5 open source apps which give me a premium experience for free

Hindustan Times6 hours ago

Are you tired of paying thousands for apps and services? Don't worry, today I am going to tell you about five of my favourite open-source apps that I use daily. These apps are completely free to use, but keep in mind that some of them are only available for Android. Give them a try, and you might just find your new go-to apps without spending a dime.
Joplin is a really good notetaking app that comes with a simple interface and is available on all major platforms. It lets you sync the notes across platforms and the best part is that you can import your notes from Evernote to Joplin.
It saves your notes locally on the device and also lets you sync with Joplin Cloud, Nextcloud, OneDrive and Dropbox. The interface is clean and easy to use, but can be highly customised with plugins and themes.
I love to read news from my favourite websites first thing in the morning, but opening all the websites one by one is tedious. To read all the latest posts, I use ReadYou. It is an open-source app available only for Android, featuring a clean and simple interface.
It uses the Material You design and has zero distractions between you and your feed. You can create custom feeds for different topics, and it can send you notifications when a new article is published. It can parse full content, so there is no need to open a browser to read the entire story. Apple users can use NetNewsWire, an open-source app available for iOS and macOS.
I am an Android user but use a MacBook as my work laptop, and sharing files between these two devices can be frustrating. LocalSend is a lifesaver in this situation. I can share files across my Android and MacBook easily without using wires, even for large video files.
The LocalSend app is available on all platforms and is very simple to use. There are no ads on either the phone or desktop versions. You can share not only files but also text from the clipboard, text messages, and even entire folders.
Changing passwords frequently is a good practice to keep your accounts safe. But I cannot remember new passwords for hundreds of websites, so I use Bitwarden. It is an open-source app that is completely free to use. If you are a basic user, the free version is perfect and will always remain free. It offers unlimited devices and passkey management.
AdAway is hands down the best ad blocker for Android users like me. It's completely free and open source, which I love. The app works by updating your device's hosts file to block ads system-wide, not just in browsers but across all apps. If your phone is rooted, it's even easier to set up, and the results are fantastic.

Soon, you can upload video on Gemini app and ask questions about it: Report

Google's Gemini app is reportedly getting a new capability that will let users upload videos in the chat and get an analysis done on them. So far, users have been able to upload pictures and documents for the artificial intelligence chatbot to analyse or scan. However, soon they will also be able to upload videos in the prompt. According to a report by 9To5Google, Gemini will analyse the video and let users ask questions about it. 9To5Google tested the feature by sharing a video and asking the AI bot to describe the video, which it did pretty accurately. It is to be noted that Gemini video upload feature has not yet been rolled out widely. The availability of the feature varies depending on accounts/devices that 9To5Google checked. However, this feature will reportedly be made available to both free and paid users across Android (Google app 16.23 beta) and iOS, as well as 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Pro. The feature is not live on the web interface yet. Video in Gemini: How to use Open the plus (+) menu to upload a file. Select Gallery or Files from the options. If video upload is available for your account, you'll be able to select video files. If not, video files will appear grayed out and cannot be uploaded. In other related news, Google officially rolled out its Gemini 2.5 series of AI models on Tuesday, making them widely accessible. As part of the launch, users can now interact with the stable releases of both Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash. The tech giant has also extended access to the Pro model for users on the free tier of the Gemini platform. Alongside these, Google introduced Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite — touted as the company's fastest and most cost-effective AI model to date.

Xiaomi launches Redmi Pad 2 in India with 11-Inch 2.5K Display, Helio G100-Ultra SoC

Xiaomi has officially unveiled the Redmi Pad 2 in India, expanding its tablet portfolio with a feature-packed device targeted at entertainment and productivity users. The device stands out with an 11-inch high-resolution display, long-lasting battery life, and is the first tablet in the country to arrive with Google's Circle to Search functionality pre-installed. The Redmi Pad 2 sports an 11-inch 2.5K (2,560x1,600 pixels) LCD panel, offering a 90Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 600 nits. The display, which supports 10-bit colour and TÜV Rheinland eye protection certifications, is also equipped with wet-touch technology—ensuring responsiveness even with damp fingers. Encased in a sleek 7.36mm frame, the tablet weighs 510g and comes in two colour variants: blue and grey. Under the hood, the tablet is powered by MediaTek's 6nm Helio G100-Ultra processor, coupled with up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. The device runs on Xiaomi's new Android 15-based HyperOS 2.0, which offers a clean user interface and deeper integration with Google's AI tools, including Gemini AI. A key highlight is native support for Circle to Search, allowing users to search anything on-screen with a simple gesture—making Redmi Pad 2 the first tablet in India to offer this feature out-of-the-box. The tablet houses an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing lens, suitable for video calls and casual photography. Audio performance is enhanced by a quad-speaker setup tuned with Dolby Atmos, ensuring immersive sound quality. Redmi Pad 2 is backed by a substantial 9,000mAh battery with 18W wired charging support, promising extended usage on a single charge. Connectivity options include 4G LTE (on selected models), dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB Type-C port. Additional sensors onboard include an accelerometer, a hall sensor, and a virtual ambient light sensor. The tablet also supports smart pens, broadening its utility for students and professionals alike. The Redmi Pad 2 is priced starting at ₹ 13,999 for the 4GB RAM + 128GB storage Wi-Fi-only model. The Wi-Fi + 4G variants are priced at ₹ 15,999 (6GB + 128GB) and ₹ 17,999 (8GB + 256GB). Sales will begin from 24 June via Xiaomi's official website, Amazon India, and select offline retailers.
