Ahmad Zahid backs 13MP focus on skilled talent through TVET

by HIDAYATH HISHAM
DEPUTY Prime Minister (DPM) Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi welcomes the emphasis on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in the 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13) as a strategy to build a skilled workforce.
Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the National TVET Council, said the initiative aligns with the government's efforts to position TVET as a key pathway for producing relevant and competitive talent.
'This includes the implementation of the TVET Madani Programme, which now targets 'tahfiz' and 'huffaz' students. Therefore, I extend my deepest thanks to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his strong commitment to strengthening TVET,' he told reporters at Parliament today.
He added that the government will focus on broadening access to skills training, improving the wage outcomes of TVET graduates and ensuring better alignment between industry demand and national economic planning.
Ahmad Zahid also expressed appreciation for the inclusion of the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (PuTERA 35), which he said would benefit communities in rural, suburban and urban areas across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
He noted that MP13's disaster management strategy — which allocates over RM20 billion for flood mitigation, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered early warning systems and improved disaster governance — reflects the government's long-term commitment to building resilience.
'I believe this is a long-term plan that can provide effective mitigation for natural disasters such as floods, which we have long sought to address,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid said the five-year development plan comes at a critical time as the country faces global economic uncertainties and supply chain disruptions that could challenge competitiveness and public wellbeing.
He described MP13 as more than an economic blueprint, saying it is a reflection of the government's pledge to drive equitable growth and ensure no Malaysian is left behind.
Earlier today, Anwar presented MP13 in the Dewan Rakyat, stating that the five-year plan would deliver tangible outcomes for the rakyat and lay a strong foundation for Malaysia to advance into a more prosperous decade.

Kulim airport will complement, not compete with Penang, says Kedah councillor

KUALA KETIL: The state government will press for the inclusion of the Kulim International Airport (KXP) project in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), describing it as crucial not only for Kedah, but also for the nation. State Industry and Investment Committee chairman Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah said the state's vision for a dedicated cargo airport was not intended to compete with Penang, but to complement it while positioning Kedah as a hub for northern regional development. "However, the federal government still views this project as if it is solely for Kedah, when in fact, we see it as a catalyst for northern regional development covering Kedah, Perlis, Penang and northern Perak. "This is a large and high-potential region that deserves federal support," he said at a press conference after a town hall with the Kedah State Development Corporation (PKNK) and industrial players here. Also present was PKNK chief executive officer Datuk Isahak Murat. Haim said the state's push for the project was within national interest. "Kedah is not just for Kedah, Kedah is for Malaysia. We hope the federal government can see the strategic position of the state in becoming an industrial development hub supported by infrastructure such as this cargo airport." He said six of the eight requirements for the project had been met, with only two outstanding, namely, obtaining the aerodrome licence and securing the airport's inclusion in the National Aerospace Strategic Plan. The state government, he added, had also submitted other proposals to Putrajaya for consideration in 13MP. "Many projects, whether related to logistics such as roads, airports and ports, or other aspects of economic development in Kedah, need to be prioritised and expedited," he said. In the town hall, Haim said the issues raised by industrial players were matters that could be addressed through the involvement and commitment of the relevant agencies. "This initiative by PKNK is commendable. The most important step after this session is to compile the list of issues and channel them to the relevant agencies. From there, we will obtain feedback on the timeframe for resolving these matters," he added.

13MP: Lawmakers Propose Advanced Technology To Strengthen Felda, National Defence

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Strengthening the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) must be a priority under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to ensure the long-term economic sustainability of settlers, a lawmaker told Parliament today. Datuk Shamsulkahar Mohd Deli (BN–Jempol) said 112,635 settlers across 317 Felda land schemes nationwide, including 36 in his constituency, require sustained and strategic government support to navigate new challenges. Shamsulkahar proposed adopting advanced technologies such as drones and robotic machinery in oil palm plantations to boost yields and reduce reliance on foreign labour.
