Tehran Movie Review: John Abraham and Manushi Chhillar's spy thriller is intense, engaging and sharp

Tehran is John Abraham's career best performance after Diplomat. This film gives a new high to patriotic films.
**Director:**Arun Gopalan
Cast: John Abraham, Maanushi Chhillar, Neeru Bajwa, and others
One doesn't need to be a 'by the book' officer to be considered good at his job. John Abraham who plays a police officer, DCP Rajeev Kumar is one such man, who cannot take his job dispassionately.
He is emotional too. From the beginning of the film we realise that it is not going to be a simple espionage thriller. The twist and turns to this film were plenty. From the very beginning the geo-political tension of Iran-Israel is what makes the story strong. John Abraham delivers his career best performance.

Tehran Movie Review: John Abraham and Manushi Chhillar's spy thriller is intense, engaging and sharp
Inspired by real events, the characters are fictitious. The film begins with a bombing in Delhi which killed a little girl who was selling flowers. DCP Rajeev Kumar (John Abraham) couldn't get over this incident. Kumar is put on this case.
But as usual, he gets personal because he knew this girl from whom he had brought flowers. The girl dies in the hospital, but her face keeps haunting him. He immerses himself in the case as if it is his personal loss. He makes arrangements for this girl's brother in an orphanage and spends time with this young kid too. While Rajeev is a patriot, he soon finds himself abandoned by India and Israel and hunted by Iran.
A still from Tehran
Though Manushi Chhillar, as SI Divya Rana was given limited screen time. Yet she plays a strong role and delivers her best. Without much dialogue, she makes her presence felt. I don't think anybody else would have done a better job than her. Same goes for Neeru Bajwa who plays the role of a diplomat Sheilaja is also very powerful. These women with limited dialogues, show their position in the most graceful possible way. We realise that the job of a civil servant is not as glamorous as it appears to be.
The movie is a slow-burn. Some may even find it like a documentary. But it is a must-watch for those who take interest in geo-politics.
Rating: 3 out of 5

This court drama film received 96 cuts by censor board, got surrounded by controversy, is now streaming on OTT platform, movie is…, lead actors were…

A film that was halted, debated, and censored, nearly 100 times, finally found its voice on OTT. It faced courtroom hurdles before it could show any courtroom drama onscreen. What began as a bold statement soon became a headline itself, inviting objections, legal notices, and public protests. But now, the storm has settled, and the film has quietly arrived on streaming platforms, allowing viewers to see what all the controversy was about. Which film is this? Here we are talking about Janaki V vs State of Kerala, now streaming on ZEE5. Directed by Pravin Narayanan, this powerful courtroom drama stars Anupama Parameswaran in the lead role as Janaki Vidhyadharan. She plays a young IT professional who, during a festival visit to her hometown, experiences a harrowing event that forces her to take on the legal system. Her decision to file a case sparks a tense, emotionally charged courtroom battle that forms the crux of the film. Veteran actor Suresh Gopi takes on the role of David Abel Donovan, a brilliant lawyer defending the accused, bringing intensity and gravitas to the screen. What were the challenges that stopped its release? The film's journey to release was no less dramatic than its plot. Originally titled Janaki, the film faced immediate resistance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which objected to the use of the name 'Janaki,' arguing that it could hurt religious sentiments since it's also the name of the goddess Sita. As a result, board ordered 96 cuts and changes, a highly unusual and controversial move in recent times. The filmmakers challenged the decision legally, taking the case to the Kerala High Court.

The much-awaited courtroom drama Janaki V vs. State of Kerala has premiered on a digital platform, nearly a month after its theatrical release. Starring Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran in the lead roles, Janaki V vs. State of Kerala has created a significant buzz among audiences. Malayalam actor-politician Suresh Gopi, who earlier captured the heart of audiences with his role of a lawyer in Chinthamani Kolacase, once again donned the hat of a lawyer in Janaki V v/s State of Kerala, or JSK. Janaki V vs. State of Kerala Premieres on OTT After a successful theatrical run, Janaki V vs. State of Kerala begins premiering on OTT giants ZEE5 and OTTplay Premium on August 15. The Malayalam film is available to stream in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, on the platforms. Plot Helmed by Pravin Narayanan Janaki V vs. State of Kerala follows the story of a young IT professional, Janaki V, and her battle both within and outside the courtroom. The film highlights Janaki's struggles and hardships while she seeks justice for herself. However, things take an unexpected turn when an advocate talks up her case and challenges the Indian judiciary system. Cast In the high-octane courtroom drama Suresh Gopi essays the character of a lawyer, while Anupama Parameswaran plays the role of Janaki. Other cast members of the film include Shruthi Ramachandran, Askar Ali, Baiju Santhosh and Madhav Suresh, son of Suresh Gopi. Janaki V vs. State of Kerala CBFC Row JSK was initially slated to release in theatres on June 20, 2025, but the film was delayed as the Central Board of Film Certification raised concerns over the name Janaki and did not grant certification. The board asked the makers to remove the name; however, when the film's makers refused to remove the name, the issue was taken up in court. As the feud with the CBFC continued, various Malayalam film personalities openly supported the film, stating such demands were arbitrary. In the end both the parties agreed to a settlement. The makers agreed to modify the title and mute the usage of Janaki at certain instances in the film, which was eventually granted the censor certificate. Finally, after the long dispute, the film made its theatrical release on July 17, before beginning streaming on Zee5 via OTTplay Premium at midnight on August 15. view comments First Published: August 16, 2025, 17:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
