He's a combination of MS Dhoni and Glenn McGrath]," an elated Satish Rana, Anshul's childhood coach, told TimesofIndia.com in an interview.
Satish's phone hasn't stopped ringing — multiple missed calls and a flood of messages — but the coach is entertaining everyone with a smile and energy in his voice. The 24-year-old Haryana pacer has been called up as cover for the final two Tests of the five-match series.
With left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh ruled out of the fourth Test after injuring his bowling hand during a training session, and Akash Deep picking up a groin niggle, along with allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy being ruled out of the remainder of the series, speedster Kamboj is set to receive his maiden Test cap on Wednesday at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Kamboj was with his family when his phone rang. It was the team management, ringing in to inform he was being added to the squad. Known for his calm and composed demeanour, Kamboj shared the news with his coach and went back to some bowling drills before flying to England.
"He came and met me. He was happy. Ek hi sapna tha uska — India ki Test jersey pehenna. Jab bhi puchta, kya karega — World Cup khelega? Kis bowler ki tarah banega? Killiyan ukhaadne pasand hai ya LBW? Hamesha ek hi baat bolta tha — 'Sir, pehle Test cricket khelna lambe samay tak.
Baaki sab mere liye next hai' [He had only one dream — to wear the India Test jersey. Whenever I asked him — will you play the World Cup? Which bowler do you want to be like? Do you like 'destroying' stumps or getting LBWs? He would always say: 'Sir, first I want to play Test cricket for a long time.
Everything else comes after that]," said coach Rana.

Before leaving for England, Kamboj visited the OPS Rana Brothers Academy in Karnal — where his cricket journey began at the age of 11 — bowed to the pitch, crouched and brought his forehead to it, and then set off.

The fourth Test, which begins on Wednesday, is crucial for both teams. India can level the series or England can take an unassailable lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. And Kamboj will shoulder significant bowling responsibility alongside Jasprit Bumrah and
.
Kamboj was part of the India A squad that played two unofficial Tests ahead of the England series. He picked up four wickets in the second match in Northampton.
Poll
Do you think Anshul Kamboj can handle the pressure of his debut match?
Absolutely Maybe Not sure
"When he hit the nets and met everyone there, he called me. He said, 'Sir, I met Bumrah, I met Siraj.' Gautam Gambhir sir made him feel so comfortable in such a short time. Everyone welcomed him and became friendly very quickly. Gambhir told him, 'You are part of the team. Be calm and talk to everyone.' Soon, he had a chat with Bumrah and then Siraj. He also spoke to Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep," Rana shared.

"Bolta hai wo, 'Sir, conditions pata hain mujhe.
India A khela hai maine wahan.' Wo desperate hai middle mein jaake apni team ke liye perform karne ke liye. Bachha hai, Gambhir sir aur Bumrah ka guidance mil raha hai usko. Usne dono se kaafi sawal kiye. Finally, wo wahi hai jahan hamesha se hona chahta tha [He said, 'Sir, I know the conditions. I've played there for India A.' He's desperate to get out there and perform for the team.
He's still a kid, and he's getting valuable guidance from Gambhir sir and Bumrah.
He asked them a lot of questions. Finally, he's where he always wanted to be]," Rana added.
"Gambhir sir ne usko red ball laake diya and bola 'go ahead' [Gambhir sir handed him the red ball and said, 'Go ahead']. That's how he started with the team. Aap dekhna kya karega wo Old Trafford mein. Main jyada hype nahi karna chahta. Sir jhukake coach aur seniors ki sunna, aur usko apne game mein apply karna — yeh Anshul ko aata hai. Acha ladka hai [Just watch what he does at Old Trafford.
I don't want to overhype it. But bowing his head, listening to coaches and seniors, and applying that in his game — that's Anshul's strength.
He's a good kid]," the coach said.
'Calmness like Dhoni, aggression like McGrath'
Kamboj also got a chance to learn from Australian fast-bowling legend Glenn McGrath during his time at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). From run-up to landing, generating pace and swing, hitting the deck, and maintaining the right line and length — Kamboj soaked in McGrath's advice like a sponge.
"He is a big fan of Glenn McGrath. Bowls just like him. He watches McGrath's videos, especially his wicket-taking spells, and tries to apply that in his own bowling. Meeting McGrath at the NCA was a dream come true for him. It changed his life and completely transformed his approach to bowling," Rana said.
"I remember him saying, 'McGrath sir says the smoother your action and release, the longer your career will be.' He really admires McGrath a lot," Rana added.

"Jaise McGrath ki aankhon mein aggression tha, waise hi iske eyes mein hai. Jitna eyes mein aggression hai, usse zyada bowling mein hai [Just like McGrath had aggression in his eyes, he does too. In fact, there's even more aggression in his bowling than in his eyes]," the coach said with a laugh.
The 24-year-old was part of the Mumbai Indians squad in 2024 and was later picked by Chennai Super Kings for the 2025 season. He played eight matches for CSK in IPL 2025 and claimed 10 wickets.
"He has learned the art of staying calm from MS Dhoni, especially under pressure. He's naturally a calm-headed person. Dhoni advised him to remain composed in all situations and never lose his cool. They even discussed playing Test cricket — Dhoni told him to stay fit and keep things simple," Rana revealed.
"Spending time at CSK taught him a lot. MS Dhoni has played a significant role in shaping his career," Rana concluded.

