Gig workers postpone auto, cab strike after commuters' harrowing experience

Time of India19-07-2025
Pune: The Indian Gig Workers' Front on Saturday evening suspended the ongoing strike of cabs and autorickshaws operating on applications till Tuesday, after leaving many commuters, including those arriving at the airport on Saturday morning, hassled.
Keshav Kshirsagar, the president of the front, said, "We have a meeting on Tuesday with senior officials of the state transport department. If its decisions don't meet our expectations, the strike will resume."
Several commuters had a harrowing experience on roads on Friday and in the early hours of Saturday. Cabs and autos were hard to come by. The fortunate ones getting vehicles had to fork out double the average fare.
Worse, a few got a taste of unruly drivers' misbehaviour.

Pratik Chhoriyaan, an IT professional, landed in Pune in the early hours of Saturday. "People were stranded at Aeromall's first and second floor outside the Pune airport because of the strike. Some auto and cab drivers on duty demanded over Rs1,000 for an 8km distance."
Aviral Bhatnagar, an investor, wrote on X, "Pune's having Ola/Uber/Rapido cab drivers' strike to raise prices.
What earlier cost Rs350 now costs Rs700. One asked me to pay Rs1,000 instead of Rs300. In the quest for maximising profits, cab drivers are killing the golden goose of cab aggregators."
Dinesh Tiwari, a resident of Wanowrie, struggled to find a cab to go to his office. "My car went for servicing two days ago, and it has been a big challenge finding a cab or an auto. I have been paying Rs300-400 to travel a short distance of 7km."
Anvesh Kulkarni, a resident of Hadapsar, tried to book a cab multiple times on Saturday morning but failed. "I had to take my family to Koregaon Park for a function. We tried booking autorickshaws and cabs for an hour, but failed. Finally, I called up an autorickshaw driver known to us. He dropped us for Rs450," he said.
Dilip Sonawane, a cab driver on these aggregators since 2015, said, "We are demanding the updated fares the RTO has allowed us to charge.
Since the same fares are not showing up on the app, customers do not want to pay the revised amount. Most customers say they will pay the new rates if these reflect on the app. Ola, Uber and Rapido are refusing to update the rates. This is causing major confusion among commuters."
Prakash Rajguru, the president of LV Antaral Autorickshaw Sanghatana, who operates prepaid autorickshaws from the Pune airport, said their business revived in the past two days after months of stalemate.
"The strike left flyers with no option but to come to us. We have done brisk business. Each of us made multiple trips. We charged fares as per the RTA-approved pre-paid rates. Flyers with more luggage hired two or even three autorickshaws because they didn't have a choice," Rajguru said.
Another prepaid auto driver talked about an incident in the early morning hours. "A passenger negotiating with an auto driver was stunned because he was asked for a fare of Rs2,000 for going to Hinjewadi-phase-1. When I saw him moving towards the AeroMall, I requested him to book a ride with us from the counter. He did that. We gave him a receipt of Rs525, and a colleague of mine took him to his destination," he said.

SAIL readies Rs 7,500-cr capex for FY26

State-owned steel maker Sail is looking to spend Rs7,500 crore as capex in the ongoing fiscal, 25 per cent higher from FY25, to expand capacities across plants, a senior company official said. SAIL, which is India's largest steel player in public sector, is in expansion mode and working to scale up its overall capacity to 35 million tonne (MnT) by 2030 from a combined 20 MnT capacity of its five integrated plants (ISPs) spread across Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, at an outlay of nearly Rs1 lakh crore. 'Capex last year was close to Rs6,000 crore. And this year, we have kept a target of Rs7,500 crore throughout the year, which is a higher target,' Sail Director, Finance, Ashok Kumar Panda told PTI responding to a question on company's investment plans. The capex has already been approved by the board and SAIL is confident to achieve it by end of the fiscal. In the April-June, SAIL has already spent Rs1,642 crore, which is more than the target set for the first quarter, he said. Sharing details of the expansion plan, Panda said tendering activities are ongoing at IISCO Steel Plant (West Bengal), where a 4.5 MTPA expansion is planned. The plant has a current capacity of 2.5 MT. At Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), a brownfield expansion plan is in progress to increase output to 3.09 MTPA from current 2.2 MTPA, along with a greenfield expansion. For other plants, expansion plans are under consideration. The expansion plans for Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh, Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand, and Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Odisha are being worked out accordingly. When asked about the expectations from the coming quarters for the company, Panda said: 'You already know we reported a multi-fold rise in consolidated net profit (Rs885.93 cr) in Q1 driven by improved operational efficiency, better cash flow and strong growth in sales volume.' Better cashflow has resulted in substantial reduction in borrowings. Sail will work towards that to maintain the momentum in the remaining three quarters as well, the Director said. Sail's saleable steel production (finished steel) during the quarter stood at 4.7 million tonnes as against 4.2 million tonne in the year-ago period, registering a growth of 12 per cent.

