Portugal arrests six linked to a far-right group and seizes explosives and weapons

Washington Post9 hours ago

MADRID — Portuguese authorities arrested six people linked to a far-right group and seized explosive material and several firearms, police said Tuesday.
The detainees are believed to belong to the so-called Movimento Armilar Lusitano (MAL), which sought to establish itself as a political movement supported by an armed militia, according to a police statement.

Supreme Court Justices Disclose International Travel, Book Deals

Trips to lecture in Europe, Latin America and Hawaii. Millions of dollars in book deals. Income from teaching at prestigious law schools. Supreme Court justices offered a window into some of the perks of being part of the nation's highest court in their annual financial disclosures, which were released on Tuesday and covered the justices' activities last year. Under a federal law passed after the Watergate scandal in the 1970s, the justices must disclose gifts, travel and outside income. There has been increased scrutiny of the disclosures in recent years, particularly after revelations that Justice Clarence Thomas had failed to disclose years of lavish gifts and travel from wealthy friends, including the Texas billionaire Harlan Crow. Justice Thomas has said he did not believe that he was required to disclose the gifts. In his latest report, Justice Thomas listed no gifts or private jet travel. In an addendum, however, he wrote that he had 'inadvertently omitted' a life insurance policy from prior reports. The policy, he noted, was purchased in July 2001 and terminated last month. Justice Thomas indicated that the policy covered someone other than himself, and added that 'confusion arose on whether the policy needed to be disclosed.' He did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The forms are only a few pages and provide limited details. But they often give colorful examples of the justices' lives off the bench. Video shows Brad Lander's arrest by ICE agents

Brad Lander, New York City's comptroller and a Democratic candidate for mayor, was arrested at immigration court in Manhattan Tuesday. U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Lander was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer. "No one is above the law, and if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will face consequences," a DHS spokesperson said. Lander's wife Meg Barnette held a news conference after he was detained, saying they were at court to observe immigration hearings. She said Lander repeatedly asked in court to see the judicial warrant and grounds for deportation when they linked arms with the person the court hearing was about, saying they locked arms. "We asked numerous times for the warrant, for their names, for their badge numbers. It was unclear what agency they were from, they're in full uniform, in many cases, with a mask pulled up over the bridge of their nose," said Barnette. "So Brad, I assume, was saying, 'I am an American citizen, I am asking you for the judicial warrant, you do not have grounds to arrest me.'" Much of Lander's arrest was captured on video, which shows Lander holding onto another person. Lander can be seen surrounded by agents as he asks "Do you have a judicial warrant? Can I see the warrant? I will let go when I see the warrant. Where is it? Where is the warrant?" "You're obstructing," someone can be heard saying, and then Lander is separated from the person he was holding onto. Lander can be seen in the video being pressed against a wall while surrounded by three people, who then pressed him against the wall. "You don't have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens," Lander said as he was placed in handcuffs. "I'm not obstructing. I'm standing right here in the hallway ... I asked to see the judicial warrant ... you don't have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens asking for a judicial warrant." The video shows a handcuffed Lander being escorted down the hallway while agents grip his arms. As they were waiting for the elevator, Lander's press secretary could be heard identifying herself and asking where he was being taken. She received no reply.

ECB Should Watch Oil Price, Euro in Setting Rates, Villeroy Says

The European Central Bank needs to assess fluctuations in oil prices and the euro as it sets borrowing costs, according to Governing Council member Francois Villeroy de Galhau. While the ECB doesn't target a particular exchange rate, the common currency has demonstrated surprising strength against the dollar since President Donald Trump began his tariff push. Energy prices, meanwhile, jumped after Israel launched attacks on Iran.
