SME Sabah, IEM emphasise cross-sector partnerships

Kota Kinabalu: The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Sabah (SME Sabah) and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch reinforced their collaboration on Wednesday with a shared focus on enhancing innovation and technical expertise across Sabah's business and engineering sectors. This was expressed during SME Sabah's courtesy visit to IEM Sabah Branch at its office in Damai Point, a meeting that emphasised the important role of cross-sector partnerships in driving sustainable development. Attendees included senior leaders from SME Sabah led by its President Dr Deledda Tan, IEM Sabah led by Vice Chairman I Tan Kok Jyh and ACEM Sabah led by Chairman Benny Song Perng Yeu, signalling a united push toward innovation-driven progress. A key outcome was IEM Sabah's official endorsement of SME Sabah's upcoming SME Conference, along with the approval of 6.5 Continuing Professional Development points for engineers in attendance, a testament to the event's value in professional upskilling. The session concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing optimism for long-term engagement to boost the development of local industries through strategic collaboration between SMEs and the engineering sector. Youth development remains key focus in Sabah: CM

He said the development of young people has been made a key pillar of the state's Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya, recognising them not only as beneficiaries but also as agents of change. Speaking at the Anak Muda Programme at Dewan Sri Putatan today, Hajiji highlighted that from 2021 to 2025, 14 new initiatives worth RM164.14 million had been introduced, benefiting more than 210,000 students. He said the State Government had provided youth grants, skills training, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship programmes, and today presented a RM300,000 grant to youth NGOs in Putatan to further support their ideas and projects. State allocates RM600,000 for e-hailing workers' EPF accounts

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said 11,109 applications had been received from gig workers keen to contribute to the EPF. He made the announcement while officiating Sabah Moto Day 8.0 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, which this year drew around 60,000 riders and motor enthusiasts from Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. Hajiji described the gathering as a reflection of shared passion across communities and noted its contribution to the state economy through tourism and related spending. Sandakan showcases sustainable urban agenda at Asean Sustainable Urbanisation Forum

Kuala Lumpur: Sandakan was the sole representative from Sabah to present at the recent Asean Sustainable Urbanisation Forum (ASUF), held in conjunction with the Asean Governors and Mayors Forum (AGMF) and the 2025 Meeting of Governors and Mayors of Asean Capitals (MGMAC), from Aug 10 to 15 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). Mohd Kazroy Nizam Sani, Head of the Urban Planning & Architecture Department at the Sandakan Municipal Council, delivered an engaging presentation titled 'Localising Global Goals Through Sandakan Sustainable Community Agenda 2023–2027' on the SDG Stage during the multi-day event. He highlighted how the Council overcame initial resistance to rejuvenate an alleyway, now transformed into 'Creative Lane Sandakan', a vibrant tourist attraction and part of the Heritage Walk Trail, featuring artistic murals on building walls. Mohd Kazroy also showcased community tourism initiatives involving local villages, citing Kampung Bambangan as a model of success, and commended Council President Walter Joseph Kinson for prioritising trading slots for youth entrepreneurs. He acknowledged vandalism issues at certain sites such as Taman Memorial Tun Abdul Razak, but noted that public cooperation has helped keep the situation under control.
