His rapid rise to superstardom coincided with his breakout role as moody Washington Post journalist Kevin Dolenz in classic coming-of-age film St Elmo's Fire.

Now 62, the actor is still considered one of the greatest young stars of all time with Pretty in Pink and Weekend at Bernie's also among his credits.
And while he might be a little more mature in appearance, Andrew McCarthy's charm still shines through in a new snap with his daughter Willow, 18, ahead of her prom.
He couldn't help but joke about one of his famous films, quipping, "she did not wear pink".
Willow, who is from Andrew's second marriage to writer Dolores Rice, made her dad beam with pride as they posed for the sweet snap.
Though the father and daughter duo are close, she has no interest in watching the films that made her dad a star.
Speaking to The Times last year, Andrew said, "Some of her friends told her to watch Pretty in Pink. But she saw a trailer and said, 'I don't want to watch you kissing some other person.' I think that's a perfectly appropriate response.'
Andrew and Dolores also have a son called Rowan, 11, while the actor has a son called Sam, 23, from his first marriage to college sweetheart Carol Schneider.
Back in 2013, he gushed about fatherhood in a blog post, writing, "Like most parents, I believe my children to be more dynamic, more charming, funnier, smarter, more perceptive and sensitive, more athletic, and more beautiful than other people's children.
'I love my children. At this moment they still adore us. It's a lovely time of life.'
Just days ago Andrew was in the UK where he managed to watch his fellow New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen play at Anfield Stadium, Liverpool.

He even managed to gab a selfie with The Boss backstage, topping off an unforgettable night.
Music lover Andrew was also over the moon to witness Beatle Sir Paul McCartney appearing as a guest in his hometown performing Can't Buy Me Love.
Last year he released the documentary Brats on Disney+, which revisited his fraught relationship with the Brat Pack.
The Pack - coined by a New York magazine article in 1985 - was a collection of young, talented and, in some cases, wild American stars of the era.
Among its ranks were Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Tom Cruise, Nicolas Cage, Sean Penn, Emilio Estevez and Matt Dillon.
Andrew made his feelings clear on the title, telling The Times: "Who wants to be called a brat? Who wants to be lumped into a pack? The public went, 'Oh my God, we love that!' Whereas the industry perceived it as a very negative indictment.'
At the same time his star was soaring, Andrew had an addiction to alcohol, which he eventually sought help for in 1992.

He began drinking when he was 12 and insists he'd have abused booze irrespective of his fame.
'I abused alcohol — that's no secret," he said. "I just got to drink better vodka because I was in the movies. It affected my career, and it took me several years to realise I had a problem.'
He's now been sober for 33 years.
Though he has landed roles consistently through the 90s and noughties, he hasn't recaptured the same level of fame that both blessed and cursed him in the 80s.
Notable recent roles on TV include Orange Is The New Black, 13 Reasons Why and Gossip Girl.

