A Pennsylvania man who came to the United States as a child and was once recognized by former President Barack Obama is now being held in federal custody following a routine court appearance.
Darwin Contreras, 27, has lived in the United States since he was 7 years old, and was a recipient of the President's Education Awards Program, his wife, Elizabeth DeJesus, told Newsweek.
Newsweek has obtained a copy of the award dated January 2012, during Obama's presidency.
"This boy was turning into an athletic man with dreams of pursuing soccer as a career. His senior year, he unfortunately had to drop out and get a job. So instead, he picked up track and field," DeJesus told Newsweek.

"He motivated his teammates to go hard during practice and to never stop. After graduating from high school, he got a job and continued to work hard," she added.
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), told Newsweek that ICE agents detained Contreras during a court hearing for driving under the influence.
"His criminal history includes convictions for theft and possession of marijuana. This criminal illegal alien admitted to law enforcement that he is in the country illegally," McLaughlin said.
The arrest comes as the White House is attempting to carry out what it calls the largest deportation operation in U.S. history as part of the President Donald Trump's hard-line immigration agenda.
Contreras' journey to the U.S. from El Salvador was marked by trauma, his wife said. During both of his border crossings, he witnessed harrowing scenes, including dead bodies and acts of exploitation.
On his second attempt, instead of being reunited with his mother, he was met by authorities and a caseworker, and spent time in detention before being placed in a foster home. He eventually reunited with his mother, and he went on to grow up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he attended school and thrived.
In elementary school, he received awards for his academic efforts, and in middle school, he earned a Presidential Fitness Award from then-President Obama. He later turned to sports, excelling in track and field and being named MVP during his senior year after initially having to leave school to support himself.
After graduating from high school, Contreras began working full-time, supporting himself and eventually becoming a father. Later, he met DeJesus, now 22, and the couple married in March of this year. Both work at the same restaurant, and Contreras was in the process of applying for his citizenship when he was detained.
On June 24, after attending a court proceeding related to the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition (ARD) program, Darwin was taken into custody by ICE agents who were waiting at the courthouse. DeJesus recalls the agents wearing "something you can get from Walmart" and being given no immediate information on where her husband was being taken. Later she learned he had been transported to Pike County Correctional Facility.
DeJesus said ICE's actions have disrupted not only their lives, but have left her husband in a deteriorating mental and physical state.
"At first, when he got there, he was not adjusting well, he was not OK, his mental health was not good," she said.
As they await the hearing date, she continues to advocate for Contreras' release and hopes his long-standing ties to the U.S., their marriage, and his contributions to the community will be taken into account.

The Presidential Fitness Test was a part of American physical education classes from the time it was first initiated by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 to the 2012-2013 school year. The executive order says the Trump administration is reintroducing the test in the nation's public schools because of the high rates of obesity and chronic disease in the United States. The president also reestablished the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, formerly known as the President's Council on Youth Fitness, created by Eisenhower in 1956. The White House called the move an attempt "to develop bold and innovative fitness goals for young Americans with the aim of fostering a new generation of healthy, active citizens." Trump directed the reestablished council to create school-based programs that "reward excellence in physical education and develop criteria for a Presidential Fitness Award" in his order. "This Order ensures American youth will have opportunities at the global, national, State, and local levels that emphasize the importance of an active lifestyle, good nutrition, American sports, and military readiness," the White House said in a statement to USA TODAY. Why did the Presidential Fitness Test go away? The Obama administration replaced the Presidential Fitness Test with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program to shift the focus on physical fitness in schools away from student performance and toward students' overall health as they grow into adulthood. "The program minimizes comparisons between children and instead supports students as they pursue personal fitness goals for lifelong health," reads a previous description of the program from the Department of Health and Human Services website. Paul Roetert, former chief executive officer of the Society of Health and Physical Educators, said at the time that it was implemented "to keep fitness in a positive mode," Education Week reported in 2012.'Children's individual fitness scores will not be used as a criteria for grading in physical education class and will be confidential between the teacher, student and parent,' Roetert said. Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association, also supported the change when it was implemented more than a decade ago, the news outlet reported. 'This assessment will be a great way to evaluate the health impact of physical education programs in schools and allow for a standardized comparison of fitness levels of children across the country,' Brown said. Photo Shows China Missile System Replica Training US Fighter Pilots
