Rupee surges to biggest single-day high in a month, rises 77 paise to close at 85.98 against US dollar as oil prices ease
The Indian rupee appreciated by 77 paise to settle at 85.98 against the US dollar on Tuesday, aided by a fall in the American currency and easing oil prices after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
The domestic currency logged its biggest single-day gain in a month. It opened at 86.1 against the dollar compared to the previous close of 86.75. The currency touched a high of 85.92 during intraday trades.
'Rupee traded strong supported by a sharp 12 per cent drop in crude oil prices, which helped stabilize the currency from its earlier lows near 86.75. Anticipation of renewed FII inflows also added strength to the rupee,' said Jateen Trivedi, VP research analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities.
Brent crude fell to nearly $69 per barrel, down 2.91 per cent.
On Monday, the US President announced that Israel and Iran have agreed on a 'complete' and 'total ceasefire'. However, Israel later claimed that it had identified missiles launched by Iran, which the latter denied.
Market participants will now closely watch the upcoming testimony by the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for further cues. The rupee is expected to trade in a range of 85.75 to 86.25 against the US currency.
Meanwhile, domestic equity market indices, Sensex and Nifty, rallied over 1.3 per cent during intraday trades but pared their gains to close at marginally higher amid Israel's claims of a ceasefire violation by Iran.
The BSE's 30-share Sensex rose 0.19 per cent, or 158.32 points, to close at 82,055.11, while the Nifty 50 gained 0.29 per cent, or 72.45 points, to finish at 25,044.35.
'Initial gains in the domestic market, driven by the ceasefire announcement and sharp drop in crude prices, were short-lived as renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East unsettled investor sentiment,' said Vinod Nair, head of research, Geojit Investments Ltd.
The market also witnessed heightened volatility due to expiry day dynamics.
'Tensions in West Asia resurfaced after Israel accused Iran of violating the ceasefire, prompting a risk-off mood globally. Nevertheless, oil prices extended their decline—Brent near $70 and WTI at $65 per barrel—providing relief to import-heavy economies like India,' said Vikram Kasat, head – advisory, PL Capital.
Mid- and small-cap segments once again proved more resilient, as investors sought value in broader market themes. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 0.71 per cent and Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.72 per cent.
Public sector banks and metal counters witnessed renewed interest, while oil marketing companies remained under pressure.
Nifty Metal climbed 1.01 per cent and Nifty PSU Bank surged 1.46 per cent.
The NSE companies that gained the most included Adani Ports (2.89 per cent), Jio Financial Services (2.85 per cent), Shriram Finance (2.09 per cent) and Grasim Industries (2.06 per cent).

Centre, Gujarat govt join hands to bring high-speed internet to all villages under BharatNet programme
New Delhi: In a major boost to rural connectivity , the Centre in partnership with the Gujarat government , on Tuesday, took a big step towards providing high-speed internet access to villages across the state. With a goal of more than 98% service uptime, the amended BharatNet programme will ensure that even the most remote parts of Gujarat have access to reliable digital platforms, helping to improve education, healthcare, livelihoods, and overall quality of life. A quadripartite agreement was signed in Gandhinagar between the Indian government's Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN), the Gujarat government, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ), and Gujarat Fibre Grid Network Limited (GFGNL). This agreement hands over all BharatNet-related responsibilities in Gujarat to GFGNL and allows the agency to implement the updated scheme under the Amended BharatNet Programme. This partnership marks a significant milestone for Gujarat, which is the first among eight states to adopt the BharatNet project under the state-led model. The state has already received in-principle approval of Rs 5,631 crore for capital expenditure and 10 years of maintenance support for the project. The project aims to connect all 14,654 gram panchayats and non-gram panchayat villages across Gujarat with fast, stable internet. By building a future-ready digital infrastructure, the initiative is expected to support local communities through improved access to digital services . Government departments will be able to connect with citizens more directly, delivering services tailored to the needs of farmers, women, students and entrepreneurs. The network will also open doors for innovation. With fibre connectivity reaching mobile towers, field offices, families and financial businesses, the programme will boost mobile signals, enable real-time governance, offer household broadband, and support rural fintech and startups. Under the broader Amended BharatNet Programme, the government plans to provide optical fibre connectivity to 2.64 lakh gram panchayats and about 3.8 lakh non-gram panchayat villages across the country. The Union Cabinet had approved the scheme on August 4, 2023, with a total programme cost of Rs 1.39 lakh crore. BSNL will serve as the project management agency, with professional partners executing the work under the "Design, Build, Operate, and Maintain model". The project will ensure high-speed internet with a minimum download speed of 25 Mbps for each Fiber-to-the-Home user. Over the next five years, 1.5 crore rural homes, institutions and enterprises across the country are expected to benefit from this massive digital transformation.

