Ghislaine Maxwell's life could be in danger in Florida prison after she met with Justice Department to reveal new Jeffrey Epstein details, top investigative reporter warns
Julie K. Brown, the Miami Herald journalist whose 2018 reporting helped bring Epstein and Maxwell back into the spotlight, said the 63-year-old British socialite is not safe inside the Federal Correctional Institute in Tallahassee, Florida.
In a podcast, she said: 'It is so easy to cover up a crime in jail. The cameras are broken, guards fall asleep - they are, for the most part, very corrupt.'
Brown added that Maxwell's recent decision to cooperate with federal investigators had put a target on her back and claimed that she 'wouldn't necessarily be safe anywhere.'
Concerns over her safety have loomed long before she agreed to speak with the DOJ, which now includes former Trump lawyer Todd Blanche as Deputy Attorney General.
Her lawyer, David Markus, previously described the intense surveillance his client faced in custody following her 2020 arrest.
The scrutiny was widely believed to be an attempt to avoid a repeat of Epstein's death in August 2019, when he was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Manhattan.
The Justice Department insisted this month that Epstein died by suicide, but questions still linger.
The surveillance footage, which officials said would provide 'full raw' coverage, was missing three crucial minutes.
The DOJ also acknowledged multiple protocol failures, including Epstein being left unattended and guards neglecting their rounds.
Speaking on the Daily Beast podcast, Brown told host Joanna Coles: 'Look at Epstein. He was probably one of the most high-profile prisoners that we've ever had, and he still was managed to be found dead. Anything's possible.'
A November 2023 report by the Justice Department's Inspector General raised fresh concerns about conditions inside the Tallahassee prison, where Maxwell is serving her 20-year sentence.
The review found 'weaknesses with inmate search procedures and limited security camera coverage.'
Two inmates died at the facility last year - one at the federal prison, and another at the adjacent detention centre, with no cause of death released.
Maxwell has also reportedly been threatened behind bars. A Daily Mail report says that two inmates discovered she had received extra food from a kitchen worker to help her maintain a vegan diet.
They allegedly threatened her unless she gave them her entire $360 monthly commissary allowance.
Maxwell allegedly reported the pair, and they were placed in solitary confinement for nearly 50 days. Upon their release, Maxwell is said to have become so paranoid about retaliation that she stopped using the showers.
Brown also said in the podcast that Maxwell could also face pressure to clear Donald Trump's name if she wants to secure a reduced sentence or early release.
She said: 'My guess is they're going to try to find something, because this story isn't going away for Trump.
'So my guess is they're going to try to figure out some way to have her make a public statement of some sort that Trump wasn't involved.'
Maxwell is currently appealing her 2021 conviction for grooming minors for Epstein's abuse.
In a petition filed with the Supreme Court on Monday, her legal team argued that she should have been shielded from prosecution under Epstein's controversial 2007 plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Florida.
The deal stipulated that several unnamed co-conspirators would not be prosecuted.
Trump, for his part, told reporters Monday that he has not ruled out granting Maxwell a pardon, saying: Right now, it would be inappropriate to talk about it.'