The United States is using a replica of a Chinese air defense missile system as part of its fighter pilot training in preparation for combat, the Wisconsin National Guard has said. Newsweek has contacted the Wisconsin National Guard and the Chinese Defense Ministry for comment via email. The Pentagon has designated the Indo-Pacific as its "priority theater," identifying China as both its "pacing threat"-a direct, consequential and near-term danger to U.S. security and values-and its "pacing challenge"-a long-term risk to U.S. influence, position and power. In July, U.S. forces participated in two large-scale Pacific war games simultaneously-the Australia-hosted, multinational Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025 and the U.S. Air Force's "first in a generation" Department-Level Exercise series-amid growing threats from China. According to a photo released by the Wisconsin National Guard on Tuesday, the Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center showcased an "HQ-16 towable surrogate target" during an aviation gathering at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on July 25. The HQ-16 is a Chinese medium-range air defense missile system. The towable surrogate target replicates the system's radar vehicle, a Chinese military observer who requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the topic told Newsweek. In a news release, the Wisconsin National Guard said the Chinese air defense system replica serves as a full-scale training aid designed to familiarize fifth-generation fighter pilots with modern surface-to-air missile systems they may encounter in a combat scenario. The term "fifth-generation fighter" refers to aircraft designed with stealth capabilities that reduce their visibility to radar detection. Both the U.S. and China operate such combat jets and are racing to develop more advanced next-generation-or sixth-generation-aircraft. Full-scale mock-ups allow aircrews to train against realistic representations of peer and near-peer threats, according to David Cenciotti, the editor of the Aviationist. "Depending on the type of decoy, they can support visual identification as well as the detection of electronic signatures via onboard sensors," Cenciotti told Newsweek. He added that some of the world's most advanced training ranges were equipped with so-called high definition targets, which are used for both visual and sensor training. According to the Aviationist, the HQ-16 air defense system initially had a range of about 24.8 miles to intercept aerial targets, with the upgraded version extending this to about 46.6 miles. U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant Alan Hughes, a vehicle maintenance specialist assigned to the Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center, said in a news release on Tuesday: "People are often familiar with our aircraft, but may not understand all the effort that goes into getting those planes into the fight. Our HQ-16 target display offers a tiny snippet of all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into keeping our pilots and aircraft combat-ready." David Cenciotti, the editor of the Aviationist, told Newsweek: "Similar mock-ups have been observed in the past at U.S. test ranges, as documented by reports and satellite imagery, and are often used to replicate adversary systems for threat emulation and pilot training." It is likely that the U.S. military has increased its use of such decoys in training. The most recent mock-ups in the U.S. all replicate Chinese military hardware, according to Cenciotti. Kamala Harris' Odds of Becoming President Soar at Bookmaker
The odds-on Kamala Harris becoming the next president have improved sharply from 50/1 (2 percent) to 25/1 (3.8 percent) among one bookmaker after the former vice president announced on Wednesday that she won't be running to be the next governor of California in 2026. Newsweek contacted Harris for comment on Thursday via email outside of regular office hours. Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom's term ends in January 2025, and he is term-limited. There had been much speculation about whether Harris, a former Senator from the state who lost the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump, would run for the seat. picking up 226 Electoral College votes against 312 for her Republican rival. The Democrats could have a wide-open primary in 2028 as the party has reexamined its leaders following the second loss to Trump. Newsom and Harris have both been mentioned as possible candidates, though the former vice president could face headwinds if she chose to run again after her 2024 defeat. U.K. based bookmaker William Hill is currently offering odds of 25/1 (3.8 percent) on Harris becoming the next president of the United States, an improvement on the 50/1 (2 percent) it had before the former vice president announced she won't run for governor. In a statement released on Wednesday Harris said she had "given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their governor" but "after deep reflection, I've decided that I will not run for Governor in this election." The current William Hill favorite to win the 2028 presidential election is Vice President JD Vance, at 5/2 (28.6 percent). This is followed by the current Trump at 8/1 (11.1 percent), though he is serving in his second term and most constitutional scholars say that he is prohibited from running for a third term. As of yet, the president has refused to rule another bid out, commenting in March that "there are methods [by] which you could do it." In the William Hill odds the current vice president and president are followed by House Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Newsom each at 9/1 (10 percent), former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a Democrat, at 12/1 (7.7 percent) and Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro at 14/1 (6.7 percent). The president's son, Donald Trump Jr., and former Democratic Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel follow at 16/1 (5.9 percent) apiece, then Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a Republican, and Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer with 20/1 each (4.8 percent). In addition to Harris former first lady Michelle Obama, the wife of Democratic President Barack Obama, Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Democratic Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Democratic Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, each had odds of 25/1 (3.8 percent) on being elected in 2028. Speaking to Newsweek William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: "With Kamala Harris effectively ruling herself out of the running to become the next Governor of California, we think she could have her eyes on the 2028 presidential election. "Harris is currently our fourth worst result in our Next President market and after her latest career update, we've slashed her odds accordingly to 25/1 from 50/1. "Harris isn't the only Democrat that has been popular in the market, with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez consistently attracting support since the end of last year—when she was priced at 50/1—so much so that she is the worst result in our book and is now 9/1, third favorite behind JD Vance (5/2) and Donald Trump Sr (8/1)." Harris has not announced whether she will run in 2028 and such a declaration would be highly unusual this early in the campaign cycle. Democratic Party primaries are expected to begin in early 2028 ahead of the main contest in November.
