SMG flood mitigation initiative increases Klang River capacity by 18%

The Sun18 hours ago

SHAH ALAM: A major flood mitigation initiative under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project has successfully increased the Klang River's water capacity by 18 per cent, covering a 31-kilometre stretch from the river mouth to the Petaling Jaya-Kuala Lumpur border.
Syaiful Azmen Nordin, managing director of Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) appointed as the master developer of the SMG project, said the improved river section spans two of four key project blocks - from the Shah Alam-Klang border to the Shah Alam-Puchong border, and from the river mouth to Bandar Klang - identified as Blocks 3 and 1, respectively.
He said that the state government, through its agencies, is targeting a total increase of at least 40 per cent in river capacity by the end of this year after past data revealed that Klang River, especially in Selangor, could not accommodate upstream water overflow during heavy rains.
'Block 3, which covers flood-prone areas such as Sri Muda, Kota Kemuning, Section 17, and Section 24, requires special attention, as these are the most affected zones in recent flood events,' he told reporters after a site visit to the flood mitigation project in Kota Kemuning today.
The river widening and dredging works for the remaining two blocks - from Bandar Klang to Bandar Sultan Sulaiman (Block 2), and from the Shah Alam-Puchong border to Petaling Jaya-Kuala Lumpur (Block 4) - will begin next year, covering an additional 28.8 km.
According to Syaiful Azmen, construction on Blocks 1 and 3 is expected to be completed by year-end, after which a two-year enhancement and monitoring phase will begin, also managed by LLSB.
To date, around 94,000 tonnes of waste have been extracted from the river, at an estimated handling cost of RM20 million, he said.
'That RM20 million could've been used for other development initiatives, if only there was greater public awareness about river cleanliness,' he added.

Government committed to ease housing burden of low-income families

Published on: Tuesday, June 17, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 17, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Jannie officiating the launch of the RMR unit. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring access to affordable housing through continued support for the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) programme by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB). Kapayan Assemblywoman Jannie Lasimbang said initiatives like RMR are vital in helping low-income families who already own land but cannot afford to build a home on their own. Advertisement 'These houses are worth RM85,000, but with SPNB's RM20,000 subsidy, families only need to repay around RM300 a month. That makes it very affordable, especially for young families,' she said during a press conference after officiating the RMR 2025 handover ceremony at Kg Kapayan here, on Monday. This of the programme saw ten recipients from across Penampang, which are five receiving house keys and five others issued offer letters for homes scheduled to be built later this year. 'All ten recipients today are young people. Many of them dream of owning a house, but land and housing prices in places like Kapayan are extremely high. 'One family told me they wouldn't have been able to afford building a home on their own. You could see how happy they were and we were happy for them too,' Jannie said. Jannie noted that most recipients were building on inherited family land, which eased land acquisition costs but not construction. She said the State Government continues to prioritise housing, infrastructure and social well-being through its annual budget planning. 'Housing remains a major concern, especially with older, unsafe homes still found in urban areas. That's why programmes like RMR are necessary. 'We don't just make policies. We deliver them where they matter,' she said. She also encouraged landowners to apply for the RMR scheme, citing the long waiting lists under federal programmes such as PPR. 'If you have land and some savings, apply through SPNB. It's a real opportunity,' she said. Currently, more than 2,568 RMR units have been built in Sabah, contributing to a national total of 71,847 units delivered under the programme. 'This isn't just about building houses. It's about building better lives for our people,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 'Your efforts, especially under the Belt and Road Initiative, have brought meaningful economic benefits to Sabah in investment, tourism and agri-tech,' he said. Its President, Dr Oh Ei Sun meanwhile praised Tun Musa who encouraged the association to formalise efforts in 2012 after aiding with Chinese VVIP arrivals. 'Thirteen years later, we are deeply honoured to have Tun with us again, symbolising a new chapter in our journey. Shining a spotlight on those who make a difference

McDonald's Malaysia senior vice-president and chief impact officer Melati Abdul Hai said SGHA is an ideal platform to honour selfless individuals who quietly uplift their communities. 'At McDonald's, we serve not only food but also people. SGHA really resonates with us because it celebrates unsung heroes – those who have committed themselves at a personal level to doing good in their communities. ALSO READ: Celebrating unsung heroes 'The award is a fantastic platform to recognise these individuals who give their time and effort to making a difference,' she said in an interview yesterday. Melati highlighted that McDonald's Malaysia has long been involved in community initiatives through its Program Komuniti @ McDonald's, which benefits over 10,000 people annually at the grassroots level. This commitment, she said, makes the company's involvement in SGHA a natural fit, as both aim to foster unity and bring communities together. 'We're particularly drawn to individuals committed to doing grassroots community work, as it mirrors our own core values at McDonald's. 'When acts of kindness come from the heart and people commit to helping others and uniting the community, it truly goes a long way. That's the Malaysia we envision,' she added. Now in its 11th year, SGHA returns under the theme 'Recognising the Unsung, Inspiring the Next', continuing its mission to honour Malaysians who make a difference through selfless action. 'We hope the award reminds Malaysians that you don't need a title, platform or big budget to make a difference. You just need a caring heart. 'For the recipients, we hope this recognition validates their efforts and encourages them to keep going, knowing that their work matters and is being seen,' said Melati. She also expressed hope that the award would inspire younger generations to step forward and take the initiative in giving back to their communities. 'To the youth, we hope this serves as an inspiration. We want to build a Malaysia that cares for its society, a community united through integrity and diversity,' she added. This year also marks the debut of the McDonald's Caring Hearts Award, a special category honouring individuals or grassroots groups whose heartfelt acts of kindness have uplifted lives in profound and lasting ways. The new category celebrates Malaysians whose selfless efforts create real impact in the lives of others, not for recognition, but out of a deep commitment to community well-being.