Skip Bayless torched for thanking god that Manhattan shooter didn't kill NFL employees: ‘All time stone cold moron'
Polarizing sports pundit Skip Bayless waded into controversy once again this week when he reacted to the horrific mass shooting at a Manhattan skyscraper that left four people dead by expressing relief that the gunman didn't shoot NFL employees in the building. The former ESPN star's hot take on the tragedy predictably sparked backlash and mockery, with critics noting that the outspoken commentator was essentially saying 'thank god other people got killed instead' while wondering 'what the f*ck is wrong' with Bayless. Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, entered a Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday evening and began 'spraying' ammunition with his M4 assault rifle. Tamura then took an elevator up to Rudin Management's 33rd-floor office, where he continued shooting before eventually turning the gun on himself. Tamura's victims included Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, NYPD police officer Didarul Islam, security officer Aland Etienne and Rudin Management associate Julia Hyman. In a note left at the shooting, Tamura – who was a star high school running back – blamed football and his alleged chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) for his actions. The NFL has offices on the lower levels of the skyscraper and local authorities have said they believe that Tamura 'appeared to have gone to the wrong floor' during his rampage and intended to target the league's staff. The NFL has said that one of its employees was seriously injured in the attack. Following the revelations that Tamura was targeting the pro football league and wanted his brain studied for CTE, Bayless took to social media to weigh in on the developing situation. 'Thank God the New York City shooter apparently took the wrong bank of elevators and didn't make it to the NFL floors,' Bayless tweeted on Tuesday. 'He reportedly bizarrely blamed the NFL for what he believed to be his CTE suffered from playing high-school football.' Needless to say, the callous nature of Bayless' tweet – which completely sidestepped the victims of the shooting while breathing a sigh of relief that the NFL was unharmed – led to intense criticism, condemnation and ridicule. 'Truly the all time best rage baiter in history. Even puts goliaths of always being wrong like [Jason] Whitlock to shame,' professional poker player Scott Siever reacted. 'Just an all time stone cold moron or a sociopath with no empathy and thus a brilliant calculating mind for creating misery and anger. Not sure which one is worse.' New York attorney Mark Bederow, meanwhile, mocked Bayless for thanking god 'for the fact that he went to a different floor and killed an innocent woman rather than innocent NFL employees,' all while wondering 'how is this idiot on tv!' Mike Isaac, a tech reporter for The New York Times, responded to Bayless' observation by saying that 'every so often' he encounters a 'tweet in the wild that is so bad' that it makes him 'audibly gasp at my phone.' Meanwhile, others referenced Bayless' contrarian television persona and his habit of tossing out regrettable or downright bizarre tweets. 'NOW STEPHEN A, YOU KNOW I DON'T LIKE SHOOTINGS mmmhmm BUT,' one X user quipped, impersonating a hypothetical exchange between Bayless and his former First Take co-host Stephen A. Smith. This is hardly the first time that Bayless has gotten himself in hot water over a rage-baiting social media post. The then-Fox Sports pundit came under fire in January 2023 when he questioned why the NFL was postponing a football game after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on the field. Bayless' comments drew rebuke not just from social media critics but also from his Undisputed co-host Shannon Sharpe, who no-showed the following broadcast to avoid a possible confrontation with his colleague. The pair would eventually get into an angry on-air clash later in the week after Bayless defended his refusal to take down the controversial tweet. In the end, Sharpe would end up leaving Undisputed months later over what he later described as a personal attack Bayless made against him, which showed Bayless' level of 'disrespect.' Sharpe went on to join Bayless' old home of ESPN, but was placed on a leave of absence after he was hit with a $50 million civil lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault. The lawsuit was resolved earlier this month. Bayless, who left Fox Sports in August 2024 after eight years with the network, has also found himself embroiled in scandal in recent months. In a lawsuit filed earlier this year, a former Fox Sports hairstylist accused Bayless of making repeated sexual advances and inappropriately touching her after she began working on Undisputed, claiming he allegedly offered her $1.5 million to have sex with him.