Uber says riders filed fake receipts in over 100 sex assault cases in US

Uber said it found more than 100 instances in which passengers who claimed its drivers sexually assaulted or harassed them offered bogus or doctored receipts to prove ridership, or did not explain their inability to provide a Wednesday court filing, Uber urged US District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco to order 21 plaintiffs with suspect receipts to justify why their claims should not be dismissed, and 90 plaintiffs with no receipts to either provide them or "non-boilerplate" reasons for their least 11 law firms represent the various plaintiffs, court papers show. They were not accused of wrongdoing. Uber is trying to reduce its liability in nationwide federal litigation comprising more than 2,450 lawsuits alleging driver misconduct. The San Francisco-based company faces several hundred additional lawsuits in San Francisco Superior Court.'We take any allegations seriously and are reviewing Uber's latest claims," lawyers Rachel Abrams, Sarah London and Roopal Luhana, who lead the federal litigation on behalf of the plaintiffs, said in a joint added that Uber knows some sexual assault victims may lack receipts because other people ordered their rides, and the possible elevated risk of being assaulted that guest passengers face makes Uber's focus on documentation "more troubling."Uber has maintained it should not be liable for criminal conduct by drivers it connects with passengers, and that its background checks and disclosures were July 8, Breyer dismissed some fraud and liability claims that were based on ads promoting Uber's ride-sharing service as a safe alternative to Wednesday's filing, Uber said some fake receipts appear to have been generated through third-party said some receipts contained math errors or bogus surcharges, changed female driver names to male names, were time-stamped before rides occurred, had stray marks, or used formatting that does not match its plaintiff submitted two receipts for a single ride, while two plaintiffs submitted different versions of the same receipt, the company said."Nothing is more critical to the integrity of our judicial system than honesty," Uber said. "It is difficult to conceive an act of misconduct graver than the outright fabrication of evidence that plaintiffs here undertook."- EndsTrending Reel

Trump Trouble? Maybe Not

You might've heard that U.S. President Donald Trump is upset with India again. He's said some strong things and added a big 25% tax (called a tariff) on many things India sells to America. But don't worry – this doesn't mean disaster. Let's break it down in a way that makes sense. What's Happening? Trump has been saying confusing things. One moment he's angry at India's trade rules, the next moment he says talks are still happening. He even made fun of India's and Russia's economies, saying they can 'go down together.' But he hasn't clearly said what extra punishment (penalty) he'll give India for buying oil from Russia. That's why many people think he's bluffing – acting tough without a clear plan. What Should India Do? India can still make a deal with the U.S. It should look at how other countries like Brazil, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union made their deals with Trump. Brazil : Trump added a big tariff (50%) on some Brazilian products. But Brazil made smart choices. It made sure its important exports like planes, metals, fertilizers, and even orange juice didn't get taxed. How? Brazilian businesses convinced American companies to support them. India can try the same trick — get U.S. companies who depend on Indian goods to ask Trump not to tax them. South Korea : Trump told Korea to pay money to reduce the tariff from 25% to 15%. Korea agreed to invest $350 billion in the U.S., which helped them keep their rice and beef markets safe. India could try something similar since food trade (like dairy and farming) is a big issue in talks. Japan and EU : They got the 15% rate by promising big investments too. What About Russia and Oil? One of Trump's biggest complaints is that India buys a lot of oil from Russia — about 35-40% now. But until a few years ago, it was less than 1%. That means India can reduce how much it buys from Russia if needed. Also, Russian oil discounts aren't as big anymore — they've dropped from $20 per barrel to just $2. But this isn't just about money. It's also about geopolitics — how countries deal with each other in terms of power and security. For example, Russia's weapons (S-400 missiles) helped India defend itself in a battle, not America's. So India needs to think carefully. Bottom Line Trump talks a lot, but that doesn't mean the door is closed. India still has a chance to make a good trade deal. It just needs to: Stay calm, Be smart like Brazil, Korea, and Japan, Get U.S. businesses on its side, And make careful choices when it comes to oil and security. So, no need to panic – the game isn't over yet. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email Disclaimer Views expressed above are the author's own.