Trump accuses Israel and Iran of violating ceasefire, claims total destruction of Iranian nuclear program
Washington, June 24 (UNI) US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that both Israel and Iran violated the ceasefire agreement, and claimed that the Israeli and US strikes had destroyed Iran's nuclear programme. 'Both sides broke the ceasefire,' Trump told reporters before leaving for the NATO summit in The Hague, referring to the US-brokered truce that was announced hours earlier and confirmed by both governments. He did not specify which side acted first but added, 'I didn't like that Israel unloaded right after we agreed to a ceasefire.' Trump's statement contradicted reports from Tel Aviv and Tehran over who initiated strikes after the ceasefire took effect. While Israel said that Iran launched two ballistic missiles on its territory in little less than an hour post ceasefire, Iran denied the accusation and alleged that Tel Aviv continued to fire on its positions for more than an hour after the truce was supposed to begin, Iran International reported. Trump, who has taken credit for brokering the ceasefire, also made claims about the destruction of Iran's nuclear capabilities. 'Iran will never rebuild its nuclear program,' he said. 'Their nuclear capacities are gone.' Trump later said on social media that Israel will not carry out further attacks on Iran and that all military aircraft involved in operations would return home, as the ceasefire between the two countries remains in effect. "All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly 'Plane Wave' to Iran. Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect!" Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform. He also warned Israel not to drop any more bombs on Iran or it would be a violation of the ceasefire he is trying to broker between the two countries. "Israel. Do not drop those bombs. If you do it it is a major violation. Bring your pilots home, now!" Trump wrote in a post on his social media site shortly after he left the White House for a trip to the NATO summit in The Hague. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following a call from Trump to stop the attack, said that a retaliation by Jerusalem was unavoidable, stating that he could not cancel a planned military response against Tehran, following what he described as a 'grave violation' of the newly declared ceasefire. Nonetheless, Netanyahu confirmed that the IDF did not carry out any additional action after Trump told Israel to 'not drop those bombs.' UNI ANV RN

Gold prices in UAE continue to fall, with 22K lowest in weeks: A smart time to buy?
In the UAE, 22K gold dropped to Dh370.25 per gram, its lowest price since June 9/ Image: File Dubai's gold market witnessed a significant overnight plunge, with the price of 22K gold falling by Dh7 to Dh370.25 per gram, the lowest level since June 9, when it touched Dh369.75 briefly. Just eleven days earlier, on June 13, gold was selling for Dh383.50 per gram, meaning the current rate is Dh13.25 lower, a sizable dip in less than two weeks. Prices of other gold variants have followed suit: 24K gold dropped to Dh403.50 per gram, down from around Dh404 just the night before. 22K slipped further to Dh373.75 21K fell to Dh358.00 18K declined to Dh307.25 The downward trend in gold prices isn't isolated to the UAE.. In international markets, spot gold fell sharply by $80 an ounce, now trading around $3,299.92, a 2.4% drop as of early Tuesday. Gold futures for August delivery, which reflect what traders expect prices to be in the near future, also slid to $3,322.40 an ounce, roughly 3.8% below the record high reached on June 13. The slump didn't stop there. Prices dipped further later in the day, with spot gold dropping another 1.5% to $3,315.20, its lowest level since June 10. US gold futures followed suit, falling 1.8% to $3,330.80. On the technical side, which investors often watch to predict market movement, gold has now fallen below its 20-day average, a sign that the short-term trend has weakened. Another key indicator, the Relative Strength Index (RSI), also slipped below 50, something that hasn't happened since mid-May, when prices briefly dropped to $3,120. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Stocks for Monthly Dividends Seeking Alpha Read Now Undo While these signals can be complex, they generally point to a market that's losing upward momentum, at least for now. Why Is Gold Falling Now? This slump in gold prices comes amid a broader cooling of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, one of the key drivers of gold's recent rally. A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, announced by US President Donald Trump on his social media platform, is at the heart of this development. The announcement followed weeks of back-and-forth retaliatory strikes between the two nations, which had previously driven investors to gold as a safe haven. With fears of wider regional conflict now subsiding, investor appetite for gold is retreating. 'Gold retreated as haven demand ebbed after Trump said Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire,' Saxo Bank analysts noted. Although the truce is considered fragile, with minor violations reportedly occurring, financial markets are currently pricing in a lower geopolitical risk, triggering the gold pullback. In addition, global investors are shifting back to riskier assets, contributing further to gold's downward pressure. What Experts Are Saying: Key Support Levels and Outlook Despite the current downturn, analysts are closely watching technical levels and broader economic signals to gauge gold's next move. 'While the pullback is controlled, $3,330 is a critical support level. A break below could signal a deeper correction,' said Daniela Sabin Hathorn, senior market analyst at She also noted that while the immediate outlook points to more downside risk, the long-term fundamentals remain intact, including continued geopolitical uncertainty and persistent inflation concerns, both of which support gold's appeal over time. Traders and analysts are also watching for signals from the US Federal Reserve. Fed Chair Jerome Powell's upcoming testimony is expected to offer cues on future US interest rates. Any signs of monetary easing could lend new support to gold prices by making non-yielding assets more attractive. What This Means for UAE Buyers For buyers in the UAE, whether investing in gold bars or purchasing jewellery, this price drop could represent a timely buying opportunity. A Dh13 per gram drop translates to significant savings on bulk purchases, especially with wedding season and gifting occasions on the horizon. However, experts urge caution and close attention to market signals. Gold has a history of rebounding quickly, especially when global uncertainties re-emerge. 'If geopolitical risks continue to ease, gold prices could soften more in the short term,' analysts said, highlighting the importance of timing purchases. In Summary Dubai 22K gold is down to Dh370.25/g, a Dh13.25 fall since June 13 Spot gold fell globally to $3,299.92/oz, down 2.4%, and as low as $3,315.20 later in the day Israel-Iran ceasefire announcement by President Trump eased safe-haven demand Critical support level at $3,330, with possible deeper correction if breached Fed policy signals may shift the trend again, offering potential new support For now, UAE shoppers might find value in today's prices, but should stay alert to fast-moving global events that could reverse this trend just as quickly.
