GRS's 52-seat bid risks straining ties with national party allies, says analyst

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: An analyst has cautioned that the call for Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to contest 52 out of 73 seats in the upcoming state election risks stirring discontent among its potential allies from national parties. Syahruddin Awang Ahmad of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) said parties like Umno, which had a strong historical presence in Sabah, would see this as an attempt by GRS to 'take over' their seats. He added that GRS's proposal would have significant political implications on cooperation with Sabah's ruling coalition ahead of the state polls. 'An unfair seat distribution, or one that doesn't reflect the actual strength of each party, will have consequences,' he said. Lee Kuok Tiung, also of UMS, said three-cornered or multi-party contests would be unavoidable, even if GRS cooperates with national parties ahead of the state election. 'Overlapping areas are difficult to avoid,' he said.
Advertisement Last Sunday, GRS vice-president Masiung Banah said GRS was expected to field candidates in at least 52 out of the 73 state constituencies at the next state polls. He said the remaining 21 seats would be allocated to national parties that agreed to cooperate with GRS. GRS and Pakatan Harapan (PH) are currently allies in the Sabah state administration while the Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) sits in the opposition. PH and BN have announced an alliance for the state polls, while talks are ongoing to include GRS in the pact. On Sunday, PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar expressed hope that her party would be able to contest a minimum of 13 seats in the Sabah election. The following day, Sabah DAP deputy chief Chan Foong Hin said the state chapter was eyeing at least 10 seats in the state polls. I won't reject offer to join govt if there's ‘clear purpose', says KJ

PETALING JAYA : Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin says he is open to rejoining the government, but only if the role allows him to serve with clear purpose and impact. Appearing on the 'Apa Cerita?' podcast, Khairy said he was currently enjoying his post-political career, but the idea of serving the country remains close to his heart. 'I am actually having fun now. Last week I was a DJ, then boxing, the commercial value is also high,' he said. 'If I can help and add value, I will consider it. Because one of the things I was told by my mom was that public service is above all else. National service above all else.' When asked whether he would accept a position if offered by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Khairy said he would be open to that conversation, but only if it was about making a real impact. 'If it's just to give me a position for the sake of giving a position, then no need. I have always said yes to the call of duty,' he said. Khairy, a former Umno Youth chief and three-term Rembau MP, was sacked from Umno in January 2023 for alleged breaches of party discipline. He previously served as youth and sports minister under Najib Razak, science, technology and innovation minister under Muhyiddin Yassin, and later as health minister under Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Since leaving politics, Khairy has pivoted to media and business. He co-hosts the 'Keluar Sekejap' podcast with Shahril Hamdan, is a presenter on Hot FM, and has taken on several speaking and business engagements.

PKR leader dismisses Puad's Selangor claim as ‘coffee shop talk'

PETALING JAYA : A PKR leader has dismissed as mere 'coffee shop talk' a remark by Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi that it is not impossible for Umno to become dominant in Selangor. PKR Youth deputy chief Izuan Kasim told FMT that by the same logic, PKR could also become the dominant party in Johor and Melaka. 'Statements like this really don't need to be made publicly. It's fine for casual chats with friends at a coffee shop, but there's no need to make such remarks officially. 'Especially since he's not a low-ranking leader – he holds a top position. Sometimes what he says doesn't reflect the direction taken by his party president,' said Izuan, who is also the Kota Damansara assemblyman. Yesterday, Puad took a jab at Khir Toyo's move to join Bersatu, blaming the former Selangor menteri besar for Umno's loss of power in the state – a loss that persists to this day. When explaining his decision to join Bersatu, Khir claimed that Umno had lost all ambition to lead the government, whether at the federal level or in Selangor. He said Umno had become merely a supplementary party, lacking the ambition to return to power. Khir, a former Umno Supreme Council member, also believes that the party would not be allocated enough parliamentary seats in the next general election. In response, Puad argued that politics today required wisdom and trust, and that Umno's return to dominance was not far-fetched. He said that if Umno could lead in Perak and Pahang with fewer seats, it is certainly possible in Selangor, too. Izuan, however, warned that such statements could make it more difficult for Umno heading into the next general election, especially since such decisions were made by the top leadership. He added that, unlike Umno, PKR was more flexible and capable of making collective decisions, drawing from its involvement in coalitions like Pakatan Rakyat, Pakatan Harapan and now the unity government. 'We (PKR) are sincere in how we operate. But really, his (Puad's) remarks were unnecessary. There's no need to paint such a picture – he should just go enjoy his breakfast quietly,' Izuan quipped. Meanwhile, PKR central leadership council member G Gunarajah said Puad's comments should be made more carefully, especially in the current context where Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim leads a unity government. He said the unity government – which has restored political stability and investor confidence – was not built on party dominance, but on shared responsibility. 'The same applies in Selangor. Under (menteri besar) Amirudin Shari, the state administration has shown consistent and progressive achievements, and enjoys strong support across communities. 'If you want to show strength, do it by serving the people, not by trying to dominate your partners. Dominance doesn't need to be declared – let the people judge us by our performance and sincerity.'