Trump rips into 'real loser' Fox News host after NYC shooting comments
President Donald Trump insulted Fox News host Jessica Tarlov on Wednesday after she reacted to the Midtown Manhattan shooting and called for more gun control. Trump weighed in on Tarlav's comments on the Fox News show 'The Five' as he returned home from Scotland aboard Air Force One. 'I can't stand Jessica Tarlov of THE FIVE. A real loser!!! DJT,' wrote Trump at 5:13 pm on social media. Tarlov is a former political strategist for the Democratic party and appears on the network as the 'token liberal' to share her left-of-center opinions about politics and current events. The president commented on Tarlov after endorsed Gov. Kathy Hochul 's reflection on gun control, calling for an assault weapons ban. 'We did have an assault weapons ban from 1994 to 2004, we saw a decrease in mass shootings in this country, 70 percent less likely to happen. And then when the ban sunsetted, it spiked back up,' Tarlov said, referring to Hochul's remarks. Tarlov also suggested that someone with a 'documented mental health history' should have not had a concealed carry license for a gun. 'How are these things happening? And I don't think that it hurts the conversation or takes us backward at all to consider how we might prevent one of these things from happening,' she said. Tarlov also defended CNN's Erin Burnett who was criticized for describing the now-deceased shooter, Shane Tamura, as 'possibly white' in the initial reporting from the shooting, even as the photo showed a man with dark hair and complexion. 'I saw all over social media that the perpetrator was of Middle Eastern descent, and people were jumping to that before we found out that actually it wasn't the case at all. He's an American, half black, half Japanese,' Tarlov said. 'Yeah, that's social media though. CNN should know better,' co-host Greg Gutfeld replied. Tamura drove across the country with an M4 semiautomatic rifle and entered the Midtown Manhattan office building and opened fire in the lobby before taking the elevator to the 33rd floor, according to officials. He killed four people including a NYPD police officer and injured one other person before turning his rifle on himself and committing suicide. It's not the first time the president has criticized Tarlov, as he appears to be an avid watcher of 'The Five' Fox News program. In June, the president complained about Tarlov after she brought up the president's negative poll numbers on the show. 'Why does Fox News allow failed TV personality Jessica Tarlov to 'soil' The Five?' Trump wrote on social media. 'Her voice, her manner, and above all else, what she says, are a disgrace to television broadcasting.' Trump added that 'people like Jessica Tarlov make MAGA absolutely hate Fox!' 'Nobody can stand Tarlov!' he continued. 'She lies over and over again, and MAGA is complaining, BIG LEAGUE, that she's all over Fox. Watch their ratings go down by keeping her on the show — nobody wants to listen to her.'

Murder rocks peaceful Maryland suburb after wife, 50, realized 'big hearted' husband, 53, 'was having AFFAIR'
A woman fatally gunned down her husband inside their Maryland home after allegedly finding text messages that indicated he was having an affair. Nicole Lanett Ward, 50, is charged with the murder of her husband Damian Ward, 53, after the couple got into an argument inside their Bowie home on July 19. Charging documents seen by Fox5 said that Ward told officers, who arrived on the scene, that she found a second phone belonging to her husband. On the device, she 'found photos and messages indicating that the decedent was having an extramarital affair with another woman,' according to the documents. She told officers that after finding the phone, she told her husband to 'pack his bags and leave the house'. The document added that the two continued to argue, before police say she pulled out a .357 Magnum revolver and shot him in the head. Neighbors who spoke with the outlet described Damian as a 'big, friendly guy, with an even bigger heart', while adding that the couple seemed happily married. According to the Maryland Judiciary, Ward is facing charges of first and second degree murder, assault in the first and second degree, reckless endangerment and the use of a firearm in a felony. Damian's father Greg shared a tribute to his son on social media, seemingly alluding to the alleged affair. He wrote: 'It has been a tremendous week navigating through this loss. My heart is truly broken, as he was a wonderful son (not without his faults). 'Still a great man. I will miss the family cookouts, the laughter, the fellowship, and our cigar and bourbon time. He will never be forgotten and will always be in my heart.' According to a fundraiser also organized by his father, Damian has a young daughter. Images on his social media show him and Nicole with the child. Friend Gilberto Frederick also posted a touching tribute to Damian, describing him as a 'gentle giant'. He said: 'Damian always had my back, no matter what. He was like that with everyone he loved. 'He was a gentle giant, for the most part. He was a big guy, but he had an even bigger heart. I will miss him tremendously. Rest in Peace, Damian. I love you, man.' In a statement Prince George's County Police Department said: 'The Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit charged a suspect with fatally shooting her husband inside of their home on Saturday. 'The victim is 53-year-old Damian Ward of Bowie. The suspect is 50-year-old Nicole Lanett Ward.' It added: 'On July 19, 2025, at approximately 1:45 am, officers were dispatched to the couple's home in the 13200 block of Old Chapel Road in the unincorporated section of Bowie. 'Officers located the victim inside suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the scene. 'The preliminary investigation revealed the suspect shot the victim during an argument. 'Nicole Ward is charged with first and second degree murder and related charges. She's in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.' Court records indicate that Ward is next expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing next month.
