[UPDATED] Anwar: Businesses must seize the economic momentum established by leaders
KUALA LUMPUR: The business community of Asean, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China must seize the economic momentum established by their leaders and turn it into tangible outcomes.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that while governments have laid the groundwork for stronger regional cooperation, the private sector must now step up to ensure that the ambitions of shared prosperity and deeper integration are fully realised.
"We have done our part. The political leadership has assured you of stability and given you the policy clarity, attractive investments, and the promotion of new technology.
"We will do whatever is necessary to promote investments and make our countries attractive to investors.
"Now that we have finished our session, the ball is in your court. The business community, the corporate players, the captains of industry must seize the moment and do whatever is necessary, because we have given our support and policy clarity," he said in his opening remarks at the Asean-GCC-China gala dinner, held in conjunction with the Asean-GCC Economic Forum 2025.
Anwar praised the collective leadership of Asean, the GCC and China for reaching a consensus that outlines shared principles of good governance, clear economic policy and prioritising citizens' welfare.
"As such, I salute all our Asean, GCC and China leaders. We have proven that it can be done.
"I look forward to this Asean-GCC-China Economic Summit because we want to see results, and it is now your (business community's) duty to act and ensure that our countries benefit from one another.
"There is so much synergy, so much collaboration needed, and so much hope to fulfil the aspirations of our countries."
The high-level summit, hosted by Malaysia as Asean Chair, brought together leaders from both regional blocs to strengthen cooperation across political, economic and security domains.
The 46th Asean Summit, held under Malaysia's 2025 Chairmanship theme, "Inclusivity and Sustainability", marks the country's fifth term as Asean Chair, following previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.

Move on, focus on replacing Tengku Zafrul in govt, Umno told
Former minister Nazri Aziz says investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz's exit from Umno should not be seen as a crisis. PETALING JAYA : Former Umno minister Nazri Aziz has urged the party to stop fretting over Tengku Zafrul Aziz's departure and instead focus on naming a replacement for him in the Cabinet. Nazri said Tengku Zafrul, who has announced his exit from Umno and also intention to join PKR, had done nothing wrong and was simply exercising his freedom of association. 'Why do you (Umno) want to stop people who don't want to be with us? Just let it be and move on,' he told FMT. 'And I don't think it's even impactful. So, I would advise Umno members not to worry about this and just focus on getting someone to take over the Cabinet position following Tengku Zafrul's departure from the party.' Nazri said Tengku Zafrul's departure was also expected, especially since he had stepped down as Selangor Umno treasurer in April last year. 'Actually, it's good for Umno now because he's going to finish his senatorship anyway, and then I'm sure the (Cabinet) vacancy will be given back to Umno,' he added. Tengku Zafrul is currently the investment, trade and industry minister in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's Cabinet. Despite being an Umno member since 1997, the former CIMB Group CEO was widely seen as a technocrat when named as finance minister in Muhyiddin Yassin's Cabinet in March 2020, a role he retained in the subsequent Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration. Tengku Zafrul has been a senator since 2020, when he was first appointed, in order to take on his Cabinet positions. The senatorship has a maximum tenure of two terms, each lasting three years. Since the announcement of his exit, Umno Youth and Wanita Umno have urged Tengku Zafrul to relinquish his Cabinet position. Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zakarshi, on the other hand, questioned whether Tengku Zafrul can be held liable for RM100 million in damages for allegedly breaching his pledge as a Barisan Nasional candidate during the last general election (GE15). Separately, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan urged Umno members and supporters not to be disturbed by the departure of any individual. 'This party was not built in a day or two, nor does it stand on the shoulders of a single person. Umno is a responsibility far greater than that,' he said in a Facebook post expressing respect for Tengku Zafrul's decision and gratitude for his contributions. 'We have far more important work, to unite, to improve, and to restore the people's trust in us.'

Amirudin confident of staying as MB despite Tengku Zafrul's PKR move
Amirudin Shari believes that Tengku Zafrul Aziz's entry can strengthen PKR. (X pic) PETALING JAYA : Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari says he intends to remain in his post despite speculation that Tengku Zafrul Aziz's anticipated entry into PKR could see a challenge to his position. Amirudin, a PKR vice-president, said the move was unlikely to trigger a by-election or displace him as menteri besar, given that the state has just over two years left in its current term, Harian Metro reported. 'God willing, I will remain as menteri besar. 'He (Tengku Zafrul) is going to perform the hajj pilgrimage, and I have asked him to pray for me,' he was quoted as saying after an event in Selayang today. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul announced that he had submitted his resignation as an Umno member and would be applying to join PKR, led by Anwar Ibrahim. Citing 'compatibility and suitability', Tengku Zafrul said he decided to leave Umno after seeking advice from friends within and outside the party, including party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. His announcement, however, drew a sharp backlash, with Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki warning PKR against accepting him. PKR, on the other hand, has said it will consider input from grassroots members and its partners in the unity government before deciding on the application. Amirudin also said Tengku Zafrul's entry into PKR could bolster the party's credibility and expressed confidence that they could work well together. 'For example, in several meetings and government dealings, he (as investment, trade and industry minister) has been involved in the aerospace and semiconductor sectors, and we have established strong collaborations,' he said. When asked about the impact on relations with Umno, Amirudin said that a lengthy discussion took place today but declined to disclose details. 'I believe an understanding can be or has been reached, but I am not fully informed about it,' he said.

Esteel's RM31bil project a vote of confidence in Sabah's future, says Hajiji
Chief minister Hajiji Noor said Sabah is committed to creating a stable and investor-friendly environment to drive economic growth. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor has hailed the RM31 billion three-phased project by Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd as a major milestone for the state's economic development. He said it would generate jobs, foster innovation, and support local businesses. Speaking at the launch of the project's Phase 1 at the Sabah International Convention Centre yesterday, Hajiji thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Singapore-based Green Esteel Group for backing Sabah's industrial ambitions. 'This project is not merely a financial commitment, but it is a vote of your confidence in our vision and in our capacity to foster growth and development,' he said in his speech. Hajiji added that the steel manufacturing plant, located in the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip), is expected to create a wide range of 'ripple effects' in sectors such as green technology and local entrepreneurship. He stressed that job creation must benefit Sabahans first and urged industry players to prioritise the training and upskilling of the local workforce. 'I want all industry players to invest in the training and development of our local workforce and to comply with this fundamental requirement as a core principle of our commitment to local development,' he said. Hajiji also credited more than a dozen federal and state agencies for their role in fast-tracking approvals for the Esteel project and assured the group that their 'trust is well-placed'. 'Together, we have the potential to achieve remarkable outcomes, leading the way for growth and development,' he said. Hajiji reaffirmed that Sabah will maintain its investor-friendly stance, noting that the state has implemented policies to attract more investors. 'We are committed to creating a conducive environment that nurtures investments and fosters collaboration,' he said, adding that besides Sogip, the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park has seen increased tenancy over the past four years. Due to high investor demand, Hajiji said the state government had approved three new industrial parks in Kota Belud, Beaufort, and Kudat under its Blue Economy initiative.