Now, just under three weeks since Ozzy's death, the younger singer has shared his feelings about his death. He admits he has found the death of his mentor "overwhelming" after previously declaring the star as "the greatest of all time" in a touching tribute. The chart topping singer has candidly explained that the sudden death of his friend has been hard to process. He told The Times:"I told a friend that I thought Ozzy had another five albums in him. And then he did the show and then he died. It's so overwhelming." He continued: "I just love him and right till the very end he supported me. I get emotional, because I've loved him since I was about two." And he added: "He taught me self-belief and so I'm going to take his spirit and make sure everybody knows for the rest of my life who Ozzy Osbourne was - he meant everything to me." The report also explained that the singer learned of Ozzy's death while he was on a remote island without internet access where he had been recording new music. Yungblud's interview comes after he paid emotional tributes to Ozzy in the wake of the news of his death. On 22 July, hours after it was announced the MTV star had died, Yungblud took to Instagram to shares candid photos of himself chatting to and smiling alongside wheelchair bound Ozzy. He wrote in an emotional caption: "I didn't think you would leave so soon the last time we met you were so full of life and your laugh filled up the room. But as it is written with legends, they seem to know the things that we don't. "I will never forget you - you will be in every single note I sing and with me every single time I walk on stage. Your cross around my neck is the most precious thing I own. You asked me once if there was anything you could do for me and as I said then and as I will say now for all of us the music was enough. Freddie Mercury's closest friend Mary Austin casts doubt on secret child claims
Freddie Mercury's ex-partner and long-time close friend Mary Austin has broken her silence on claims he had a secret child. The Queen legend died in November 1991, aged 45, having publicly shared that he had AIDS shortly before. Having once stated that he was bisexual, Mercury was known to have relationships with both men and women throughout his life, one of whom was Austin. They enjoyed a long-term romance in the early 70s, having met through guitarist Sir Brian May. While they got engaged in 1973, they ultimately split but remained good pals until Mercury's death, with him once calling her his 'only friend'. Mercury, who met Autin when he was 23 and he was 19, said in 1985: 'All my lovers ask me why they couldn't replace Mary, but it's impossible. The only friend I've got is Mary, and I don't want anybody else. We believe in each other; that's enough for me.' Fast forward to March 2025, and a woman came forward alleging the Bohemian Rhapsody hitmaker was her father after he had a brief fling with a friend's wife. Born in 1976, she speaks out for the first time in her new book, titled Love, Freddie and written by biographer Lesley-Ann Jones, claiming Mercury was 'devoted' to her. Up until now, it's believed only Mercury's Queen bandmates, parents, sister, and former partner, Austin, knew about the child's identity. Now 48, working in medicine and with kids of her own, she is referred to only as B. However, in her new interview, ex-fiancée Austin has poured cold water on the allegations, insisting she did not know of B's existence. Talking to The Times, Austin, who inherited much of Mercury's estate, said she would be 'astonished' if the claims were proven to be true. 'Freddie had a glorious openness, and I cannot imagine he would have wanted to, or been able to, keep such a joyful event a secret, either from me or other people closest to him,' Austin said. She also responded to the 17 handwritten diary entries that Mercury allegedly gave to his daughter shortly before his death, which B says she was trusted with as 'his only child and his next of kin'. In a letter to Jones for her book, B says: 'Mary Austin—the wonderful woman who was to all intents and purposes his wife until death parted them—knew absolutely everything about him, including all his undisclosed secrets.' But Austin herself denies such a thing. The 74-year-old added: 'The truth is that I am simply not the guardian of such a secret. 'I've never known of any child, or of any diaries. If Freddie had indeed had a child without me knowing anything about it, that would be astonishing to me.' Austin says that, if the We Will Rock You star did have a daughter, it would have brought him 'tremendous joy', as well as to his parents and 'everybody who cared about him'. While she believes that Mercury's parents, Bomi and Jer Bulsara, would have 'embraced her with all the love in their hearts', she 'does not remember Freddie ever speaking about creating a family.' Her comments admittedly come as a 'surprise' to author Jones, who responded to The Times by claiming she approached Austin for an interview 'countless times over many years, but she never once responded'. 'Mary was not party to a secret that Freddie had a child? I do not suggest that she was. Nor do I suggest that she was aware of or was passed any diaries,' Jones says. She proceeds to reiterate B's statement that Austin 'knew everything about [Mercury]' but specifies that the rocker's alleged daughter has not divulged which 'undisclosed secrets' Austin may have been privy to. More Trending Austin's interview, which she felt compelled to give due to the secret child claims gaining traction, follows B taking a paternity test to prove her identity. Taking to X, hitting out at allegations B is lying, writer Jones said: 'To those 'demanding' to see proof of a DNA test, otherwise they won't believe it – please rest assured that the requisite verification was obtained, legal teams have been involved, but that such measures are private & not shared publicly. Thank you'. She implored critics to 'wait and see' if they are doubting the legitimacy of Mercury's diary entries, after B denied wanting money or fame after coming forward. Jessie J 'rolls eyes' at horribly inappropriate fan demand after cancer surgery
Jessie J has detailed how she was met with messages of unwanted 'advice' in the aftermath of sharing her breast cancer diagnosis. In June the singer, 37, revealed she'd been diagnosed with 'early breast cancer' a few months earlier. At the time Jessie – real name Jessica Ellen Cornish – said she was set to 'disappear' for a bit to undergo a mastectomy. 'I'm getting to keep my nipples … that's good. It's a very dramatic way to get a boob job!,' she joked. Although Jessie had made light of the surgery by saying she would 'come back with massive boobs', she's now shared how many weighed in and made comments about her breasts. In an interview with The Times, Jessie detailed the unsolicited advice some attempted to pass on. 'People messaged me saying, 'Don't get big implants',' she recalled while rolling her eyes. 'Like, this isn't cosmetic surgery, it's a mastectomy. I was able to keep my nipple but it's all numb now. 'And when I bend down it looks like I've got a plastic carrier bag in my boob because you can see the wrinkles.' Jessie's early diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) allowed her to avoid chemo and radiotherapy, but the large size of her tumour (5cm), required a full mastectomy. Following the surgery, Jessie's mum was helping massage her boob recently (as she can't touch the scars) but started sobbing and in shock over 'how this has happened'. Although she recently received the all-clear, Jessie is feeling 'cautiously confident' but still needs another surgery and 'to heal'. She also was pragmatic about the cancer returning, citing the statistic that there was a 1 in 2 chance of it happening. Jessie's breast cancer diagnosis came in the middle of her music comeback after three years without releasing new music. Her next album is due to be released at the end of the year, but Jessie also said that if she 'died tomorrow' she wouldn't car about where her songs have charted and was instead more concerned about how she'd 'made people feel'. Last week she was rushed back into hospital after having an infection and fluid on her lungs develop. In a series of posts shared on social media, Jessie said she was also 'finding it hard to breathe' but was eventually able to leave and go home. More Trending Jessie has previously been open about other health issues. She's spoken before about being diagnosed with Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome as a child, a condition that makes the heartbeat abnormally fast. She also suffered a minor stroke as a teenager and, in 2020, was in a car accident that injured her larynx and left her unable to sing for a year. The singer is mum to son Sky, who was born in May 2023. His dad is professional basketball player Chanan Colman, whom Jessie began dating in 2021.
