Olympian Asher Hong rolls to second national title at the U.S. gymnastics championships

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Asher Hong cruised to his second national title in men's gymnastics on Saturday, pulling away from the field for an easy victory at the U.S. Championships. The 21-year-old Hong, part of the five-man team that earned bronze at the Paris Olympics last summer, posted a two-day total of 170.020 to win easily despite a rare miscue on the high bar during the first rotation on Saturday. Not that it mattered. Hong became the 13th man to win multiple national titles with ease. The 2023 champion entered with a massive lead of over four points thanks to six steady routines Thursday. Hong finished with the top scores on floor exercise, vault and still rings, events where the rising Stanford senior's power easily translates. The real race was for second, where Frederick Richard 's two-day total of 162.555 was just enough to slip by Fuzzy Benas at 162.310. Richard managed to finish runner-up despite voluntarily taking 0.6 points in deductions for wearing a nonconforming uniform on parallel bars, high bar, pommel horse and rings. Rather than don the stirrup pants that have long been the norm, Richard wore gray shorts with matching leggings underneath, a small sacrifice the 21-year-old says he's willing to make while competing at domestic elite meets in hopes of making the sport a little 'cooler' to potential fans. Colt Walker was fourth in the final meet before the world championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, in October. Two-time national champion Brody Malone, who skipped floor exercise and vault to put a little less stress on his surgically repaired right knee, placed first on parallel bars, second on rings and third on pommel horse to put him in a strong position to return to worlds for the first time since 2022. Stephen Nedoroscik, the pommel horse specialist who became a viral sensation while winning two bronze medals in Paris, was fifth in his return to competition following a lengthy post-Olympic break that included a stint on 'Dancing With the Stars.' While Hong, Richard, Malone and Nedoroscik are pressing on, the fifth member of the 2024 Olympic team — Paul Juda — announced his retirement Saturday night. ___ AP sports:

Taylor Ward homers and drives in 3 runs in the Angels' 7-4 victory over the Tigers

DETROIT (AP) — Taylor Ward homered and fell a triple short of the cycle, driving in three runs to help the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 7-4 on Saturday night. Ward had an RBI double in the first, singled and scored in the fourth and hit a two-run homer in the fifth. He grounded out in the seventh. Angeles starter Yusei Kikuchi (6-7) allowed four runs in five innings. Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 21st save and his career-best 20th consecutive outing without allowing an earned run. Detroit's Charlie Morton (7-10) matched a season high with 10 strikeouts, but the 41-year-old allowed six runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the first on Ward's RBI double, and the Tigers got two in the second on Andy Ibáñez's RBI single and Jake Rogers' sacrifice fly. Morton struck out seven straight after Ward's double, with Mike Trout snapping the streak with a leadoff groundout in the fourth. Ward singled, Morton hit Yoán Moncada, and Jo Adell hit a three-run homer to make it 4-2. The Tigers tied it in the bottom of the inning on Matt Vierling's sacrifice fly and Gleyber Torres's RBI double. Ward ended Morton's night with a two-run homer in the fifth. Luis Rengifo made it 7-4 with a homer in the eighth. Key moment Trailing 6-4, the Tigers had runners on first and second with no one out in the sixth, but Kikuchi struck out pinch-hitter Kerry Carpenter and got Torres to ground out. Key stat Moncada was Morton's 11th hit batter on the season. Morton has hit at least 10 batters in 12 seasons and leads all active pitchers with 198. Up next Detroit RHP Casey Mize (10-4, 3.50 ERA) was set to face RHP Jack Kochanowicz (3-9, 5.85) on Sunday in the series finale. ___ AP MLB:

49ers fans kick off preseason with high hopes and a mother's story of resilience

Optimism is running high among die-hard San Francisco 49ers fans as the new NFL season begins, despite the team missing the playoffs last year. Eight months after their last game, the 49ers hosted their preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, and many fans are already talking about a potential Super Bowl run. Among them was Lori Garmany, a superfan whose excitement for the game came despite a deeply personal tragedy. "This is my first day that I've been out all day from the hospital," Garmany said. "I would feel so guilty. But all three of my boys were like, 'Mom, we're here at the hospital with him. You go, enjoy yourself.'" For more than 60 days, Garmany has been by her son Jeff's side at Valley Medical Center. On June 9, the 35-year-old was riding his motorcycle to work when, according to San Jose police, a car made an illegal U-turn in front of him, causing a crash that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Police later arrested the driver who left the scene, but Garmany says her son's life will never be the same after the hit-and-run crash. "He was left on the ground to die. Thank God he's alive," she said. "We give all our glory to God. And he actually is moving some fingers, some toes. So we're praying for a miracle." Saturday's game gave Garmany a rare escape from the hospital — a few hours to focus on something joyful. She arrived in her red 49ers-themed car, one of the first fans in line that morning. "I just met Robert, I just met these guys today," she said with a smile. "You can come to a 49er tailgating, and you can have a family." That family spirit was alive throughout Levi's Stadium, with fans brimming with optimism despite last year's losing record. "I've been waiting since we walked out here the last game," said Jesse Mendez. "It's here. I'm ready to go. I'm ready to get out there to scream and yell." "I'm happy. All my Sundays are booked," added another fan, Cruz Salazar. "Don't call me, don't text me — I'm not home." With Levi's Stadium set to host the Super Bowl this season, fans are daring to dream about seeing their team win it all on home turf. "It's a dream come true if we do win a Super Bowl here," said Jose Salazar. "It'd be amazing," Mendez agreed. "To have home-field advantage for the Super Bowl would be something else." Garmany believed miracles can happen, for both her team and her son's recovery. "Mark my words, we are going to take the season, we are going to come back with a vengeance and we're going to win this Super Bowl for The City of Santa Clara and the Bay," she said. Jeff and his brothers planned to watch the game from his hospital room, cheering for the 49ers from afar. Garmany laughed that it might get a little loud in there.