KL Rahul surpasses Virat Kohli, joins Tendulkar, Dravid in iconic run-scoring club during Manchester Test
KL Rahul became only the fourth Indian batter to breach the 1000-run mark in Tests against England in England, surpassing Virat Kohli's tally of 976 on the first day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. The 32-year-old opener continued his excellent form on the tour, reaching another milestone during a knock that also saw him cross 400 runs in the series. Manchester: India's KL Rahul plays a shot on day one of the fourth test cricket match between India and England(PTI) Rahul, who has already struck two centuries on this tour, one at Edgbaston in the second Test and another at Lord's in the third, is now behind only Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar in terms of most Test runs by an Indian in England. Tendulkar leads the pack with 1575 runs, followed by Dravid (1376) and Gavaskar (1152). Rahul's composed batting has been one of the constants for India in an otherwise see-saw series. India, trailing 1-2 in the five-match contest, were put into bat on a slightly green-tinged Old Trafford surface after England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl first. Shubman Gill's side featured three changes from the last match, with Anshul Kamboj receiving his maiden Test cap as he replaced the injured Akash Deep, while Sai Sudharsan came in for Karun Nair. All-rounder Shardul Thakur also returned to the XI, replacing Nitish Kumar Reddy. Kamboj, a 23-year-old right-arm quick from Haryana, was a surprise inclusion over the more experienced Prasidh, but had impressed the team management and selector Gautam Gambhir during the recent training sessions. Rahul's consistency in Anderson-Tendulkar trophy Rahul, meanwhile, held firm in the opening session of the day alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal even as the English pacers extracted some movement early on. His discipline with the bat throughout the series, particularly in the Lord's Test where he held firm in both innings as wickets fell on the other end, was commendable. With centuries at Edgbaston and Lord's already under his belt, Rahul has emerged as a key part of India's batting on this tour. India will hope Rahul's form continues to be the anchor in their bid to level the series 2-2 and take it to a decider at The Oval.

"Karun Nair Who Was Down...": Shubman Gill Criticised By Ex-India Star For Dropping Star In 4th Test
The Indian cricket team saw three changes to its playing XI against England for the fourth Test in Machester that started on Wednesday. Seamer Anshul Kamboj was handed a Test debut while B Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur were also been included in India's playing XI as England won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Sudharsan came in for Karun Nair, while Shardul replaced Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is ruled out of the series due to a left knee injury. The reason for dropping Nair was a poor run of form. He made a coeback to the national team after eight years but in the first three Tests could tally only 131 at an average of below 22. Former Indian cricket team star Mohammad Kaif was critical of Gill for not backing Nair. "Today was Shubman Gill 's chance to back karun who was down but deserved one more chance. He should have picked Karun Nair. Chance missed to earn the respect when it comes to making tough decisions as a leader," he wrote on X. Today was Shubman Gill's chance to back karun who was down but deserved one more chance. He should have picked Karun Nair. Chance missed to earn the respect when it comes to making tough decisions as a leader. — Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) July 23, 2025 England are leading the five-match series 2-1 after a dramatic 22-run win in the third Test at Lord's. Kamboj, who is now the 318th Test cricketer to play for India, replaces Akash Deep, who is down with a groin injury, he picked in third Test at Lord's. Notably, Anil Kumble was the last Indian cricketer to make his Test debut in Manchester. Coincidentally, both Kumble and Kamboj have a 10-wicket haul in an innings in first-class cricket. The three changes have meant that India go in with four seam-bowling options plus left-arm spin of Ravindra Jadeja. "I was actually a bit confused. The surface looks pretty good; a good toss to lose. I think the way we have played in the last three matches has been outstanding... it's just small, crunch moments we have lost. All of the Test matches have been very intense, going up to the last hour of the final day. You need a bit of a break. All three Tests were intense. Looks like a good surface. Nice and hard. There's some forecast around for the four-five days," said India skipper Shubman Gill. On the other hand, England have one change; injured Shoaib Bashir has made way for Liam Dawson who returns to the Test side after eight years. "Some decent overhead conditions here for bowling, so that's what we're going to do. We've had a good break between the Lord's Test and this one, an opportunity for everyone to get those batteries recharged and hit the ground running here. "Everyone left everything out on that outfield at Lord's on that last day, it was a phenomenal team effort. The cricket so far has been absolutely outstanding from both teams. We have been going toe-to-toe, there's not been a lot between the teams and hopefully we play some good cricket this week and come out on the right side of things," said skipper Ben Stokes, who won the toss for the fourth straight time.
