Telangana Jagruthi's proposed rail roko on July 17, Kavitha said that Kharge's Telangana visit was incomplete without addressing the long-pending BC reservation issue. She claimed that neither Kharge nor Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, or Priyanka Gandhi had ever raised the issue of BC rights in Parliament. She also demanded that the state should immediately release the caste census data collected at the gram panchayat level, instead of conducting local body elections based on outdated data. Telangana Jagruthi, in collaboration with the United Phule Front, will intensify its agitation in the coming days, she added. UNI KNR SSP

Contractual employees are entitled to maternity leave, reiterates Orissa High Court

Rejecting a writ appeal of the State government, a Division Bench of Orissa High Court recently upheld a three-year-old judgment passed by a single judge Bench, which had ordered that maternity leave and associated benefits could not be denied to women employed by the State government on contractual basis. In August 2022, the Orissa High Court had ruled in favour of a contractual employee of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, whose maternity leave application from August 17, 2016, to February 12, 2017 had been rejected by the department. The State government appealed against the decision of the single-judge Bench. Since the employee was governed by the terms of her contract, she was not entitled to maternity benefit, the State government maintained Also Read | Maternity benefits: Differentiation not permissible between regular, contractual employees: Calcutta HC The Bench said that the Supreme Court and several other High Courts in the country had passed judgments saying contractual employees were entitled to maternity leave based on the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. Rejecting the contention of the State government that only women civil servants were entitled to avail maternity leave, the Bench said 'women employees, for the purpose of availing such benefit, do constitute one homogenous class, and their artificial bifurcation founded on status of appointment falls foul of Article 14 of the Constitution'. Declining any further indulgence, the Division Bench of Justices Dixit Krishna Shripad and Mruganka Sekhar Sahoo broadly agreed with the reasoning of the single judge Bench that maternity leave with pay or comparable social benefits were to be assured by the state through policies and programmes as India is a signatory nation to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. 'These conventions highlight the social significance of 'maternity', and the role of both parents in the family structure and in the upbringing of children. It is said that God could not be everywhere and, therefore, he created mothers. The idea of maternity leave is structured on 'zero separation' between the lactating mother and the breast-feeding baby,' the High Court said, adding that child psychiatrists and obstetricians were of the considered opinion that the physical companionship of mother and baby is mutually advantageous, and promotes bonding between the two, which is essential for their well-being. 'A lactating mother has a fundamental right to breastfeed her baby during its formative years. Similarly, baby has a fundamental right to be breastfed and brought about in a reasonably good condition. These two important rights form an amalgam from which the State's obligation to provide maternity benefits, such as paid leave to the employees, within the permissible resources, would arise,' the Orissa High Court said.
