Kochi Metro phase 2: KMRL floats open bid for third rail traction system
The successful bidder needs to complete the 'Design Verification, Detail Engineering, Supply, Installation, Testing and Commissioning of 750 V DC Third Rail traction electrification' in 24 months from the date of Letter of Award, as per the tender documents issued on August 6.
The Phase 2 project includes the construction of an elevated, electrified metro rail system of 11.2 km and 11 stations along the JLN Stadium-Infopark section. While the original deadline was 2025 end, it was revised to December 31, 2026, after the work suffered a delay due to fund shortage and issues related to utility shifting.
'While the complete section is targeted to be completed by next year end, we plan to open the first reach up to Padamughal by June 30, 2026. Hence the successful bidder should need to complete the work in that session quickly by March 2026. It requires another three months for purposes like testing and all,' a senior KMRL official told TNIE.
However, the metro authorities cited that the timely receipt of the Union and state government nods for the quick availing of loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is vital to realise the same.
The first reach of Pink Line includes five stations — Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala and Padamughal, besides the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The second reach, including stations Kakkanad Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukara, KINFRA, Infopark 1 and Infopark 2, is expected to be operational in another six months, by December 31, 2026.
The scope of the work also includes the setting up of Traction Substations (TSS), Auxiliary Substations (ASS) and Associated SCADA (Supervisory control and Data Acquisition) systems. The last date of submission of queries for pre-bid by the bidder is August 18, while the deadline for tender submission is September 8, and the bids will be opened the next day.
The civil infrastructure work is being carried out by Afcons Infrastructure, which was awarded the project back in June 2024.
The construction of 600 piles out of the total 1,961 have been completed, besides that of 350 piles (total 1,601). The KMRL has now hastened up the construction work.

Metro Brands stumbles in Q1. Can faster store rollout put it back on track?
Metro Brands Ltd's earnings estimates were downgraded after its June quarter (Q1FY26) results. Eid falling in March and early monsoon rains in key markets such as Gujarat and Maharashtra hurt volumes in physical channels, leading to an estimated 2-3% revenue impact. As a result, Q1 consolidated revenue grew 9% year-on-year on a low base to ₹628 crore, below estimates. In the previous two quarters, revenue growth was slightly above 10% each. The company has a lot of ground to cover to meet its desired long-term revenue CAGR target of 15-18%. 'We lower our FY26e/27e revenue by around 2.4% on average, factoring in a sub-par Q1 and continued decline in sales per square feet," Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Broking said in a report. Metro's sales per square foot fell year-on-year for the ninth straight quarter in Q1FY26, declining 3% to ₹4,350. Metro added a net 20 stores in Q1, taking the total to 928, and entered a new city. An accelerated rollout is planned in H2FY26, especially for brands such as Fila, Clarks, and Foot Locker, while maintaining a disciplined, profitability-led approach. BIS-related supply chain disruptions prompted a cautious stance on Foot Locker expansion, but this is expected to normalize by the end of FY26. The company aims to open three Foot Locker outlets ahead of the festive season in Q3FY26, scale up New Era from Q2FY26, and launch Fila exclusive stores in H2FY26. Fila is expected to break even in FY27. Metro is also stepping up Walkway store additions—four were opened in Q1FY26—targeting the mass-market segment. Its portfolio also includes Metro, Mochi, and Crocs. Higher marketing spends, which management intends to keep at 3.5-4% of sales in FY26, dented profitability, with Ebitda margin down 45 basis points year-on-year to 31%. Still, long-term guidance of an operating margin above 30% has been retained, supported by cost-control measures. Premiumization remains a tailwind, with products priced above ₹3,000 contributing 56% of Q1FY26 sales. Despite these efforts, prolonged demand weakness and slower store additions have weighed on the stock, which is down 12% over the past year. However, rivals Bata India Ltd and Relaxo Footwears Ltd have seen a sharper drop. 'Against a weak backdrop, Q1 revenue/profit after tax growth of 7-9% appears decent (versus peers)," said Emkay Global Financial Services. Even so, valuations remain steep. Metro trades at 58x estimated FY27 earnings, Bloomberg data show.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said that the approval of Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project will prove to be a milestone in the development journey of the state. Adityanath's statement came after the Union Cabinet on Tuesday gave its nod to Phase-IB of the Lucknow Metro project with a corridor length of 11.165 km at a cost of Rs 5,801 crore. In a post on X in Hindi, Adityanath said, 'It is the result of the successful guidance of the respected Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and your constant support that Uttar Pradesh is today moving on an unprecedented development journey. 'I thank the Prime Minister for this progressive and people-friendly decision. I also thank the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath ji and Minister of Urban and Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) Shri Manohar Lal for the proposed metro extension in Lucknow," he added. The new corridor will introduce approximately 11.165 km of new Metro lines with 12 stations — seven underground and five elevated — improving public transportation in the oldest and the most densely populated areas of the city, which currently lack efficient connectivity, the statement said. This phase aims to seamlessly integrate the key zones of Old Lucknow, including commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj and Chowk, it said. It will also integrate the other key zones such as the King George's Medical University (Medical College) and major tourist attractions such as Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza, besides the culinary destinations in a city known for its rich and historic food culture, the statement said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
