Man jailed over dog theft hammer attack on woman in Aspley

BBC News5 hours ago

A man has been jailed after he launched a hammer attack on a woman and stole her English bulldog.Wearing a balaclava, Julian Mead repeatedly struck her with the weapon on her driveway in Bells Lane, Aspley, Nottingham, at about 21:30 BST on 1 October 2024, police said.Mead, 41, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and burglary following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court in April. On Thursday, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with another five years on extended licence on release.
Officers said the woman was struck on the head with the weapon and suffered repeated blows to the body after she fell to the floor. Her partner intervened after she crawled across the road to escape. The attack caused a punctured lung, broken shoulder blade, fractured hand, broken ribs and teeth, and required stitches for numerous head wounds.Police said at some point during the incident, the victim's English bulldog, called Winnie, was stolen from the home and had never been traced. In what was believed to be a legal first, Mead was originally charged with the new offence of "dognapping", but this was later changed to burglary.
Tracing Winnie
Mead, of Welstead Avenue, Aspley, was identified as the attacker and arrested a short time later, police said.Investigations revealed he was known to the victim due to a previous disagreement. He had denied the charges and was found not guilty of attempted murder.Det Sgt Paul Crofts, said: "This was an isolated but extremely violent attack on a woman as she left her home."It appears Mead had a previous grievance against the victim and chose to turn up outside her home armed with a dangerous weapon, attack her and steal her pet dog."The victim was left with some very nasty injuries, and given the ferocity of the blows, the outcome could have been even more serious."Despite attempts to trace Winnie, she has not been recovered, so I'd urge anyone with information about her whereabouts to get in touch without delay."

Pensioner, 80, who attacked his 76-year-old neighbour with a hammer then went home, grabbed a knife and stabbed him to death is found guilty of murder

A pensioner who attacked his neighbour with a hammer before going home to grab a knife to stab him to death has been found guilty of murder. Peter Kindell, 80, brutally set up John Jones, 76, with the hammer in the lobby of a block of flats in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, at around 4.30pm on January 3. The pensioner fled back to his flat when two brave women intervened and stayed with Mr Jones whilst they called an ambulance. However, Kindell returned with a knife as they were speaking to the 999 call handler and savagely stabbed Mr Jones to death. Kindell was arrested shortly afterwards and made no comment to most questions asked by police. In court, he claimed he had killed Mr Jones due to diminished responsibility, but the prosecution did not accept his defence. Instead, they argued the killing was a reaction to a long-running dispute between Kindell and Mr Jones. They also highlighted evidence which showed there was research and planning from Kindell. Detective Inspector Nick Hind, of Thames Valley Police's Major Crime Unit, said: 'Whatever the reasons were for Kindell's actions on 3 January, there can be no excuses for what he did. 'He has now been held accountable and been found guilty of murder. He will be sentenced in due course. 'John Jones was a well-loved man, and his death caused great distress to his loved ones and his friends. 'I would like to publicly acknowledge the courage and selflessness of the two women who went to the aid of Mr Jones, and also to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Mr Jones's family. 'They have all been remarkably dignified in light of this horrendous incident, and have supported our investigation team throughout. 'I know that no outcome will serve as solace to them, but I hope that they are able to move on with their lives in the best way that they can, and I'd ask that their privacy is respected whilst they attempt to do so.' Kindell will be sentenced at the same court on a date to be confirmed.

Coronation Street's Gary Windass left fighting for his life as soap FINALLY reveals what happened to 'missing' villager - and Maria is left 'spiralling'

Coronation Street 's Gary Windass is left fighting for his life as the soap finally reveals what happened to the 'missing' villager - leaving Maria 'spiralling'. The mystery began on the ITV soap when the builder (Mikey North) left Weatherfield, supposedly to stay with his mother for a while. It was to escape neighbour Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hegarty) blackmailing him, after she leant in and kissed him recently, leaving him stunned. She promised she would keep quiet about the kiss - including to Gary's partner Maria (Samia Longchambon) - as long as 'he did what she said', with her exact motive unclear. Gary and Maria are in a rough spot in their relationship at the moment so when he left town for a mysterious reason, she was upset but quickly brushed it off. But when he did not return for her son Liam's (Charlie Wrenshall) birthday, alarm bells started ringing in her head as she wondered where he had gone. And Friday's episode will reveal he has not left town at all - but is actually in a coma at Weatherfield General, fighting for his life, with his family and friends totally unaware. The revelation comes after Maria gets so worried for Gary's safety, she reports him as a missing person to police detective Kit Green (Jacob Roberts). It is then she discovers from him there is an unidentified coma patient at the local hospital. Kit assures Maria it is not Gary - but it is a sign even he has been taken in by Gary's mystery attacker. It turns out the reason why no one knows Gary is at the hospital is the unknown criminal has tried to cover their tracks by giving the wrong name for him and claiming to be his next of kin. As Gary remains in critical condition, the upcoming episodes will unravel how he ended up in hospital - and exactly who put him there. Samia, who plays Maria, said: 'Maria and Gary are going through a bit of a rough patch at the minute and initially, she's upset that he's left but doesn't think too much into it. 'As soon as Gary misses Liam's birthday, she has a gut feeling that something isn't right and fears something awful might have happened to him. 'Maria's mind is spiralling but she doesn't stop for a second to think who actually attacked Gary. 'She's aware he has a lot of enemies from over the years who could have potentially wanted to take revenge on him.' For instance, Gary had a violent fight with Lou's villainous husband Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton) just weeks ago. It came after he discovered Mick had terrified his stepson Liam by leaving him locked in a cabinet for hours during an attempted practical joke in the builder's yard. Gary was furious, confronting Mick, who soon found himself fired. But he is not one to go down without a fight and soon warned Gary he would regret giving him the push out of the yard. He soon confronted Gary on the street, where the pair had a bloody brawl in broad daylight, which nearly ended with Mick being bottled before Kit stepped in. It comes after Gary made a shock return to the cobbles earlier this year, after a long time off our screens. The character had not been seen on the soap since January, which left fans baffled at the time - his absence was not explained and no plot point was created to justify it. Maria had also been missing from recent episodes. But they both came back at the end of April, with Gary telling Maria he wants to sell his shop and buy the builder's yard in Weatherfield to start afresh - which she is not convinced is a good plan. Fans were shocked and delighted to see Gary's return, taking to X to express their astonishment. One said, 'I'd forgotten what he looked like', while someone else commented, 'A rare Gary sighting!' Another added: 'Gary's here too?! Did they finally find the key to the cupboard they've been keeping all these characters in?' Someone else said: 'Oh wow, Gary Windass is still alive? I forgot about him.' Last month, avid fans of the soap had questioned where he was on X, with three posing the exact same question, 'Where is Gary Windass?', with another adding: 'Really need his storyline.' Someone else commented: 'Hmm Corrie mysteries... Gary and Maria have been AWOL for months. Is there a Bermuda Triangle corner in Weatherfield?' Fans were worried the lack of explanation meant the couple were going to be quietly written out of the show - but their fears will have been alleviated by their surprise return.
